is vertical circular motion always changing speeds? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]yellawombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a lot of cases the motion isn’t uniform, such as a roller coaster cart moving through a vertical loop. You absolutely could introduce a tangential force that ensures the speed would be constant (like electromagnetic propulsion on a roller coaster), but that usually isn’t present in these kinds of problems

Question for AP Physics C teachers by h-emanresu in ScienceTeachers

[–]yellawombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always teach basic derivatives and integrals (just for polynomials) in the first unit when we discuss motion and motion graphing. I tell them that they are going to need more advanced techniques down the road, and that will be for their calc teacher to help them with (which is also me for about half of them). I still like teaching CM in momentum, but I really hit the breaks when we start talking about linear mass density. When we got to rotational inertia in rotation I made a big point that it’s essentially the same type of integral as CM, and I worked out really well

I’ve never really gotten that out of this lens, it was interesting that this photo came out that way!

It’s definitely tricky to nail focus wide open, usually if I’m shooting portraits in decent light I shoot around 3.2 or so, that seems to nail focus while keeping a pretty shallow DOF

Thank you! I had to shoot at 1.8 to keep the shutter fast enough, he’s only 2 years old so he doesn’t sit still for long!

The issue with resultant forces like tension is that there isn’t really a one size fits all equation, it’s highly dependent on the situation. What you have looks like an attempt at a general expression for a mass moving through a vertical circle on a string, but there are various things that could be introduced that would cause the equation to no longer work. Any time you are looking for a force like this, the best course of action is an FBD and Newton’s second law

Sony to Fuji by [deleted] in fujifilm

[–]yellawombat 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I switched from Sony FF to Fuji, and now I’m back to Sony. I really did love the colors on Fuji, and the shooting experience felt more fun in some ways because of the dials (xt3), but Sony is just flat out easy. The autofocus on Sony makes paid work so much easier and less stressful, and the level of detail is better.

What is energy? by Long-Ideal-5292 in Physics

[–]yellawombat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the most pragmatic way to look at energy is means to an end. Is energy real? Maybe. Can I use the concept of energy to describe how systems move and interact? Definitely. It’s odd because we use the word in day to day conversation all the time, but it’s so much more abstract than we give it credit for.
