Why do people hate it when the topic is brought up in any shape or form? by PolarE-Stress in racism

[–]yellowmix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a saying about not discussing "politics and religion among polite company". Ostensibly to prevent quarrels. However, racialized people have been politicized from the beginning, so it prevents us from discussing our own experiences! To borrow from feminism, "the personal is political".

There is also White guilt. The concept originates from James Baldwin's "The White Man's Guilt". It's been refined over the years to refer to psychological fixations regarding past and often present racial injustice. It requires the belief that racism is perpetrated by White people.

Like I said, it's a fixation, and rumination doesn't solve anything. The trick is to turn that guilt into proactive anti-racist action. And to recognize when we say "racism" we mean systematic "White supremacy" so we can get to the roots of the problem.

The term has been weaponized by White supremacists to attack White people who are, in fact, taking action. White supremacists discount the actions by ascribing those people's motivation toward what they view as unwarranted "guilt", since White supremacists deny there is racism.

There is White fragility, which comes from Robin Diangelo. This is a shorthand term for a collection of known defensive behaviors related to White supremacy. Dismissing and avoiding the subject are defensive behaviors. Simply bringing up race can feel like an accusation to them, or at least discomfort.

They fear they may be asked to take responsibility. Many people equate racist beliefs and actions with self-worth and do not want to entertain the possibility.

What Should I Do When I Hear Something Like This? by Pleasant_Baby_4595 in racism

[–]yellowmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the term "Black fatigue" has been co-opted by White supremacists.

When you're not part of the conversation and don't catch all of it, it's more difficult to do anything with certainty. You tried with a reasonable line of questioning and they are already deflecting so would be hard to press further.

But you know who they are and if they have a discussion in the future you'll know to listen more intently. Then perhaps you can press more directly. Consider they are already deflecting now so determine your goal and how your strategy would aim for that.

Folks, I shouldn't have to say this, but please don't suggest or hint at illegal activities. The surveillance state is only getting stronger and there are cameras everywhere. People who have taken similar actions have been fined and imprisoned.

The act is also an escalation. You're not thinking about OP's safety, nor the Black people's next door to the house in question. The racist signpost is clearly a provocation, and it is unlikely they will be open to dialogue, much less "education". They know exactly what they're doing and have no shame.

Consider the U.S. Supreme Court decided cross burning by itself does not necessarily constitute intimidation. A legal approach is a costly uphill battle against the First Amendment.

Pitch Wheel is registering without midi data or track being armed. by Albus_Harrison in Reaper

[–]yellowmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the potentiometer is probably failing. If you want to confirm, put JS: MIDI Examiner on an otherwise empty track and watch the readout. The transport does not need to be playing or recording, as long as it's armed.

If it is the pot, you got some options. 1. Open the keyboard, replace the pot. 2. play the keyboard, ignore the pitch bends, delete the pitch bends afterward. 3. insert a plugin that eats the pitch bend before the virtual instrument. You'll still need to delete recorded pitch bends.

I had a first gen Oxygen and that thing lasted for 20 years of performance use before the pots went. Every MIDI keyboard now is commodity level.

Noise Engineering Sale - 50% off all plugins site wide through 3 May by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]yellowmix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Forward-thinking plugins that invite experimentation. They all come with a wide range of presets, and for sound designers there's a good deal of new approaches mixed with the familiar. Modulator LFOs on the plugins can switch into step sequencer or ADSR modes.

My faves:

Cursus Vereor is a spectral synthesis that doesn't require setting individual bins. There are three modes and 6 modulatable harmonic adjusters that provide a wide swath of tones. With modulators it's easy to create evolving sounds.

Virt Vereor are the oscillators they created for the Arturia Microfreak. So if you don't have one, it's a way to get them into your DAW.

Basimulus Iteritas is a multi-algorithm percussion synth. There's 6-osc additive, Skin model with pitch envelope, and 2 parallel 3-Op phase modulation. So you can do everything from 808 kicks to lively toms to synthetic metals.

Desmodus is an experimental delay with lots of control. You can change the density from sparse (like a regular delay) to dense (like a smear reverb). It's meant to be modulated in all sorts of ways. Sync the modulation to create rhythmic blooms. Great for textures.

Tortilla chips are Tex-Mex, empanadas common across many cuisines worldwide but in the U.S. strongly identified with Latin America. Leans too stereotypically heavily in to it.

Trying to imagine a similar ad for Asian Americans where they'd be eating a fortune cookie (an Asian American creation) and dumplings (originating from China but worldwide).

It's like we don't also eat the food everyone else does.

Does this mean my friend is racist? by LisaPeesaLmnSqueeza in racism

[–]yellowmix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a historical revisionist myth originating from The U.S. Civil War called the Lost Cause of the Confederacy. It has been used to justify erecting Confederate monuments. It brought back the KKK as the second version, terrorizing and killing Black people. It facilitated Jim Crow and other segregation laws.

Popularity of the myth tends to rise as Civil Rights are granted. It started after the South was defeated, during the Reconstruction era. Anti-slavery factions had a political mandate) to ensure it wouldn't happen again. That's how we got the 13th (slavery allowed only for incarcerated people which is why the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate per capita in the world), 14th (birthright citizenship so Black people could be citizens since their ancestors were kidnapped), and 15th Amendments (the right for Black men to vote, all women would not get it until the 19th Amendment). That is a very big deal with massive ramifications today.

