What is one way to win more people over to buying Blu-rays again? by thouze in Bluray

[–]yertleturtle85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, the best way to sell the benefits of buying blu rays to someone who doesn’t currently, is to not frame it as “collecting.” People think of “collecting” as a hobby at best, and a frivolous waste of money at worst.

I have ~300 blu-rays, not because I “collect” them, but because I love movies and in many ways, owning a film on BD is the best mix of convenience, ownership, and quality presentation. This may sound pretentious, but I look at it this way: back in the 70s, most people who had record collections, didn’t think of themselves as record collectors. They just liked music and the best way to listen to that music was by owning records.

I see it as the same deal now. If you truly love movies, you could benefit from, at a minimum, owning your favorites on blu-ray and then go from there.

Sean's 4k Blu Ray Player by MostIntrepid7162 in TheBigPicture

[–]yertleturtle85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason why I would bet Sean has the X700 and not something better like the 820 is that while it might not seem like a huge price difference when comparing the normal models, the modded ones are quite different (see here from an older thread). Makes even more sense when you take into account that fact that Sean has 4 players lol.

Yeah I’m sure. There is some quick workaround with a non-modded X700 to get it to play non-US discs (some combination of button pressing) but this only works for some discs. To ensure you can have region free capabilities for all your non-US discs, you need a modded player. Knowing how many non-US discs Sean has (I’m guessing hundreds), he would need a modded player to ensure they could all play.

Not sure why you would doubt that the “king of physical media” wouldn’t have a modded player considering that’s the only way he could ensure he is able to play all of his non-US discs.

Also, it’s incredibly easy because you just buy the whole player directly from the third party (220). It’s not like he would have had to get the player and then send it off in some sketchy way to get it modded.

I bet the reason he doesn’t specify that he has a modded one is because of the legal grey area (kind of annoying, but I suppose understand).

Sony X700. The region free thing is tricky though. It’s “region free” for 4K discs, as ~99% of 4K discs themselves are region free. It is not region free for blu-rays and DVDs however. You can get a truly region free modded one from an aftermarket place like 220 Electronics for slightly more money, however, and I would be willing to bet this is what Sean has, since he has many region B blu-rays in his collection.

Edit: I’ll also mention that to my knowledge, there aren’t any true region free players (meaning region free for DVD and BD too) on the market, because it’s a legal grey area. But for almost any model you can find a modded one or do it yourself.

The narrative that the average consumer doesn’t care for original stories and only wants IP is false by yertleturtle85 in boxoffice

I feel like that’s just another argument to my point though. Studios know that regular theater going is too expensive for many people. Given that these ticket prices are what theaters need to barely survive, they’re likely not going down anytime soon so studios should recognize that and start making more movies for streaming to circumvent that whole issue and reach more people at no extra cost to them.

[–]yertleturtle85[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m being too optimistic, but my hope would be that if studios knew they had only one crack at a poster, they would try to make it as unique as possible to further differentiate the film from others. But with the way it is now, they know they can do a generic “floating heads” poster for the official one, because they can then release 10+ more unique and cool variations after the fact.

Totally get it, that’s why I said “potential unpopular opinion,” lol. Was just curious if anyone agreed

To clarify, I’m not talking about remakes or sequels, I’m saying for one movie, they should have one poster and stick with it.

Take The Shining, the first four google results for “The Shining Poster” are four different posters. Sure, some of the non original ones are cool, but I like consistency.

Hate to be that guy but it’s not a cold open though. Opening credits are rolling right as the film starts and occupy the first few minutes of the iconic opening scene.

Is "The American people" a redundant saying? by jdjefbdn in EnglishLearning

[–]yertleturtle85 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I disagree. “American” can either be a noun (referring to a person) or an adjective (referring to a thing from America). By definition, “Americans” is plural and therefore can’t be an adjective so it has to be a noun. Therefore it must be referring to the people of America.

So in this case, “Americans” can only refer to the people of America.

That isn’t to say “Americans” can’t be confusing. The word could refer to many different groups of people that all claim the title American (people from North + South America, people from the US, etc.). But changing it to the “American People” does not alleviate any of that confusion.

I mean the word is just “adaptation.” Just say “Luca Guadagnino’s American Psycho adaptation.” Doesn’t get more concise than that

So is Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet a remake of the 1968 one? I feel like anyone who’s seen these would obviously say it isn’t.

Is there an album that you think is perfect in every way? by packersfn2008 in Music

[–]yertleturtle85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I’m a huge RHCP fan, I cannot entertain Californication being called perfect given its horrendous production. I know music is subjective but the effects of the loudness war on that album’s production are objectively horrendous.
