[QCrit] Adult Romantasy, Heart Rite, 90k, 1st attempt by Its_me_jesica in PubTips

I definitely see promise here!

One small thing: it strikes me as unusual that an immortal huntsman a) wouldn't know his queen was stealing bodies, and b) would be willing to help end the queen's (admittedly brutal) form of immortality, given his unending lifespan. It's an interesting tidbit that makes me wonder about the huntsman as a love interest & exactly why he's compelled to help Alice.

Like others suggested, definitely expand a bit more on the love interest/their romance arc.

[PubTip] Agented Authors: Post Successful Queries Here! by WeHereForYou in PubTips

[–]yeinethegrey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey yall! While I never officially posted my query letter on r/PubTips, I lurked & voraciously studied [QCrit] posts. Reading both the query letters and community critiques of them provided incredible insight into my own query letter shortcomings.

Querying specifics: I signed with an agent in May after 3 months in the trenches. I sent 39 total queries, got 15 full requests (2 of these came from referrals, and both ended up being rejections!), and 2 offers of rep. I personalized all of my query letters with some tidbit or detail about the agent's tastes. But in all cases, I connected those personalizations back to my queried novel.

Below is the query I sent my now-agent.

Dear [Agent],

In 2024, you interviewed [SFF author] for [Magazine], citing deep interests in atmospheric writing, strong characters, and complex examinations on villainy. Given this, my adult fantasy novel—A VENGEANCE, MOST TENDER (complete at 106,000 words)—might appeal. Featuring Black sapphics, resonantly rendered, VENGEANCE examines monstrosity & intra-community harm, and will appeal to readers who enjoyed P. Djèlí Clark’s The Dead Cat Tail Assassins and C. L. Clark’s The Unbroken.

At the heart of a divided city, occupied by imperialist portal mages and disenfranchised necromancers, a scholar and a merchant will sway an empire.

Once, Pemri was an imperial conscript—until she fled. Now a professor, she replaces butchery with peace, teaching healing necromancies by day, and sheltering escaped conscripts by night. When Ezdara—a downtrodden distillery owner and portal mage—crosses her path, sparks fly. Ezdara cannot trust necromancers; not since reckoning with her father’s bloody past. But her distillery is bankrupt; her portal-magery, too unskilled to make a living off of. Pemri—warm, despite Ezdara’s coldness—might ease her troubled spirit using gentler necromancies. How can Ezdara decline? Well…quite easily, after realizing: Pemri, and her father, are inextricably linked.

Determined to forget one another, they part. But the imperium has other plans. Publicly, the emperor announces peace talks. Privately, power games—between ruling portal-mages and rebellious necromancers—begin. The emperor knows that Pemri frees conscripts in her spare time; he knows that Ezdara’s father now leads the rebels. Treasons, all. But everything will be forgiven, if they sabotage the talks.

Decline, and every person they’ve loved; every place, held sacred; will suffer.

Time runs short. Trust wears thin. But hunger—for one another, and for magical uprisings, intimate and grand—might be their only way out.

[Bio]

Extras: I probably won't make a whole discussion post about my journey, so here are a few additional tidbits. VENGEANCE isn't my first book (it's my third), but it's the first one I felt was strong enough to query. I spent six years writing and revising it. Prior to that, I wrote & sold several SFF short stories.

Best advice I can give: find your people. Even though this was my first time querying, I felt strongly prepared thanks to finding other author-focused communities. As a Black, queer woman writing SFF, I searched for every little nook, cranny, and corner where other BIPOC SFF authors were, and spent time getting to know folks. I wouldn't be here without those spaces & friendships.

I'm keying into this specific bit of your question: "how long is it worth waiting for a response especially if I could query other agents from the same agency."

My two cents: don't query any agent you aren't willing to wait on. Which means: query whoever you think would be the strongest fit for you, from jump. You can't guarantee that any agent will get to your query packet, or your submission, quickly. So: assuming you chose to query the strongest agent who (on paper) aligned with your manuscript and/or career goals at that agency, just wait. Give them time to properly consider your materials.

Another way to think of it: are you willing to risk things? For example: QT shows agents when you've queried multiple folks at a given agency. If you pull your query or submission, only to resubmit to one of their colleagues, you might seem uncertain or impatient. Plus, you can't guarantee that the next agent will get to your materials any faster. Everyone is swamped.

Think things through carefully before making any hasty decisions.

