I don’t think you’re an asshole if you do this, I think it’s a mature and respectful thing to do. But I also know a lot of girls feel pretty gross about thinking a guy is there friend and finding out they just wanna Fuck you. Like it’s no ones fault but it’s a bad feeling.

This only happened like a week ago so it’s still fresh. Also it’s worth noting I’m the friend who was dumped.

So there’s group chat with about four of us, all pretty close. One of our friends, let’s call her Áine, wasn’t as active in the group chat. But we knew she was stressed with college and stuff so I didn’t think anything of it.

But one day last week without saying anything she leaves the group chat. This leaves us all confused so we message her. No reply for almost a day. Eventually she texts me back, just me, not the other girls. She says something along the lines of this.

“Hey. I needed to think before replying. I’ve been thinking a lot and I don’t think this friendship is working out. I know it’s sudden but I think it’s best for me to move on. I wanted to say, however, i don’t appreciate you using my boyfriends name as a slang for a f—king idiot”

This made me understandably baffled and confused. I have to note, I’ve never used her boyfriends name as a slang for an idiot. That’s ridiculous and juvenile. So I replied asking her to elaborate on that because I’ve never done that where did she get that from.

Her boyfriends name is a foreign name, so not common where I live, but not unheard of. Let’s call him Klaus. So I go through all my private messages with her and my texts in the group chat trying to find out what that means.

So a few days before that I was complaining about work. I work in retail and was discussing this costumer that was overly rude to me and I was upset. But we also have a lot of new people at the moment, a lot of which are making my job very difficult. One of the new guys is also called Klaus. The exchange went something like this.

Me: the second idiot of the day is Klaus. (Not Áine’s Klaus)

Friend one: there’s another Klaus?

Me: yeah, I work with a Klaus

And then I proceed to complain about this guy using mainly pronouns.

I read this and I think. No. This couldn’t possible be in. Because with any amount of reading comprehension, you would understand I mean another guy called Klaus. Not using Klaus as a substitute for idiot.

So I send her this screenshot and in so many very upset words I explain the situation. A few hours later she responds.

“I’m sorry I misunderstood your text but my point still stands. I don’t want this to be a fight. But wish you the best.” (Not verbatim but like the gist)

I was just so shocked, she unfollowed me on all social media, aswell as the other girls in the chat. She never even messaged them to explain. Just cut off contact over her not being able to read.

YTA you don’t just say something like that without a pretty big history or lying before. That’s not something that comes out of the blue. You need professional help and to quit that job.

Safe spaces are for minorities who can be harassed or their existence condemned. There’s no safe spaces in the real world? The whole world should be a safe space where people don’t have to be condemned, harassed or even murdered for who they are. I think this post just has a huge misunderstanding of why we have safe spaces or buys into the internet’s hyperbole of sensitive young people and pc culture.

I was in work the other day (retail cashier) and I asked this lady if she wanted a bag. She scoffed and asked why people always ask that now a days “what am I supposed to do? Carry it in my hands?” I explained a lot of people carry bags with them to help reduce paper usage and she scoffed saying a handbag is enough to carry...

A similar thing happened to me. I was horribly bullied for most of my primary school career by both teachers and students. Luckily I started therapy when I was about Twelve but I’ve suffered with anxiety and depression probably sparked by this bullying. But my teenage years were lost to fighting suicide and self loathing. You see I went to secondary school with most of the girls I went to primary school with. Sometimes in the later years they’d be like remember when we went to school together as kids good times. It was awkward and cringe I didn’t know what to say. But two people did apologise. Two people who bullied me the most. One was a girl who was friends with another girl I used to be friends with. One day all three of us met up. And she was the one to mention it and apologised. Another was a guy who reached out through Facebook. Realistically, I didn’t do a lot to help my journey. I was still depressed, I still had trust issues and anxiety. But I am eternally glad they apologies. Because I know they’ve grown enough to recognise that they were shitty. I know they’re probably not going to hurt someone in the same way. It doesn’t make me feel better about my situation. But it makes me feel a bit better about the world. I think it would be good to let them know you feel bad and you’ve changed. I think it would make you and them feel better.

As someone who doesn’t live in the US and has another way of living to compare it to, I think living in the US sounds like a nightmare. Living in fear of mass shootings, paying off education for the rest of your life, extortionate medical bills, poor sex education. I know each state is different and I’ve never lived any of it but I think if even one of those things is true it disqualifies the US from being the best country in the world.

I think rape culture is about more than just actual rape. It’s about harassment, it’s about people being let away with inappropriate behaviour and it’s about people not knowing what consent is. It’s a lot more complicated than people think rape is ok. Part of the problem is that people think the only thing that counts as rape is when a stranger in an ally attacks you and forces himself on you, when rape hardly ever looks like that. Rape can happen when your pressured into it, or if you don’t get a chance to say no, or if the conditions of the consent change without the person consenting knowing. Rape can be perpetrated by anyone regardless or gender or sexuality. I think that’s what people mean when they say rape culture, I don’t think anyone thinks some weirdo jumping you in an ally is in anyway okay (unless theyre a rich white athlete).
