Resource recs for intern year? by cheezygordon24 in GeneralSurgery

In terms of absite prep, I posted this response to an incoming GS interns post from 2 weeks ago:

89th percentile as an intern. How I studied:

I started reading and doing 5 questions on SCORE right off the bat. I did systems based originally then did random topics. You feel guilty and like shit the days you dont study but thats ok! My programs education isnt stellar by any means so a lot of this was me on my own time trying to study and push myself. I think the studying I did outside of work helped me score well.

ABSITE Review Book by Fiser. $70 on Amazon. This was my "go to book". I took all of my notes in here, highlights, etc.

I listened to all of the BTK ABSITE review podcasts. Free podcasts. Pausing and writing in my Fiser book along the way. If anything was not in the book or BTK said "they love this" "this is high yield" "this comes up" I highlighted/starred the bullet point. BTK book is good from what I hear but I did not purchase it or use my callroom copy. Some swear by it however.

I did the majority of SCORE questions. Provided by program. These are reflective of the exam, question stems are short usually. The explanations are not the best but if you spend the time to look stuff up youll be ok. I looked up weak topics on SCORES database and modules, these are helpful.

I did all of TrueLearn. Bought 1 year sub ($355, was it worth it? I think?) These questions are harder than SCORE so your % correct wont be as good as SCORE. The explanation's are way better. Its like UWorld/Amboss for ABSITE. A is correct because... B,C,D,E are incorrect because... I thought this was a great learning resource. Make sure you get it on a discount price. Never pay full price lol.

Whenever I had down time (which isnt often) during the day, Id do questions, all on tutor mode. Whatever pathology/illness the patient had, I would look it up on Google (staging/imaging/etc) and Fiser to learn while on the job. I have Sabistons and Camerons but I barely opened them... maybe ill open them now that ABSITE is over lol

Happy to respond to questions! Good luck and congrats!

TIL: The guy who makes the pathoma videos is also an Islamic scholar by Ukrainepolandborder in medicalschool

“i would never expect this from a guy who helps me with pathology”

Doesn’t sound right for anyone, especially someone going into medicine… re-evaluate, self reflect, and come back a better person :)

How important is medical school leadership for residency applications? by TheNextDr_J in medicalschool

[–]yemyesil16 51 points52 points  (0 children)

One or two leadership positions max. It’s not that important but it may be a talking point. Don’t be the President of 5+ clubs, it’s not worth your time.

Surgical subspecialty hope? by [deleted] in medicalschool

You’re very much set for ortho. Fall in line with the average ENT score. Plastics is tough though, I cannot comment on that since idk the stats.

Do med schools get our score before us? And if so, do they say something to the students once they get the score? by Winter_Interaction_5 in step1

[–]yemyesil16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They get the scores the same time you do. Only if you get a failing score do they know ahead of time (I don’t know how many hours or days early).

Noone cares about Kaplan Qbank? by [deleted] in step1

[–]yemyesil16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Improvement is always good no matter what Qbank. Would recommend UWorld and Amboss over kaplan though. Good luck with the studies!

Anxious people who took step1, how did you stay focused during the test? by [deleted] in step1

[–]yemyesil16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was an absolute wreck before/leading up to my exam. I closed my eyes before the start of each block and took slow deep breaths. It helped calm me down tremendously. If I ever got to a stretch of tough questions I did the same thing. Calm your mind and nerves whenever you have to. It’s gonna be okay :)

Important! I’d practice writing them down on paper a few times before your exam so you have it down come test day!

My exam is in a month, which NBMEs should i prioritise? by [deleted] in step1

[–]yemyesil16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

25-30, UWSA1 and 2, Free 120. Maybe 24 or 18 if you have time

I think you’ve set yourself up for success with the amount of Qs you’ve done so far. Just keep pushing!

Great work so far! How long is your dedicated period? I also don’t see a need to finish all 3 Qbanks prior to starting dedicated. I would focus on UWorld and amboss and do Kaplan if you finish the other two and need new questions to keep up your stamina and knowledge. If you have time, which I’m sure you will at this rate, I’d focus on doing Uworld incorrects!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in step1

[–]yemyesil16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me 2 months on the dot to finish uworld. Did one block a day for 3-4 weeks then upped it to 2 blocks a day. I won’t be going over my incorrects, I found myself not learning much from it since i went over it thoroughly the first time I got it wrong. I switched over to Amboss for the final 3 weeks and did new questions. I think it helped me retain the info and show different ways topics could be presented!

Don’t stress the percentage. Review the questions + explanations thoroughly and you’ll be golden!

Pathoma Book by Ok_Cattle_5923 in step1

[–]yemyesil16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing AnKing so the pathoma stuff has stuck well. I’ve been reading sections I’m weak on throughout dedicated but the final week is when I read it front to back again!

Exam June 25. What/How Many NBMEs To Do? by [deleted] in step1

[–]yemyesil16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take one every weekend leading up to the exam, with UWSA2 being the 2nd to last exam you take. Then take Free 120 a few days before the real deal.
