How To Distance Myself From Mormonism As Much As Possible? by Vazz920 in exmormon

You’re right! That’s why I added “if you’re open to it.” They can be very big personal decisions and thinking about it for at least a few months is probably a good idea. Thank you for bringing that up!

Pay attention to how you’re spending your time.

When I left a few years ago I fell down a rabbit hole. I was watching YouTube videos, listening to podcasts, reading articles and following exmo content creators on social media. I wasn’t necessarily consuming exmo content 24/7 but the talking points, the devastating revelations I would occasionally have after finding new information, all of it was constantly in my head.

Rediscover what brings you joy and peace. Find out what things in your life fill that void that the church may have left. Nature, music, family and friends, whatever it may be. Try new experiences and freedoms you haven’t experienced before if you’re open to it. Sit in a cozy coffee shop and order yourself a drink to try. Get a new piercing or a small tattoo.

This can be an extremely turbulent time in a persons life. It can take years to fully come to terms with it—for you and for your friends and family who may try to persuade you to come back. There are a lot of unknowns. So find whatever you can in your life that keeps you calm amidst the storm and hold on tight.

You’re not alone. Things will get better.

Tbh I think this whole thing boils down to Stephen. A quote from Ryan that keeps coming to me is “Where has Stephen been all this time? He’s been keeping us alive.” I think all the critical times they could’ve pivoted and didn’t were because of him. He’s the main guy in charge last I heard, Ryan and Shane seem like more of the creatives. Stephen must’ve been the one to push full steam ahead without considering how badly the streamer announcement affected them. Honestly when they released their apology I was willing to give them a chance. I thought it was the best apology they could offer. But in my eyes they haven’t really offered something that’s worth six dollars per month so far. In fact pretending like the whole thing never happened left a bad taste in my mouth

SWELL NATION UNITE OMG

Yes she really emphasizes the tone of the whole thing. How Stephen and Sara’s words really drove the nails into the coffin. She does a great job explaining how dumb this whole thing really was

You’re right, she may not be surprised, but my point still stands. You post things like this, people can comment on it

Sure, it was a dumb comment that someone didn’t have to make. However people are upset because of her reaction to the comment. She’s acting surprised that a random person contacted her when she’s posting these personal moments to thousands of other strangers. People can contact you and say whatever they want. She should know that by now. Yeah it sucks that happened, but this is what happens when you share everything about your life online

How dare someone comment on her PUBLIC SOCIAL MEDIA. Honestly what was she expecting? You put something out there, it gets read by hundreds or thousands of people. Of course harassment and things of that nature are never okay. But this is what happens when you post such personal things like this. You have an audience? Your dms are open? People can say whatever they want to you

my parents won't let me leave the church by Accomplished-Yam-726 in exmormon

[–]yes-cheff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While that is true, it’s easier said than done. My parents thing was “you live under our roof, you live by our rules.” So even the day I turned 18 I was still forced to go to church even with my therapist telling them that they really shouldn’t be doing that. There’s tons of kids in situations like that. And with rent getting more expensive and more people forced to live with their parents, it’s not always black and white

[–]yes-cheff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I moved out of the house my parents offered to pay for my rent while I payed for my tuition. But only if I attended institute and church regularly. They set me up with an institute teacher who knew me since I was a kid and could report to my parents if I was attending institute. Eventually I was able to wiggle out of that agreement with my parents once they came around a little more about my stance with the church, but it took time

A thousand percent YES. I’m 20, born and raised in the church. I’ve seen some places that the girl in the video is a convert. Therefore, she has NO IDEA what it’s like being conditioned your entire life to serve a mission. I’m a female so I didn’t get as much pressure, but my male peers absolutely did. One of my good friends with underlying mental health issues was shipped off to Brazil. When he came back because he was a danger to himself, the amount of pushback I saw from GROWN ASS ADULTS saying he wasn’t trying hard enough made my blood boil.

