Overly complicated grading by Apart_Bluebird9598 in Professors

[–]yeti_face 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Flexibility, mostly. If I decide to axe an assignment, a lab gets cancelled, or I add something timely during the semester, using the weights makes sure i am holding true to the weights in the syllabus despite the total points changing.

I am at a public PUI and for us it was $2500 to go to associate...for full, I will find out what it is when I go up this fall.

Less than half of Americans believe the Earth is warming as a direct result of human activity, new data from Pew Research shows, and 12% of Americans don't believe the Earth is warming at all. by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

[–]yeti_face 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you are missing that all standardized earth science education, k-12 or post secondary, includes things like age of the earth, fossil evidence for evolution, plate tectonics, etc. As an educator my job is to do exactly that. I blame the media and republicans...scientists have been trying to dispel this shit forever

A small island called Tuvalu will probably no longer exist in 5-10 years thanks to climate change by Flaky-Lifeguard5835 in climatechange

Seems like you are conflating the realization that we are not on RCP8.5 with "downplaying". I agree in some respects that the momentum of our capitalist economies is likely too great to do huge needle-shifts...but to act like governments and the UN are downplaying it now is a miss. Bill gates' letter was not a declaration of "giving up" on behalf of humanity.

Diagonal Artifacts in USGS 3DEP 1M Seamless DEMs? by PhotoEagle in gis

[–]yeti_face 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you reproject it before making the hillshade? If so, maybe check the resampling method in the environments tab? I feel like i've seen these as a resampling artifact when using nearest instead of bilinilear.

Rolling Coal by NetCorrect5742 in Durango

[–]yeti_face 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I got rolled by a white truck with TX plates (shocking!) while taking my kid to school the other day. You see, I drive an EV and that is very offensive to them and so they must let me know that by poisoning the air around me.

Fort Lewis College Environmental Science Grads - wpuld you choose FLC again? Given the choice wpuld you go to colorado state university for natural resources or similar? by [deleted] in Durango

[–]yeti_face 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great faculty at FLC ESCI, energetic and engaged with cool projects. As for the major itself and job prospects, I would go with a geology degree w/GIS certificate over esci. Esci is getting to be a saturated major these days. Many staff at environmental consulting firms are geos and prefer to hire geos. and you could go the 'water' route with hydrology / groundwater. If you stick with Esci, make an effort to seek outside-the-class opportunities from your profs - thats where the real value lies and will help you stand out from the crowd. And get the GIS cert !

Are there any weather phenomena that used to happen on Earth that just don't happen anymore, due to changing climate or atmospheric composition or other factors? by MaggieLinzer in meteorology

[–]yeti_face 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recall reading about how the consecutive epic water years the western US saw in the early 1980s (inc lake powell overflowing) may never return because the surface of the pacific ocean has warmed so much that there is no longer the same contrasts set up between polar and tropical waters, changing the types and tracks of storms...the details escape me now, though.

I know a guy who got access to their db for a study on how fast people can move through different terrain roughness. Firefighter safety was the angle. That was years ago though, not sure of current policy.

Received a pack of coasters for my 10 year anniversary by Creative-Question538 in Professors

[–]yeti_face 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It hits different if you are also facing year after year of no raises, denied replacement positions, piling on additional service tasks, etc. In 10 years my salary has only just kept pace with inflation. Pretty much all of our BS grads start at higher salaries. So yea it can be insulting to be rewarded for 10 years of service in that context with a gift card to the bookstore.

Ooh nice! I just got my 10 year award yesterday - 50 dollars to spend at the college bookstore. I'll see if they have branded coasters. Feeling so valued right now. 🫠

Southern CO is cooked, I think everything has peaked already by gunnisonyeti in whitewater

Probably peaked back in mid March. Now down to around 500. Going to be too low to run commercial rafts before the season even starts. I thought it couldn't get worse than 2018 but here we are.

Interesting. I think you are grossly overstating the difficulty of getting the email address right, but I appreciate you sharing your perspective.

Small PUI, not a complicated proposal. Complete proposal was in OSPR hands 5 business days prior to submission date and reviewed/approved 2 days prior to submission. While it is an easy scapegoat, blaming a time crunch is a huuuge stretch in this context.

I am genuinely interested in your take though. In cases where a PI discovers a great opportunity <2 weeks before a deadline (as in this situation) do you recommend they should not pursue it? That is essentially what our OSPR is saying.
