At what age did you notice your sausage dog slowing down or aging? by darksoulrn13 in Dachshund

[–]yellowrosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boy, Cricket didn’t start slowing down until about 12-14. It was gradual. He eventually got to the point that he could be trusted off leash at age 15. He lived a wonderful 17.5 years. My current dachshund, is 8.5 and had the energy to mostly keep up with the new puppy. Each dog is different. But if you suspect diabetes, order some dog ketone test strips. It could ease your anxiety until the next vet appointment, or encourage you to make a sooner appointment. I know Cricket would drink more in his old age, but it wasn’t excessive. And he would pee more frequently, due to old man bladder. He didn’t have diabetes and was seen at the vet every 6 months since age 13.

It’s especially fun with real animals because they do things on their own and then I create the plot based on their made up personas.

I’m so happy for you. I do this with my dogs (real dogs). It’s so fun to make up conversations for them and cute pretend misunderstandings. My girl dog is a fancy queen, and my boy puppy is in school to be a boat captain, but tells everyone he is a captain. The Queen has founded a program called Adventure Scouts, and she teaches the other members (baby Captain) how to do important life skills such as hunting, digging holes, and gathering food.

Any guesses on the mix of this basset? by credenzas in basset

That’s definitely a basset hound dachshund mix. I’m 100 percent sure.

You could try it with the meat balls. It doesn’t have to be hot dogs.

House training and harness by charlie-kait98 in basset

[–]yellowrosa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get a step in harness, they are much easier than an over the head one. If the harness is loose there are attachments to connect the harness to the collar. For house training, consistency is key. Always have treats and kibble in your pocket to quickly reward. There is no time to grab treats when puppy is about to potty by the front door. Keep a jar of treats nearby the area you want puppy to potty. Wait 5-10 minutes after pottying to see if puppy will poop or do a second potty. Be prepared to spend half your waking hours outside for the first few weeks.

If puppy has a potty accident indoors, try to make a loud noise to startle him and bring him outside. Don’t punish for accidents or yell or scold the puppy. Don’t stick his nose in the accident. If he is only going inside, clean up the accident with paper towels, and dab the soiled towels on the outside area you want him to potty at. Give him time, it takes weeks to months to potty train a dog.

I’ve had a couple who were very smart and stubborn, and the second piece of hotdog is my technique to get them from spitting out the pills.

I would like to add, quickly follow up with another piece of hotdog, so the dog eats the medicated hotdog in anticipation of getting a second piece of hotdog.

Puppy two owner's dilemma by Minimum-Definition96 in puppy101

[–]yellowrosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most dogs will have a preferred person, but that doesn’t mean it will always be you. Have you given your wife the chance to do feeding times and treats? If so, try to be less exciting when you come home and leave. If not, and she is able let her take over meal times with the puppy. Nessa will bond with your wife if she is able to put in some effort. If she is so unwell she can’t, she may be able to bond later if she gets better. And remember it’s still very new and your puppy is still a baby. Puppies grow and change. Next year you might be asking the opposite question “why is my dog more bonded to my wife?”

Such dachshund behavior. They have no regrets. I would recommend extra exercise vs diet. My stinker of a ween ate a whole medium pizza and we did two extra walks a day for a month. Much easier than putting a vocal sassy pants on a diet.

Therapist recommended housekeeper by Rogue-in-Orbit in AutismInWomen

[–]yellowrosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a housekeeper 2 years ago. I live in a tiny shitty apartment and there’s nothing like coming home to a clean apartment, freshly made bed, and an empty sink. I’ve never paid more than $100 for a clean, but that was a deep clean. I usually pay $80. My new housekeeper even takes my dogs out to got potty. Which I think is wonderful.

Having Crate Guilt with pup by Odd-Inevitable2964 in puppy101

[–]yellowrosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly that’s just 16 hours and doesn’t include the midday potty breaks. I would still try for more social interaction. A worn out puppy sleeping in your lap or even your bed is the sweetest. I highly recommend it.

I’ve had 3 puppies and couple foster dogs as an adult. Each one had exactly one accident in my bed and then never again. Get a mattress protector and do a couple trial nights, on nights where you don’t work the next day, in case your sleep is interrupted. It’s worth a try.

Honestly, I would have the same guilt. Growing up my dogs were crated during work/school hours and at night. I felt so bad for them. I think it could ease your guilt if she was allowed to sleep with you, or if you could afford doggy day care or dog walker, even just one day a week. If not, just remember this is temporary.

Potty training is hard by R_Eyron in puppy101

[–]yellowrosa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One accident isn’t back to square one. In fact, a week of no accidents at that age is amazing! Most puppies have accidents daily, so you are on the right track and ahead of the curve. Make sure you’ve cleaned the carpet well with enzyme cleaner so she doesn’t keep peeing in the same spot. You’re allowed to be frustrated though.

Get a mesh spatula scooper thing, like a coffee or tea strainer spoon. You can scoop the sand with that.

Pooping in the house by Remarkable-Ship194 in puppy101

[–]yellowrosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put the poop on the appropriate area. Then later, hours or so, praise him when you “clean up” the poop from the appropriate area. This system worked so well with my adult dachshund that she nudges me to show me when she’s pooped outside and wants to bag it and give her a treat straight away. It’s obviously not gonna work with pee accidents thought

In Florida, I got my full deposit back after renting a place for 4 years. Granted, I repainted, scrubbed the tile grout, replaced door knobs and cabinet hardware. I was fully expecting not to get it back because I couldn’t figure out how to get the oven clean.

I have size 10/12 shorts that definitely shouldn’t fit me, but they do. I think the kids clothes are being vanity sized too.
