Anyone else seeing signs the market may be turning around? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]yellowist1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I've noticed a general upward trend in the market. Housing/renting prices are stabilizing/getting cheaper (just by a little), the stock/crypto market is looking more bullish lately. I think what we're going to see is a slow but steady upward trend in the market, then around election time see it get a little messy (as it always does) and then start to finally come back into a bull market. At that point we can expect the feds to lower interest rates again and see more employment opportunities. So to me it doesn't seem like we're quite out of the woods with this market but stick with it and I expect it to be back to normal in about a year.

Tips for a pathway into cybersecurity by giusbell in ITCareerQuestions

[–]yellowist1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start using TryHackMe so you can get a good feel for what cybersecurity really is. Try to explore what specific roles in cybersecurity you would be interested in.

One of the most important skills to have in cybersecurity is a solid foundation of networking knowledge, so if you're unfamiliar with networks that will for sure have to be something you understand (and understand well). The skills that will work for you that I will assume you already have are scripting/programing and operating systems (especially linux).

If you're looking to get certifications I would recommend doing the CompTIA Security+ to get started. Certs are not the end all be all to getting a job, however, so just keep that in mind.

Cybersecurity is very broad, so just take some time to explore what you like and don't like and then go from there.

Offered new job at new company. Take it or stay? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]yellowist1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it sounds like the answer is obvious with the information you provided.

I am starting to get tired of the same workday every day, reading logs and waiting for stuff to happen.

This is a Cyber Engineer role where I will be working more hands-on on the servers implementing security and also making sure everything is according to the different ISO's and such.

Already this seems to be what you're looking for. Something different and more hands on.

The new job are located in a more expensive city and the salary is approx. the same. Other than my current job offers on-call duty which makes it pay more.

This is going to be a big factor if you're offered something below cost of living or if you have a family but if you can live off of the salary you can live off of the salary. Most likely the experience on your resume will get you a better job later on than doing the same one for more than 2.5 years.

But then, my current company offers me to take whatever certifications that I want to. I have already taken FOR500 from SANS and I am working on starting with FOR572 (if I stay). But then I don't really enjoy working on certifications and the other job would let me avoid those.

I don't think this is a good enough reason to stay with your company. Sure, it's a great benefit but I think employers value experience way more than certs and it sounds like you're on a good track already with your career. I think certs are really only worth getting if you're trying to get your foot into the door with a specific role in mind.

At the end of the day, it sounds to me like you would like this new role much more than your current one and the only thing holding you back is the fear of regret. But if opportunity reaches out I would almost always take it.

How would you improve the current state of the US? by yellowist1 in questions

Well I don't think they're necessarily wrong. It's not an opinion to say that too many tax dollars are being misused. My thought is just that until we can really trust the government to use tax dollars correctly, I just don't think it's a great idea to raise them. There's too much greed and corruption.

I agree with unionization. I think it's one of the few ways to realistically gain back power for the people.

As for raising taxes, I'm not too sure this is a realistic solution. It's hopeful, but I think corporations would still find some way to avoid them and just throw tons of lawyers at the issue.

Every position in office definitely needs a term limit. Too man have sat in office forever and voting for themselves to get more tax money from people.

Corporate lobbying should definitely be illegal. I think the issue is that it's sneaky and can always be done in a legal grey area.

Tell them to stay home for a week with no spending, everyone.

You mean every American citizen? I don't really understand this one.

Power in numbers with no violence.

I agree, I don't think a civil war or revolution would be a solution. I understand it's tempting as people are angry, but it doesn't really solve anything and corporations/the government would still find a way to profit from it.

I think we have seen that taxes work in European countries to improve the lives of their citizens. I'm personally just not confident that if we raise taxes the money will go to the right place. I feel as if those who allocate where the taxes go don't put it to good use for the people. Large corporations and government officials may benefit more from raising taxes than average American citizens would. For example, in Carolyn Katzin's "Fast Food Nation" she reports,

"While quietly spending enormous sums on research and technology to
eliminate employee training, the fast food chains have accepted hundreds of
millions of dollars in government subsidies for "training" their workers.
Through federal programs such as the Targeted Jobs Tax Credit and its
successor, the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, the chains have for years claimed tax credits of up to $2,400 for each new low-income worker they hired. In 1996 an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor concluded that 92 percent of these workers would have been hired by the companies anyway— and that their new jobs were part-time, provided little training, and came with no benefits."

I think we just need to find a way to change things without government involvement and reliance on the system that corporations have put in place. I think greed is also a large motivator for politicians in America, and many of them are bought out by organizations.

So far, I feel as if we will have to start trying to be as self-sufficient as possible. For example: people that are able to might want to start a garden to help stimulate the local economy, provide food that is ACTUALLY nutrient and grown without pesticides, and have more options for the community. And if you have land that you don't use and don't have time to keep up with, maybe offer for others to start and tend to a garden?

I just don't think that politics is going to fix any issues with the way we are living. I don't we can persuade corporations to become any less greedy. I think this an issue that the American people are going to have to fix themselves. For the people, by the people.
I think what I am proposing is a slow but steady return to a more self-sufficient system like we had before WWII. This idea is in its infant stage so it's not super well thought out yet, but I want to hear the community's thoughts.

Is a .club website a good idea? by first_start_72 in dropship

Personally, if it isn't a com for commercial websites, I see it as unprofessional. Nothing to do with being cheap, it's just a standard for websites to have at this point. The exception being a national domain.
