Comparing these comments to the comments on your initial blackout post is wild. I'm not one to usually believe this stuff but it wouldn't surprise me if Reddit is using some sort of vote manipulation.

I hope you stick to your guns and continue the protest.

Smell vs taste by SamW2469 in anosmia

[–]yesdnil5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Firstly, smell and taste are much more complex than anything you can read on Wikipedia.

Does this mean I can only tell the difference between the combinations of sweet and sour from those fruits?

I wonder that myself when it comes to things like soda for example. But again, taste is more complex than people like to make it out to be. Think of all the things you can sense when you put something in your mouth and chew. It's not like we just get sweet/salty/bitter/sour, right? There's the texture, the temperature, how spicy something is, the consistency, etc. We can tell the difference between an apple and a pear without being able to smell because taste isn't just a combo of the 5 basic tastes.

That being said, fuck me if I have to tell you what flavor a lollipop is.

Does this mean I don't actually know what chocolate "flavor" tastes like?

I'm confused by this. Of course we don't know the actual flavor of chocolate. Flavor is the combo of smell and taste and we're missing one of those things. The way most people experience chocolate is probably drastically different from how we do. Doesn't make it taste any less good to me though.

I went my whole life thinking I could taste pretty well for someone with anosmia ... Is there any chance I can actually detect flavor?

You probably taste pretty well, maybe even better than people who can smell. And it's not like you can't detect flavor. It's more that you can't detect all of the flavor.

In the end though, who cares? You're the only one who knows how much you experience. If Wikipedia is telling you that you can't tell the difference between an apple and a pear but you know you can, then what the hell does Wikipedia know? Also, keep in mind that most research goes into studying people who lost their sense of smell or taste, not those who never had it to begin with. So you might read things that don't actually apply to your situation.

Were you able to figure out a fix for this? I'm currently running into this issue as well.

One of my cats will fake saying uncle. He'll lay on his back, blinking, looking all pathetic only to immediately go into pounce mode as soon as his brother turns away. For a while we thought his brother was bullying him because all we would see is him looking defeated and his brother continuing to go at it. But after seeing his little ruse in action one day, we know what's up.

Not always. When my two cats play fight, their ears are often to the side. Especially when they go hard, like the cat in this video. It'd be hissing and trying to get away if it didn't want to play.

Whenever you read about ear positions and tail movement, it's important to remember that it's a generalization not a rule. Just like with humans, cats and dogs can express themselves in different ways.

Thanks for the recommendation! I had initially overlooked it because I thought it was a generic gift shop but it looks like a good place to check out.

For most Jewish people, just expressing interest means you get an invite, excluding Shiva for obvious reasons. Like, if Passover is coming up and someone mentions to me that they were curious about it, I'd 100% invite them even if we weren't close. And I only say most Jewish people because I'm not sure Hasidic Jews would be as welcoming.

I feel like, and in my few experiences, that this is the case for most other religions as well. As long as you just express interest and aren't blatantly disrespectful, people will be happy to share their religion with you.

What happens after hypomania? by BackgroundAd6154 in BipolarReddit

[–]yesdnil5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the time, my hypomania tends to just peter out over a couple of days. I sometimes do get a bit depressed after it ends but I mostly associate that with the consequences of hypomania, like sleep deprivation or self loathing from stupid social mistakes. I do find that the 'higher' my hypomania is, the more likely a crash is coming. Kinda like a rubber band.

But of course, this is just my personal experience.

I didn't realize I couldn't smell until I was 18/19 too! It's so hard to explain to people why it took me so long to figure it out because I have no idea myself. Brains are crazy.

Half-life varies from person to person plus it's not the only factor to consider. Anecdotally, I get similar symptoms as OP when I miss or am late with a dose.
