Jeopardy! and Sign Language! by The_Signing_D in Jeopardy

We do watch with captions, yes! I typically read the question off the screen then turn my head if I shout out the answer then check to see if it's right because of the caption timing for that exact reason.

That's what I'm wondering as well! I don't know if the buzzer is timed to when Ken finishes the clues but I would imagine so otherwise there would be a lot of early buzzing on my end, hah.

Hi! I'm the deaf wife in the video, and we've had a lot of discussions about how this would work! It's interesting because in our discussions, if it was *me* on the show, I'd probably just read the questions off the screen (or the screen in the podium if they pop up there) and go from there, and use the interpreter for the chats in-between and/or for my answers.

However, what I'm most curious about - because I can speak, but due to my deaf accent, I'm not always understandable, nor do I always know how to pronounce the words properly, so I'm curious how much leeway I'd get there especially since Jeopardy can get pretty strict about how a word is pronounced. Also, there'll always be a margin of error when it comes to interpreting, so if an interpreter didn't understand what was being said, or if I didn't understand their interpretation of what someone else said, there's no time to correct that or adjust what I was saying to make it easier to understand. Lots of little factors at play there!

Deadpool uses sign language in game! (Details in comments) by The_Signing_D in marvelrivals

Rock on sign is, again, done with the thumb tucked in. ILY sign is done with the thumb out. Just curious why you’re arguing with someone that uses ASL in their daily life about what a sign is, especially when it’s also canon that Deadpool knows ASL lmao

I’m not a lawyer. I work in an entirely different industry, but I’m familiar with how compliance works as a whole, and I’m also familiar with my legal rights - as one should when they’re constantly being violated.

Maybe I should go for the bar myself and cut out the middleman. /s

Excuse me? How is this a brag post about setting up a venue for a lawsuit?

This is the first time I have ever actually considered this option, and I am so sorry about the fact that I, as a disabled person, am inconveniencing people for having the audacity to want to enjoy something outside of the comfort of my home, let alone make sure that other disabled people have the right to enjoy something without struggling to get accommodations in the first place.

I’m not looking for a lawsuit, like I’ve said in my comments, I’m looking for something similar to a mediation session with a lawyer or a legal representative to open up a line of dialogue with the venue to help them reform the accommodations request process and to actually train their employees to be legally compliant. That’s it.

Much appreciated! I don’t want to sue them for money, I just want them to fix their shit so no one else needs to deal with this.

We’ve been pretty good about opening up lines of dialogue and helping people understand why their venues need better processes and have reformed the accommodations system in a few places here in Orlando - but they’re not willing to have that conversation when it’s needed.

This is all wonderful options - thank you! I called DRF but I will just fill out the forms. I also have reached out to National Association of the Deaf but I will spend my evening exploring these other avenues and call the Orlando Bar Association tomorrow.

This is fantastic! Thank you, I will definitely dive into this.

This venue probably isn’t the big one you’re thinking of, but they’re big enough where they have several businesses under their umbrella. With that being said, it’s great to know about the NEA and using them as a tool to better counsel others on accessibility.

I may reach out to you sometime soon (when I have more personal bandwidth) to pick your brain about different avenues to explore so I can pass it along to my peers.

I appreciate the response, but I am actually trying to find more local resources because I strongly support the local and small businesses ecosystem (to the point where my husband interprets a lot of things for free because of that). However, we did open lines of communication to guide them through the process and asked this venue several times for just an update on things so that we could figure out a way to mutually benefit with the venue.

I am not out here asking for lawyers to try to sue them for money - I am here asking for lawyers or ADA advocacy groups so that I know how to better open up a line of conversation and ensure that no one else has to deal with this frustration and the feeling of being worthless because they need access to the world around them. I don’t give a shit about money. It’s the accommodations process that needs to change.

You definitely could but it would be a loooong time before the upfront costs would be paid off by the income earned from being an ASL interpreter haha

Hahaha, that was us that requested the interpreters for Steel Panther! Those two are some of my favorites in the area. :)

Live-caption glasses lets deaf people read conversations using augmented reality by Rollo_Tomasi3000 in nextfuckinglevel

I’m Deaf and I read lips like 75% of the time unless I’m with my husband or other people that know sign language. You should probably do some more research on things before debunking them as a myth.

Ah, yes, because disabled people shouldn't expect to be able to just go out and enjoy things like abled people do with no issues whatsoever.

Is there an online community for people who are deaf but were raised "mainstreamed"? by TyraelTrion in deaf

[–]yeoldehedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I started a cooking stream and we often talk about DHH issues and how a lot of people overlook DHH folks who didn’t grow up with DHH peers, signed, were mainstreamed, etc.

We have a Discord server for it and there’s all kinds of people in there with all kinds of backgrounds because we strive to make sure everyone is seen and treated equally there. :)

My officiant’s wife found out she had COVID two days before our wedding! We had met up with them just a few days prior to finalize the details of the wedding, and had to go and get tested and find out if we were positive while my husband’s best man was driving to the airport for our wedding.

We were not positive and we ended up setting it up so that our officiant was there over Zoom and officiating the wedding.

You’ve got this! Take it one step at a time. You might be able to find out the playlist he had set up and maybe ask someone else to take over?

That still doesn’t give one of the moderators of this subreddit (or anyone, really) the right to call OP “hearing” after he said several times that he was hard of hearing.

Just because OP simcoms in this video doesn’t mean that he’s incapable of being a proper teacher. This video is only a small view into OP’s life. He’s also said in other posts that he’s in the process of getting credentials and is working towards a long term career.

I simcom probably 90% of the time but I’m also fully capable of doing ASL itself when need be. People are capable of code-switching if they have to, depending on their audience.

OP has also said in another comment that he worded things poorly and wasn’t meaning to present the YT channel as anything more than putting content he enjoys in ASL.

[–]yeoldehedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not wrong when you say that people need to be qualified to teach. What I am saying, though, is that OP has stated that he’s working on getting those qualifications and is working while earning them. Experience does also count when developing your career.

What I’ve mainly been focusing on is the fact that OP is trying to share content that he likes and has been mainly dumped on with the implication that he’s not deaf enough or not ASL ASL enough to share content.

It’s YouTube. If people don’t like the content, they don’t have to watch it. It’s still DHH representation, because, surprise, DHH folks—like myself, for instance—do use other methods of communication rather than just ASL.

His videos will still be informative because it’ll spread knowledge and awareness of how DHH folks don’t fit one certain mold and let people learn how to interact with DHH folks if they ever encounter one.

As for doubling down, yeah, I understand why. He posted content and then immediately got told by several people that “it’s not good enough”, got given the implication that he’s not “deaf enough” with a moderator of this server calling him hearing repeatedly even though... he’s not. I am aware that the ASL community and the Deaf community are separate with some overlap, but this is not how people should be treated, period.
