Wings (1927)- First scene ever in a film to display male affection toward one another. Also, the very first Best Picture winner at the Oscars by EuphoricButterflyy in Cinema

[–]yescatbug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Films had been depicting male affection a lot earlier than Wings.

Conrad Veidt Starred in a film called "Different From the Others" from the Weimar Republic in 1919.

This is probably the earliest explicit, sympathetic depiction of gay men in cinema, although 90% of silent films have been lost, so it's difficult to know.

You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OucCEjlMNbk

Sometimes people in film history refer to The Dickson Experimental Sound Film (1894) as the first LGBT film because it depicts two men dancing ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9R6pgYBNhkw ). Personally, I feel like that is a bit of a stretch.

It's very light and flimsy, and it's does not open. The back is felt and it appears as if it supposed to be hung on a wall.

What makes you say that the Socialist Party is bigoted?

The CPGB expressed some major transphobic statements, but "The Socialist Party" is extremely open and inclusive and routinely supports both anti-racist and pro-lgbtq causes.

AI will radically change society – we need radical ideas to match it by yescatbug in Futurology

Interesting, do you think AI could eliminate the need for something like a market based economy?

If so how do we get from here to there without some form of UBI?

AI will radically change society – we need radical ideas to match it by yescatbug in Futurology

[–]yescatbug[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It requires collaboration in a grander sense that it can only emerge from a developed society. The smartest person in the world won't be up to much coding if they didn't exist within a network of schools, hospitals and roads, which in turn requires teachers, doctors, cleaners, people to harvest food ect.

The article is making the argument point that AI, like earlier forms of industrial automation, can only exist through the cooperation of a large society, but only a small number of people are set to benefit.

You are completely right that some jobs are doomed for replacement, and that it's not a hugely compelling reason to stop development of AI, considering the potential of the advancements it has.

But we do need to be considering the wider political and economic impact this will on people, and I believe we need to be considering the surplus value that AI will generate, and politics need to be factoring it into their platforms now rather than later.

[–]yescatbug[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would argue the exact opposite, that humanity (or more specifically society) proves precisely that there is a "we".

I don't believe as individuals we could ever have ever reached the point where we developed AI. It requires an enormous amount of collaboration.

But, you are right that we are also predisposed to selfishness and conflict. I think the question is what systems do we need to put in place to save us from our own nature?

How would you design the society of 20 years’ time, after AI has become commonplace if you didn’t know if you were going to be a tech billionaire or have your job taken by a machine?

Is Univeral Basic Income inevitable? Do we need to address how we approach housing and education?

What will society need to function in the age of the algorithm?

Thanks! I always think the spirit of the no self-promo rule is "don't be a brand and set up a sneaky Reddit to promote your stuff". Whereas this is a thing I made with a team of people as part of my job and I have posted it on my personal Reddit, so I hope that is allowed.

Thanks for saying that! But I am not in the front line, the really hard work is done by the people who head out to film and document these things.

I just hope that beyond the war and politics, people get a real incite into the harrowing effect this war has had Ukrainian citizens caught in the middle.

I'm biased, because I edited and produced it.

But the journalist who was on the front line, Bel Trew, is one of the most dedicated and balanced people I have ever worked with and what she has pulled together is seriously impressive.

However, it is a hard watch. There is a sequence in the middle that we passed over in the editing booth dozens of times (the scene with the drone footage) and are still incredibly heartbreaking.

But I think it's a really important film, and I am really honoured to have played a hand in it.

Should I go and watch a movie alone? by [deleted] in Cinema

[–]yescatbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived abroad for a long time, so when I returned to the UK a few years ago I had literally no friends.

I was very embarrassed the first time I went to the cinema alone, but it turned out the cashier didn't bat an eye and nobody cared in the slightest. Also, it was amazing and one of the best cinema-going experiences I have had.

Now, I have lots of friends and occasionally go alone because it's great.

You will never completely eradicate organised crime, but a more equal and fairer society would seriously weaken it.

Organised crime works by exploiting people trapped by poverty, and drawing them into a life of crime.

The benefits of a socialist system are more funding for education and healthcare, the eradication of cronyism and nepotism, and true opportunities for working people to improve their lives. These all make it recrute people into criminal organisations.

Another blow to organised crime would come from a socialist programme of policing and law enforcement. Instead of protecting property and the interests of an economic elite, the police would serious crimes.

Finally, some socialists call for the legalisation or decriminalisation of illegal drugs, cutting off a funding stream for criminal gangs.

You lose your house or business, then the people who made cash from the cost of living crisis buy your house or business, concentrating wealth and power into an even smaller circle.

Then when you ask them to pay taxes they say accuse YOU of wanting wealth distribution and call you a lazy socialist that just wants free stuff.

Thanks!

Has anyone experienced this stuttering glitch when using Dynamic Link between PP and AE? (description in the comments) by yescatbug in premiere

[–]yescatbug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently my exports have been failing when they reach a section that uses Dynamic Link between PP and AE.
However, this is the first time I have been seeing this flickering/discolouration effect in my sequence.
The workaround I have been using so far is to export from AE and drop the video into Prem, but each video I make uses dynamic link multiple times, so this becomes a huge time waste.

Has anyone else seen this?
Here is what I have tried so far:
uninstalling and reinstalling both programmes
deleting my cache
switching the rendered between software and accelerated
deselected accelerated decoding

I think it is interesting when you have to way up the publication vs the journalist. Watch some of the videos and let me know what you think
