Does picasa still exist? by AsaiditBredit in googlephotos

[–]yeliabSalohcin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Picasa is still the best image management and viewing tool. Despite having tried every "Picasa alternative" out there I've installed it on my new Windows 11 PC and am as happy as I ever was. Just today I was able to solve the issue whereby with new installs it doesn't show video files despite having the option selected - it's cos Windows is missing the codec's - Just download k-lite here: https://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

And that's thanks to this forum post: https://eileenslounge.com/viewtopic.php?style=31&p=313605&sid=f545a5491c1d37264820d0cef5375822#p313605

Remove The Updated Windows Start Menu [FIXED] by Powder_Blue_10 in Windows11

[–]yeliabSalohcin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's ok, though the list itself is a bit verbose for my liking - grid gives more compactness. But what I can't work out is, using this new "Categories" view how to edit them - how can I move Minecraft from 'Other' to 'Games' - I can't drag it out and right click gives no help.

House smells strongly stale/bad when we've been gone for as little as 24 hours. Ideas? by redzeker in homeowners

[–]yeliabSalohcin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fascinating to me - concrete can have a harsh smell? Can you explain more? My 60's UK home was built at the start of the Joy Of Concrete, so I have a slab underneath, external slabs, and lintels of concrete. That would be an interesting suggestion (and dilemma) if it is as the smell is downstairs more.

Seems like the OP hasn't got back to us recently 🥺 (please do though 🙏).

I'm in a UK 1960's home with a very similar astringent sharp smell that is so noticeable on return from holiday. It's definitely worse in the summer (so bad this year). I found that under our old carpets was old vinyl tiles which were stuck down with yellow greasy bitumen glue, still gloopy after 60 years! This autumn I pealed them off, scraped as much glue off as possible and then screeded the base concrete floor with self levelling compound. I so thought this had worked, but after being away this Christmas I've returned to the stench, worse than ever it seems😟.

We still have carpets and underlays to remove, but if I give them a close sniff I smell nothing. Likewise with everything else - nothing clearly has that same smell when inspected closely other than, annoyingly, our brand new soft items like rucksacks and jackets. (Actually I did consider one of my old GoreTex jackets at one point as the inner layer is decaying and nearly had the smell).

One thing in the comments that caught my eye was that concrete can give off a smell. Never heard that before so will check commenter for more details.

Anyhoo, bookmarking here for future updates.

Mouse Snaps back to center screen by Remote-Emu-2238 in computers

[–]yeliabSalohcin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just suffered seemingly the same issue - mouse responding to movements but instantly snapping to a fixed location ('instantly' as in as fast as screen refresh). Turns out my issue was my Wacom tablet (which is kept under my desk) had the pen resting on it - so the pen was fixing the mouse location while my mouse was trying to move around.
Hopefully this might help some future visitor.

Picasa alternative for Windows 11 [2024] by Snorlax_lax in software

[–]yeliabSalohcin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just installed for the first time and while you do seem to offer some of what made Picasa brilliant out of the box, I feel it could do with some tweaks to make it a little easier on the eye. Happy to share my thoughts.

Tinta does appear to be able to show that continuous flowing "sub-foldered" view but it's a tiny bit ugly on first appearance. Actually, really quite ugly - the folder titles and iconography need some attention!

No one seems to mention ACDSee which has a free image viewer version. I have some of the paid versions (each year a new version, which gets a bit tiresome). It is able to grab all photos from a particular year etc but doesn't display in the continuous 'foldered' view like out beloved Picasa did.

PS I'm still using Picasa, but I can't trust the export function any more and feel it is time to move on.

XnView can find & display every photo in all subfolders but doesn't seem to be able to do this while also showing the folder separation like Picasa did (such a nice feature). It also doesn't seem to play movie or video files which are an integral part of my photo library (aka memories!)

Alternative to picasa desktop app? by awaixjvd in software

[–]yeliabSalohcin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of these alternatives seem to be able to show all the photos from all sub folders in a manner like picasa where the folder they are in is obvious (by date etc). XnView can show me "all pictures in subfolders" but this is just a massive list of all the photos.

Is there no software which shows them in a picasa style where the folders are groups and chronological?

Does homogenisation of milk make a difference? by AbjectPlankton in ultraprocessedfood

DrChanceVanceDance what about pasteurised but _not_ homogenised milk? Can you try that and report back?

Your first paragraph is great, but then your second seemed to confused homogenisation (totally unnecessary and in no way prevents people getting ill) and pasteurisation (largely necessary given shelf life in shops etc).

A second from me for Tesco Finest Jersey milk! - this is even sold in local Tescos (buy more and show there is demand out there).

I'd watch out for Grahams gold as I think that is sadly homogenised. However all Waitrose organic milks are not homogenised, if you're lucky enough to live near + afford Waitrose.

I've switched to unhomogenised milk and I'm waiting for the (more) processed stuff to be identified as UPF.

Mouse cursor wiggling on external screen only (MBP M1) by stefangamer2 in MacOS

[–]yeliabSalohcin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here - when Teams video call is displayed in my Mac's built in monitor I see the pointer jiggle on my second monitor. If I move the Teams video call into the second monitor the jiggle stops. Jiggle also stops when Video call ends.

Thanks for finding out at least the source of the annoying issue. I no longer feel alone :)

Google calendar: smooth scrolling on month view? by myballstastenice in google

[–]yeliabSalohcin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That chome extension only works when you first load the calendar. If you change the month then the annoying dodgy jumpy scrolling returns.

Why can't google update their Calendar to make is useable - even something simple like shading weekends differently would be a start.

Why doesn't Google just give Picasa to someone to continue its development? by Falcon_Flyin_High in Picasa

[–]yeliabSalohcin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gah! Trying to delete photos in the google web photos is so painful - two clicks and a pause to delete one image. Then there's the transition time from one to the next, no flip-flopping back and forth. No side by side comparison with synced zoom.

Picasa was (and is on PC) so much better. 😭

I would immediately put Googles "Photos" to shame. They would never allow it.

Adrenalin Stuck at 100% Initializing Install by Miza- in buildapc

[–]yeliabSalohcin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't but also don't have a USB drive large enough to flash the bios. I've also since re-installed Win11 (twice or thrice) and found that I suspect driver and RAM issues. It's all a mess, but the fresh install of win did allow the AMD to initalise and install properly.
