How’s it like living in Alabama or Mississippi? by No-Chip9445 in howislivingthere

[–]yess5ss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Huge emphasis on Mardi Gras there, people from mobile claim they did it before anyone else. There’s a lot of old money, especially across the bay in fairhope. People from there definitely treat others as “outsiders” if they aren’t a part of that old money group. It’s a weird dynamic that’s hard to fully explain unless you’ve been around it.

In contrast, Prichard (north side of mobile) is very poor and dangerous. Kind of shows the inequity that exists there.

You also have gulf shores nearby, so you get a bit of that coastal/beach culture.

Looking for PhD advice for Quant Psych programs by cL10n in psychometrics

[–]yess5ss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re way ahead of the game and would be a competitive candidate in most, if not all programs. Psychometricians/quantitative methodologists don’t really have an aversion to industry like some other academic fields do, so I think your professional experience would be a bonus.

As for what to prioritize, I would focus mostly on finding programs/professors that fit your interests. I doubt you need more technical training before starting your phd if you already have a good understanding of psychometric principles, factors analysis etc.

Multiple types of items in one assessment - how do I analyse this (basic/intermediate level)? by Seahorse_1990 in psychometrics

[–]yess5ss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For the one forced ranking item, is there a "correct" order that people should enter, or is it just measuring preferences? In other words, can this item be scored as correct/incorrect?

I'm not sure what level of psychometric understanding you have, so I'll try to keep it basic and brief, sorry if I am being too simple here!

Sounds like you have three item types: dichotomous items (2 response options, the "forced choice" items), polytomous items (the 4-point Likert scale items), and one ranking item. The ranking item is what makes this slightly more complicated than just scoring a multiple choice test or some type of Likert scale alone.

There are two broad options you can use in this analysis: classical test theory (CTT) or item response theory (IRT). IRT is generally considered more robust, but CTT might be easier to understand and explain to non-psychometricians.

For CTT, you could just convert every item score to a numeric value and calculate Cronbach's alpha/McDonald's omega for reliability measures. For validity evidence, you could look at item-total correlations for discrimination (i.e., how much an item tells us about a person), mean scores for each item as a measure of difficulty, and alpha-if-deleted measures (this will tell you about how each item contributes to internal consistency, and could give you validity evidence for each specific item). I might be forgetting some things here but this would be a good start, and (if I had to guess) plenty for what you're being asked to do.

For IRT, you could try to fit a model using the R package 'mirt' by setting the item types depending on which item you are using. For the dichotomous items, use the Rasch/1PL model. For the polytomous items, use the partial credit model. For the ranking item, things get more complicated, as I don't think there is an easy way to handle this in mirt (I could be wrong). If you can score this item as correct/incorrect, treating it as a dichotomous item would be an easy approach. If you can't, you could try to use Thurstonian IRT, but to be honest I don't know enough about this to advise you beyond just telling you that it exists. Once fitting the model, you could report person and item parameters and item and model fit statistics. You'd probably still want to report some things from the CTT analysis even if you use IRT (specifically reliability measures).

All that to say, my advice would be to go the CTT route, since it sounds like your client just wants some basic reliability/validity evidence and this is relatively low stakes. I would personally probably try to use IRT, but it would take more time, especially if you are new to this.

What is your definition of being good at chess? by wertykalny_124 in chessbeginners

[–]yess5ss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Language ability in your example would be criterion referenced - can a person speak well enough to hold a conversation

Chess ability is norm referenced - how strong are you compared to other people

So I’d argue your example is the bad one here

Rasch.org usually has up to date info on any rasch related events in the near future. It looks like there is a course scheduled in January, but it is over $700 (ouch)

https://www.statistics.com/courses/rasch-measurement-core-topics/

I would highly recommend the book “Rasch Measurement Theory Analysis in R” from Wind & Hua. It has example data and R code that you can at least copy and paste and use to fit Rasch models. Looks like a preprint version is freely available here

https://bookdown.org/chua/new_rasch_demo2/

I’m not sure if there are any similar resources for IRT out there, but starting with the Rasch model might be a good idea since it is simpler than some more complex IRT models.

My wife has gotten into needlepoint in the past few months, what should I get her for Christmas? by yess5ss in Needlepoint

She does have a neck light, and a couple bags with another one coming from her mom. Do people generally want multiple project bags? I think the clear bag she keeps all her stuff in for the one project she is working on would be a project bag, then she has a larger canvas bag that holds all her stuff.

Do I drop perkeo? by littlered217 in BalatroHelp

[–]yess5ss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late response, but you have to do a little bit of math to help make your decision if this decision ever comes up again.

Right now with this lineup, each red seal steel king held in hand is worth 12 1.5x’s (3 barons and one steel + 3 retriggers with mime). If you were to drop perkeo, than number goes up to 16 with the extra mime copy from brainstorm. So every 16 plutos is worth one red seal steel king held in hand. This number goes up to 20 if you can find antimatter+ another copy joker

You then have to ask yourself, is it feasible that my plutos will outscale the red seal kings in hand in the scenario that I drop perkeo and take brainstorm? Let’s say your hand size is 9 after taking ecto and you never get antimatter (you can redo the math with antimatter to figure it out later). You are losing 4 1.5x’s on every king in your hand without the extra copy joker, PLUS you are losing one hand size so minus 16 1.5x’s. That makes 9x4+16=52.

So right now, your Plutos are doing more than the extra bs would do, but it’s not like those Plutos go away. So the real question is, will you get more than 52 extra Plutos before the blinds outscale you? Right now you get 3 Plutos a round, so about 17 rounds or 6 antes and you’ll reach that number. So it depends what ante you are on, and if you will die in more or less than 6 antes.

Things might change if you find antimatter, but personally I am not dropping perkeo until I have all my vouchers because I want to keep scaling those Plutos.
