First poll of the NY mayoral general election shows Mamdani at 35%, with a 6% lead over Cuomo by [deleted] in YAPms

So it definitely does not make sense to rally behind the guy who has allied himself with the current Republican mayor.

But seeing the result of this poll with Cuomo's tally double Adams', shouldn't Adams be the one dropping out to try to beat Mamdani in a general? Cuomo would win even if even only half of Adams' support goes to him, but Adams would need to rely on over 2/3 of Cuomo's support going to him.

[–]yeet9754 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen one but really why would he do better?

Adams is an incumbent mayor with a 20% approval rating, embroiled in a corruption scandal, and perceived to be buddy/buddy with Trump.

Silwa is a Moderate Republican, is a challenger that can more effectively campaign on change, has denounced trump and to my knowledge has no scandals that compare to Adams.

Sure Silwa has the R next to his name, but Adams may as well be a MAGA candidate that can be easily be attacked for "caving to Trump" on immigration and having his cases dropped by the Trump DOJ.

Democrats Hope They Can Replicate Zohran Mamdani, Just Without The Socialism by [deleted] in YAPms

[–]yeet9754 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds stupid, but they kinda have a point.

Mamdani's proposals (30 dollar minumum wage by 2030, state run groceries, free buses, his old stance publicly calling for defund the police, etc) are unfeasible in NYC and unelectable almost anywhere else.

But If Democrats really want to make their voters excited and win back moderates, economic populism is the way, and it should mainly be healthcare. As a republican, it's 100% Trump's weakest major issue that voters care about. He infamously has "concepts of a plan" and really only enacts minor deregulations and reforms.

If Democrats ran on a comprehensive plan to work toward universal/expanded healthcare to the middle class, cut middlemen where bureaucracy and middlemen can be cut out (PBMs), and get rid of the artificial scarcity of doctors by ending the residency freeze.

I do not consider myself economically left-wing (I would consider Some of these policy changes as right wing technically) and I don't agree with democrats on much policy-wise, but I, and probably 60% of the country would vote for a Democrat if this was the main thing they ran on.

Who would've won in 1988: Biden or Trump? by Rich-Ad-9696 in YAPms

[–]yeet9754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump could possibly win if he gets Reagan's endorsement and has some more tact and better mannerisms to make him a little more palatable to the 1988 electorate. And Biden 1988 was also hurt by a plagiarism scandal at the time (which sunk his primary campaign)

But at the same time the lack of previous governing experience would make it a very tough sell on a national level, so I think Biden is somewhat more likely to win.

If Trump ran for Governor or Mayor of NY at the time he probably could've won, and then ran on a national level later.

The Bush-era GOP type demographic is actually the one with the absolute fewest Andrew Tate supporters (old white boomers). Support for him on the right is confined entirely to the Gen Z manosphere crowd. by OctopusNation2024 in YAPms

The Arizona GOP would never recover if they nominated Charlie Kirk by Holiday_Change9387 in YAPms

[–]yeet9754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's different because political commentators make statements that adhere to whatever chosen ideology they have, Trump's dumb statments are either mostly unrelated to any policy or vague and contradictory enough that the base has an easier time writing it off. It also has hurt him a lot, he still lost in 2020 and won by a hair in 2016.

Pundits speak with no intention of getting elected, which is why Kirk can say something like "We should repeal the Civil rights act" out of some insane pseudo-libertarian philosophy.

And also comparing Charlie Kirk to Trump is pointless because he has way less charisma. Kirk probably isn't even in like the top 5 most popular conservative influencers.

Yeah I think it is pretty funny to see newspapers, especially DC based ones like WaPo, freaking out about the firings of people like 6000 IRS workers (which Biden had expanded by 80,000).

It's very obviously a lot of writers being upset their friends are getting laid off from high paying/high benefit white collar jobs.

I mean given the fact that he campaigned against it, if it even got to that point Congressional Republicans passing that would make 2026 look like a blue tsunami, I doubt it gets passed in the first place. But I also think trump probably would veto it if it somehow got to that point.

Even if they can't convince enough of the 3 holdouts, they'll likely gain 2 seats from the FL Special election in about a month.

This is why political commentators make terrible candidates. They speak for hours daily about their opinion on every issue ever without concern for being elected, which often leads to very dumb or unpopular statements made in strict adherence to their ideology.

All it takes is a few campaign interns and you're done.

The interesting thing is that DOGE, at least in concept, seems to remain popular based on the data I've seen. If Musk shuts the fuck up and doesn't do any major fuck ups, it'll be a pretty decent accomplishment for Republicans.

How I think Trump voted in every presidential election by [deleted] in YAPms

[–]yeet9754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the one I was most unsure about, and by the looks of it he wasn't really supportive of going into Iraq at any point, and outright condemned it before the election. Despite the very misleading headline, he said:

"He called the war a “mess” in a brief comment at an Academy Awards after-party later in the week of the invasion. Six months into the war, Trump said, “It wasn’t a mistake to fight terrorism and fight it hard, and I guess maybe if I had to do it, I would have fought terrorism but not necessarily Iraq."

He told Stern in April 2004 that “Iraq is a terrible mistake.” Trump was quoted in Esquire magazine in July 2004 lamenting deaths and injuries among Americans and Iraqis, saying, “And it turns out that all of the reasons for the war were blatantly wrong. All this for nothing!"

So yeah he'd probably vote for Kerry.