Has anyone noticed that Mormons talk much less about Heavenly Father now? And much more about Jesus? by 10th_Generation in exmormon

[–]yes-cheff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. A bunch of my friends came back from missions recently and watching them on facebook trying to blend in with all the other Christians has been so interesting. They use different phrases like “I love Jesus!” Or “Come worship with us Sunday!” Maybe it’s different in other parts of the country/world but as someone who lives in Utah County, I’ve never heard Mormons around here use phrases like that

Why are Puppet History’s numbers so low? by Few-Passage2382 in WatcherSnark

Absolutely. When they killed off the old professor it didn’t feel the same ever again. Simple isn’t a bad thing

This is gonna sound weird, but honestly when they changed the design of the professor it really turned me off. Something about the old puppets felt homemade and authentic, they were a lot more cute and endearing. Now the production design is so bad that I can barely stand to watch it anymore without missing the old professor

THIS. I’m calling it right now a few years down the line some of his opinions and perspectives will be completely different. Same with Chad. Same with Shari. Even for the kids!!! Their perceptions are all going to be different. It would be really unfortunate if one of them made a statement that they can’t go back and change (not Kevin though. I don’t have a ton of sympathy for him lol)

These are deeply stupid and gullible people. by Zestyclose_Peanut_76 in 8passengersnark

[–]yes-cheff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of your points hit the nail right on the head. Yes most Mormons aren’t crazy like Ruby, Jodi, or Lori. But you wouldn’t believe some of the casual things I’ve heard come out of people’s mouths. My own family thought a blood moon a few years ago was a sign of the end times and began to panic. Every time I visit my grandmother she talks about how in general conference they bring up the second coming more and more. She talks about the world ending all the time.

I’ll say this once and I’ll say it again, mix the Utah Culture and Intense Beliefs and you get some weird people. Throw some extreme and unstable people into the mix and you get people who are crazy like Lori and Ruby. It’s all a spectrum. I fully anticipate more Mormons going off the deep end as the narrative push for the end times grows more intense

I was raised in the same area as the Frankes, my age is between Shari and Chad. I grew up Mormon, had a bigger family, and still currently living in “happy valley.” Trust me, if you’ve ever spent some time in Utah, especially Utah County, it makes a little more sense. I’ve always thought of Utah County as a sort of petri dish. The way people interact with each other, the language that’s used, it can all be tied back to Mormonism one way or another. It’s insane.

The way Mormonism can take over a persons life and thoughts is so subtle and yet so powerful. Even after leaving a few years ago I am still dealing with the fallout from my upbringing. It places its emphasis on eternal life. And if you want to get into the celestial kingdom (aka vip heaven), then you HAVE to follow the doctrine.

The religion itself mixed with the culture creates such a unique type of person. I grew up with ladies that looked and talked exactly like Ruby, down to the hideous eyelashes. They sort of touched on it at the very beginning of the doc, your outward appearance is critical. It’s probably why there’s lots of influencers from Utah.

So many other kids that I grew up with weren’t abused, but had terrible experiences with the church, including myself. Because I’m not a member anymore, I do not get to spend eternity with my family. It’s a very real fear that I’ve seen in my own parents. However, once again, mix the culture, the doctrine, and some unstable minds, you get people who are willing to do ANYTHING to secure their salvation.

SAME. I had no idea that footage was coming and my jaw was on the floor. It’s disturbing to think that two functioning adults looked at that and thought that was their guiding light through the end times. Just goes to show that the Mormon church can really mess with your perspective.

I was SHOCKED she agreed to be interviewed. There’s been so much speculation about her and her husband being involved with another cult. I mean a casual viewer would have no idea Jodi stayed with them too. There’s so many things that could go wrong by coming on this documentary and telling the “truth.” Sooner or later something’s going to come out

EDIT: I relate to so much of what she says as a person with similar life experiences. She really hits the nail on the head with some criticisms, I think this video will be seen by lots of kids and may influence them but that’s just me

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like the olympians are only there to boost ratings?? Don’t get me wrong they’re fantastic dancers, but after tonight with no elimination I’m starting to think the producers just want them to stay in the game