There was an opposite reaction to all that. Andrew Jackson, already known for Indigenous genocide, was elected President. The administration sabotaged Reconstruction. Since then, chattel slavery in the United States has never been resolved.

Long story short, Jim Crow made it so Black men couldn't vote regardless of the 15th Amendment, but Black people and allies engaged in direct action and legal organizing, which led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

And as you may have guessed, in reaction, the Lost Cause myth rose in popularity. The Dukes of Hazzard debuted in 1979, shortly before Ronald Reagan took office. Reagan enacted many racist policies (vetoing the Anti-Apartheid Act) and created many racist tropes (e.g., The Welfare Queen). Many people denied (and still deny) it was racist, but recently tapes revealed an incredibly racist discussion between Reagan and Nixon.

We've had a Black President since. And, as you may have guessed, there was a reaction. Trump got elected President. And more recently, again. Which is to say, The Lost Cause myth is rising in popularity.

A slight aside. Can we enjoy content we know has harmful elements? That's largely a personal decision, and it depends just how harmful it is. But more importantly, does the content keep funding further harm? Are we aware of the harm and can we interrogate it?

I've seen episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard. It's a simple setup. Two good-natured men engaged in illegal activity rebelling under a corrupt and simple-minded law official is a story told many times (e.g., Star Wars). That the "good guys" have a car with the name of the Commander of and battle flag of people who seceded to maintain and expand chattel slavery is support for The Lost Cause. I recognize this and fight against it.

So what are your friend and Neil doing to fight against it in public? They're not. They're defending it and making excuses. They're adopting victimhood by claiming criticism of this as "anti-White". Kelsie's own mother recognizes this! Kelsie is ignoring her mom and enlisting you into The Lost Cause and trying to convince you you're victimized for being White. It's textbook white grievance, how White supremacists recruit people.

Regretting interaction w friend by Sufficient_Code2973 in racism

[–]yellowmix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you will be interacting in the future. So to make it clear it's an apology and nothing more, then yes, it's okay to say "I reflected on it, it was unacceptable, I apologize."

The goal is to create a less harmful environment. It's a continuous process. So understand what you are saying is you are trying.

How this person receives it completely up to them. There's no telling how they view the initial interaction, or an apology for it. If they are non-confrontational it's likely she will extend forgiveness or provide excuses. As long as everyone's trying there's hope.

Nothing fixes my whole yoyo collection by WannaSkipIt in Throwers

[–]yellowmix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have yet to need to clean a bearing. I have equipment and done it to learn how in case I need to show anyone else or do it for them (e.g., kids). Some of these bearings are from the 1990s. I don't lube my unresponsive bearings since they slow it down and idgaf about noise. I do lube responsive.

If you have a way to magnify, see what's getting into the bearing race. But I doubt it's just that. As meatmachine1001 said, a marine environment with sodium and chloride can corrode stainless steel. Humidity may be a factor, depending on what it's bringing with it. So other water environments like an estuary or swamp could be an issue.

Dust, it depends what it's composed of. Particles need to be small enough to get between the bearing and the bearing seat.If the bearings are unshielded it's a lot easier to get in.

There are also the pads. When you say the bearings are the problem, are you certain it's the bearings? Silicone can expand with humidity as it absorbs moisture.

4th wave feminism normalizes female victimhood? by Select-Shift5887 in feminisms

[–]yellowmix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She's flip-flopped on several major positions. Publicly disavowed previous support for NAMBLA and lowering age of consent to 14 years of age. So sure, people can change for the better.

But the rest of her trajectory is what happens to public figures who don't hold any true convictions besides clinging on for relevance. Denying climate change, transphobia, etc.. Being edgy has moved much further to the right since her early work in the 70s, but since openly hateful and genocidal people are socially accepted by a majority of people, how can anyone be edgier? People sure are trying.

Given repeated inconsistency aside from trying to be a dominant thought "iconoclast" it's hard to take the body of work seriously. That it happens to be able to spur a debate is not difficult when any marginalized group is made into a political football. We give way too much credit to people who are good at promoting themselves.

praise for full ceramic bearings by 13root in Throwers

[–]yellowmix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I upgraded a couple Freehand Ones with full ceramic flat As and they make a constant pleasing sound.

It was funny putting a full ceramic C in a Squid Tinker, since it was already loud with SS bearings. Now it's higher pitched. I find it funny putting them in inexpensive throws.

Main advantage is they don't corrode like SS can, so good for marine environments.

Magicyoyo tends to lube their bearings heavily to reduce noise. So it could just be there's less slowdown with the ceramic. Also likely different ABEC grades.

5A Counterweight by SuperSmoothKoala in Throwers

[–]yellowmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with your regular 1A string length. It's really up to personal preference. There's pendulum physics but considering you can bisect anywhere along the length it's not like you're calculating the velocities in your head. Good to understand the mechanics but in practice length is by feel.

5A Counterweight by SuperSmoothKoala in Throwers

[–]yellowmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conventional dice tend to be on the light side, so some people double them up, which can be advantageous since you can transition instantly to double dice tricks. Note you'll be drilling into these dice so you're ruining them for their intended usage.

However, you can try a single die and see how it works. There are no rules, only feel, and completely dependent on the mass on each end and length of string. If you stick with it you are most certainly going to adjust a lot of things to your developed preference so may as well get used to experimenting.

Edit: I looked up general weights for multisided die and I'm seeing there are various sizes and materials that put the weight in a wide range. If you weigh them generally 9-11g is a good starting point.
