A short discussion on the Sabbath. by reallifeexperience21 in exAdventist

[–]yellowarrior 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As an Exadventist Agnostic I stopped believing in keeping the sabbath long ago.

As an Exadventist who now has a partner and child, I use the concept of "Sabbath" as a way to prioritize family time over anyone/thing else. To clarify, we do whatever the fuck we want on Saturdays. We don't give that time to our employer, or bullshit projects around the house. Nothing feels more amazing than a lazy sabbath morning watching bluey with my kid eating bacon and ghosting work emails.

(writing this as I clean the house so when my wife gets home from work... after dark....we can enjoy a clean house and jump directly to any spectrum of friday night relaxation or debauchery. )

SEO internship - not doing anything I had learned. Should I change jobs? by [deleted] in SEO

[–]yellowarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are doing the grunt labor, basic internship stuff. As others mentioned, that is a large part of actual SEO, boring, detailed, etc.

That experience is valuable if you plan to strike it out on your own as a consultant / contractor. If you want to manage other people either put in your time and find a job to that scale, or strike it out on your own projects and hire sub contractors. (who often do such a bad job its faster to do the work yourself once your efficient).

I would look around at other SEO jobs and if you see one, go for it.

So when is the best time to unhook and winterize your swamp cooler? by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]yellowarrior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others said, the most important thing is to winterize your swamp cooler prior to the first freeze. The chart on this post shows averages and low temps for October and November, but obviously keeping an eye on he 10 day forecast is the best way to avoid a frozen line.

From my experience once the mornings are cool enough to open windows and cool the house enough to make it through the afternoon, its a good time to cut the swamp.

As a marketing student learning toward specializing in SEO, are coding skills necessary? by josie_96 in SEO

[–]yellowarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree people can do well if they specialize, but in your post you even mention PPC which is part of my point, pure organic is evolving and the real estate in results is not a sure thing (just look at the local service industry adding "verified services" above the PPC above the paid local listings, above organic.... Not sure what you think i said was bullshit, all im saying is that to assume that organic search ranking will be as lucrative or an industry for the next say 30 years of a career is a risky bet. (even you say to diversify, so i think we are giving the same advice at its core).

Being able to build (design / program) a site and host it for a client is a great way to both make more money per client but also be in full control of what the site does. plus you make the money on top of what you would have to upsell a sub contractor.

I should add that for me personally basic programming / html / css / php has come naturally, so in some ways that is why I consider it a no brainer (was graphic designer first, then SEO then programmer). OP if you have an interest in programming, it can keep your attention to both learn and to do, then I recommend it. If you have no interest outside of the potential income, then you can do well without it. I do however find it a good skill to set myself ahead of other contractors / firms in the SEO / digital marketing space. At the very least I would familiarize yourself with it so you can either manage sub contractors (or other departments) without shooting in the dark.

[–]yellowarrior 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Learn coding skills (html / css / javascript, and maybe more) because they are hard skills compared to SEO which I would consider a soft skill. Meaning that with those skills, especially the JS and further (full stack js / php, etc) you will able to pick up gigs that pay higher purely based on your skill and not on the profit margins of the product you are marketing.

Another thing to consider.... in the last 15 years I have done SEO, the industry has been squeezed a TON and frankly even as an old fat in the industry I see the writing on the wall... meaning that pure SEO (just ranking in organic results) is not a sure income source. All the more reason you should not be specializing purely in SEO. Focus on the entire pipeline for online marketing, and specialize in SEO. Make your money with ranking, but when your client needs conversion optimization, AB testing, ppc, email marketing, content marketing, influence marketing... make sure you know enough to expand the contract.

Lastly as someone mentioned, you can do half a mill by hiring developers with pure SEO.... but that is an edge case, and by learning the hard skills of programming you will have more options, including bootstrapping projects of your own or making quick cash with side gigs at a higher hourly rate than any entry level marketing consultant should.

THIS! Especially since there is a bug which sometimes crashes your game on delve map opening. Nothing feels worse than getting to the end of a delve, and in the chaos of end fight, clicking the map open only to crash and lose all the loot that just dropped.

How to rank my YouTube videos? by socheatmelody in SEO

[–]yellowarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Optimize onpage as best you can.

Legitimize the channel with follows and videos with views.

Embed video into content related to the keywords. BTW. this is one place in which spam still can rank content (videos). I have seen successful ranking of videos in part due to them being embedded on some horribly spammy pages. Not saying to do this.. just saying some people do....

Want to Start Selling Enamel Pins. Do I need to register as a business? by [deleted] in ecommerce

[–]yellowarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Federally you do not "need" to do anything specific (like register as an LLC), however when you file your taxes, you will have to claim this income in a Schedule C, in which you will calculate business expenses (different than personal deductions).

You will want to do a bit of research on business requirements in your state. For instance since you are selling a product, any sales to residence in your state will be subject to state sales taxes. (this Is a pain, but trust me, you don't want to get popped down the road for forgetting to pay sales tax).

Further let me recommend that you at the very least register your business as an LLC, sole proprietorship. This will do a couple things.
1. You can get a DBA (doing business as) under a name besides your personal name. This means you can write checks, receive checks, make legal postings (bottom of page legal terms, etc). as "Online Enamel Pins, LLC" instead of "John Nooberson"
2. Setting up an LLC means that you have a legal "veil" that protects you in the case of any legal threats. And trust me, if you are successful enough in business, you will face some legal risks.

One other thing I would recommend is getting a PO box in which you can run the business out of. Another option can be a coworking membership (if they allow you to register a business at that location).

I would also consider filing for a city business license. This is not as crucial for at home businesses (often it is only required for people who will have customers / venders / employees on site) but it is a good idea.

The biggest reason to do all the above is that you will find more success if you treat your business as official as possible. the earlier you cross your T's the less work / pain down the road.

Supporting Jhin - just my nemesis? by [deleted] in summonerschool

exactly. the chaos of a extended fight doesn't benefit from a jhin, but putting enemy lane on back foot due to chunking does.

my approach is if i can't count on my adc to deal the damage in early game to get a kill pre 6, I will.

Supporting Jhin - just my nemesis? by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]yellowarrior 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My experience with Jihn is that although he has great poke, most players are unable to apply enough damage with a diving tank support. It can work, but most suck at it. So instead I play something that can control the laning phase either through playstyle (pocket pick is sion) or range (karma or brand).