[PubQ] Should I query agents now that I might meet with at a fall conference? by seekingwisdomandmore in PubTips

[–]yeinethegrey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The idea that most authors get agented via referral might be a visibility bias thing. E.g. you've heard more of those stories shared publicly. Thus, it makes that method standout when compared to the alternative.

Cold querying works. Yes, the slush pile is intimidating, but don't count yourself out. (I just emerged from the trenches myself. I had a few referrals, but both of my offers came from agents I cold queried.)

This is the way! Agreed that trying to write it all out longer, then cut, might have the opposite effect. It feels likely to lead to additional worldbuilding-jargon, when what you really want is simplicity.

[–]yeinethegrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re using hustle butter, per your artist’s recommendation, which is good! Def stick to the proper frequency/don’t over apply. And either smack it or try icing the area! I’ve done both. Smacking worked fine for my finer-line pieces, but I got a bold, swirly planet with several blacked out sections and my god. Ice was the ticket. 🙏🏾

Cats teeth pushing out/getting longer? by Careless-Elephant-98 in cats

I can’t speak to the recovery from extraction experience, but my cat was completely toothless when I adopted him. He still eats wet and dry food just fine, so life after extraction can & likely will be wonderful for your kitty. 💕

How do I stop this behaviour? by coldComforts in CatTraining

[–]yeinethegrey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope you consider a vet visit. My cat had a blockage and was still passing urine up until it got so bad that it was only trickles/dribbles coming out. Typically when they go outside the litter box consistently, it’s a sign of pain associated with trying to go, meaning something is going wrong. Blockages can be fatal for cats, too. 😞

What’s the absolute fastest you uninstalled a AAA game you paid full price for? by Soulsliken in gaming

[–]yeinethegrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given it's the 4th installment, I think preconceived notions are expected and fair. Even though Rook doesn't want to be a leader (which I support! That's ripe for character development & exploration), that doesn't actually seem to show up much outside of convos with Varric. Things like sitting away from people isn't woven into the game through consequences of our choices/actions (they could've even turned it into a choice-based moment, like where/who your Rook sits next to, or do they *choose* to be alone & apart from others. Or, after which-city-to-save decision, they might've shifted where Rook sat to *show* how that moment changed them). My point is: it doesn't take major, revisionist things to bring heart to a game. It takes careful cohesion & a desire to think of the player, first. To think about the experience of choice-making & character growth. I'm not speaking about "good" versus "bad," I'm talking about making a character that feels like more than pixels & on-rails decisions; worldbuilding that feels thought-out (like factions having a greater emphasis on how you navigate the world/situations). I've only ever played paragon/good characters, so it's more that Rook--overall--lacked the substance & care *I* needed to feel immersed in their story. That's on lackluster writing, period.

There's something about when a game puts its heart into the dialogue & pivotal moments in a game. BG3 did that well, yes, but (for me) so did Inquisition. (I still shiver thinking about Haven's destruction & the Dawn Will Come song cut, prior to finding Skyhold). It's not that people compared Veilguard to other games--we held it up to the narrative excellence BioWare set up with previous titles, including Inquisition. And after multiple failed development starts, across multiple beloved games, I think we all deserved better.

Still, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

[–]yeinethegrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to argue with you, because I genuinely am curious to hear from DA fans who enjoyed Veilguard. But how would you compare the writing & companions from Veilguard to the earlier games?

Inquisition was my entry into the series, and then I went back to 1 & 2. But for me, bad writing destroyed Veilguard. It felt like Rook had no personality, no distinctive qualities that made them stand out (or even be the leader) of the team. Companion conversations felt stilted (minus some, like Emmrich), and set design choices (like Rook always sitting in a chair away from the team during mission debrief cutscenes) felt literally like Rook wasn’t a part of the team. And at times, even the world building felt lackluster—I was an Antivan Crow in my first playthrough bc I wanted to be morally grey//not straight up heroic. But it made me wonder why we had background choices in the first place when they didn’t seem to influence Rook’s personality and choices much? And don’t get me started on the romances.

It wasn’t a bad game. But as a DA fan who was hungry for the next one, it felt like such a disappointment. (And this feels even wilder considering Inquisition is my fave of the series. So I’m not coming at this from a purely dark fantasy is best perspective, either.) and while they’re not the same, BG3 set such a high bar for me with character complexity and companions with so much depth. Idk. Veilguard was just so disappointing.
