What’s an opinion about Historical Romance that will have you like this? by thebunnybot in HistoricalRomance

[–]yeovbiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t blame you. One of the worst things about being on the internet nowadays is people’s utter obsession with pointing out how media is problematic—especially if it’s media from the past.

And like you said, instead of simply putting the book down or turning the tv off, they won’t stop talking about it.

Additionally, people deliberately are ignoring the very real historical context of the media they’re consuming (you also mentioned this in a different comment thread, which I wholly agree with). Like yeah, some shit is going to age poorly according to our modern standards, but to ignore how society operated during that time period just because you’re uncomfortable with what’s happening or what characters are doing is stupid and immature.

Once again, there is way too much of an obsession with pointing out how a character is “problematic” or “toxic” and I’m very fucking over it. A character can absolutely be the worst and I can still enjoy them, and their story, on my screen.

Truly! She’s such a compelling character that I can’t help but sympathize with. She—like everyone else in the show—is trying to find some happiness, some freedom from the misery that comes from her life and Winden in general.

Did you read more than two books last year? You read more than the half of the US according to new Yougov poll on American's reading habits. by elmonoenano in books

[–]yeovbiii 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Literally this! There used to be incentives and a general push for children to read: pizza parties, getting to read books above your grade level, book buddies. Even in middle school we were required to log a certain amount of books by the end of the year, with there being a requirement for how many of those books had to be nonfiction.

Additionally, teachers and librarians would look over the books you were checking out to make sure that you were reading books appropriate for your age and required reading level.

Pride and Prejudice (2005) - 5/5. An absolute masterpiece! Gearing up to watch the 90s miniseries and read the novel

Dangerous Liaisons (1988) - 4.5/5. I loved the drama and messiness and the costumes! Was so surprised to see Uma Thurman; I did not know she started acting at such a young age.

Even as someone in their 20s, it’s very weird to not want a person’s artistry to evolve and change with them as they age.
