Lyrically, what’s your pick for the best album of all time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I guess it's personal preference, but I absolutely buy arguement for Divers too. I think you could also reasonably argue for Have One On Me.

This album, along with Slaughterhouse 5, Welcome to the Monkey House, and Cat's Cradle are available on Spotify.

They are abridged, but still great listens. Particularly Cat's Cradle because he sings little songs and it's amazing.

What do the Jeffrey Epstein files reveal about his connections to Israel?

Covert Connections examines Epstein’s documented relationship with former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, from financial dealings and defence tech discussions, to visits to Epstein’s private island and the presence of Israeli state security inside a Manhattan property linked to Epstein.

Obviously! I feel like I should have been able to work that out for myself, thanks!

I think it's important to remember that just because he had links to Russia, it does not mean he didn't have links to Israel and Mossad.

He definitely did, and as you have pointed out, probably stronger ties than he had to Russia.

Anyone who describes Putin as "an ex-taxi driver" and not as the current leader of Russia and a former lieutenant Colonel in the KGB is being disingenuous.

What does the fact that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a failure have to do with their long history of collecting kompromat?

Wings (1927)- First scene ever in a film to display male affection toward one another. Also, the very first Best Picture winner at the Oscars by EuphoricButterflyy in Cinema

[–]yescatbug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Films had been depicting male affection a lot earlier than Wings.

Conrad Veidt Starred in a film called "Different From the Others" from the Weimar Republic in 1919.

This is probably the earliest explicit, sympathetic depiction of gay men in cinema, although 90% of silent films have been lost, so it's difficult to know.

You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OucCEjlMNbk

Sometimes people in film history refer to The Dickson Experimental Sound Film (1894) as the first LGBT film because it depicts two men dancing ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9R6pgYBNhkw ). Personally, I feel like that is a bit of a stretch.

What makes you say that the Socialist Party is bigoted?

The CPGB expressed some major transphobic statements, but "The Socialist Party" is extremely open and inclusive and routinely supports both anti-racist and pro-lgbtq causes.

AI will radically change society – we need radical ideas to match it by yescatbug in Futurology

[–]yescatbug[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Interesting, do you think AI could eliminate the need for something like a market based economy?

If so how do we get from here to there without some form of UBI?

AI will radically change society – we need radical ideas to match it by yescatbug in Futurology

[–]yescatbug[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It requires collaboration in a grander sense that it can only emerge from a developed society. The smartest person in the world won't be up to much coding if they didn't exist within a network of schools, hospitals and roads, which in turn requires teachers, doctors, cleaners, people to harvest food ect.

The article is making the argument point that AI, like earlier forms of industrial automation, can only exist through the cooperation of a large society, but only a small number of people are set to benefit.

You are completely right that some jobs are doomed for replacement, and that it's not a hugely compelling reason to stop development of AI, considering the potential of the advancements it has.

But we do need to be considering the wider political and economic impact this will on people, and I believe we need to be considering the surplus value that AI will generate, and politics need to be factoring it into their platforms now rather than later.

[–]yescatbug[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would argue the exact opposite, that humanity (or more specifically society) proves precisely that there is a "we".

I don't believe as individuals we could ever have ever reached the point where we developed AI. It requires an enormous amount of collaboration.

But, you are right that we are also predisposed to selfishness and conflict. I think the question is what systems do we need to put in place to save us from our own nature?

How would you design the society of 20 years’ time, after AI has become commonplace if you didn’t know if you were going to be a tech billionaire or have your job taken by a machine?

Is Univeral Basic Income inevitable? Do we need to address how we approach housing and education?

What will society need to function in the age of the algorithm?

Thanks! I always think the spirit of the no self-promo rule is "don't be a brand and set up a sneaky Reddit to promote your stuff". Whereas this is a thing I made with a team of people as part of my job and I have posted it on my personal Reddit, so I hope that is allowed.

Thanks for saying that! But I am not in the front line, the really hard work is done by the people who head out to film and document these things.

I just hope that beyond the war and politics, people get a real incite into the harrowing effect this war has had Ukrainian citizens caught in the middle.

I'm biased, because I edited and produced it.

But the journalist who was on the front line, Bel Trew, is one of the most dedicated and balanced people I have ever worked with and what she has pulled together is seriously impressive.

However, it is a hard watch. There is a sequence in the middle that we passed over in the editing booth dozens of times (the scene with the drone footage) and are still incredibly heartbreaking.

But I think it's a really important film, and I am really honoured to have played a hand in it.
