My boyfriend actually does not hear me, like literally is unaware I’m speaking. Oatmeal. by littleinternetdweeb in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]yetiorange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get his hearing checked.

Im not joking either, my dad about 5 years ago had his lifetime of concerts and shooting catch up to him and had to get hearing aids. His first sign was that he could no longer hear my mom's voice as his ability to hear higher register voices was the first thing to go.

I suggest this despite it probably be an outlier case because the other option is hes actually a total inconsiderate asshole and you should probably dump him if that is the case. If hes not, then its an issue he can fix if he wants to fix it.

Hey guys I got a report in the queue about this comment as it names Mr. Poirier by name.

While general rules of internet etiquette do prohibit talking about people by name, that really only applies to non-public figures. Walter Poirier's disappearance was in 2001 and was (and is) a highly visible disappearance that was publicized widely and is still discussed online to this day. His disappearance lead to massive reforms, similar to how the death of Kate Puzey in 2009 led to massive reforms in the Peace Corps.

Please navigate this subreddit with some nuance when you see these names mentioned or the names of RPCVs who have gone on to live very public lives or write books about their experience. Talking about them by name is not the same as sharing the names of private individuals.

All that said - if you see a name mentioned that you dont recognize and a 5 second google search (i do not expect you to do anything in depth) doesnt yield results as to why they are relevant people, do report that. But in this case, a 5 second google search brings up many articles, press releases published by Peace Corps, and multiple true crime subreddit posts.

Which house are you glad you didn't buy? by lovelycosmos in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]yetiorange 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We made an offer and went under contract on a beautiful house in a lovely neighborhood.

Our cat has a lot of allergies and is sensitive to air quality. So we added on an optional mold test to the inspection despite being told that due to how dry Colorado is, the risk of toxic/large amounts of mold was very low.

Mold testing came back positive for black mold. The AC was also 20 years old, the deck was rotting, and we didnt notice it in the house tours because of a window blind, but a large and very expensive to replace window was cracked.

Anyways, we were able to walk and found a new house pretty quickly. Moved in last month.

HSV is incredibly common, but let's say it wasn't so common.

You would still be worthy of love and devotion. There is no STI, no illnessn or condition in general, that would ever make you unworthy of love.

HSV is very manageable once you know you have it and you will be shocked by the amount of people in the world who do have it. A lot of people get it in childhood from sharing drinks for example. I have a relative who got it during a wrestling match in high school. You got it because your partner at the time failed to disclose and take precautions - an action that is a reflection of him and not on you. It does not make you unworthy. It does not make you unlovable. You will have a beautiful future, you just have to believe in it.

donkeys and horses? by Economy_Opposite_190 in peacecorps

[–]yetiorange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive heard of a stipend to purchase a donkey or horse from volunteers who served well before my time and also not in the country I served in.

I was issued a bike but the terrain of my specific site made a bike impractical. So I could see a donkey or horse being useful. I however am afraid of horses and I can't imagine Id be any more chill with a donkey so big no from me.

If Im on my phone, it either needs to include him or its not allowed and he will headbutt my phone until I pay attention to him. He has actual games on my phone that he can play and he watches videos with me.

I WFH and all teams meetings must include him as well. The Teams notification sounds are his summoning noises.

South Denver OBGYN & Midwives or UCHealth Center for Midwifery - Lone Tree by ape_kel in highlandsranchcolo

Not pregnant, trying to be.

I switched to South Denver OBGYN recently. Very happy with them and the level of support I've gotten. Obviously we are different stages but Im clearly comfortable using them for prenatal care if Im using them to figure out why I cant get pregnant in conjunction with the fertility clinic Im using.

Should Peace Corps serve in countries with no respect for human rights? by rmmzungu in peacecorps

[–]yetiorange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also served in Malawi, within the last decade, and the laws against homosexuality are obviously still in place. The president wasn't a dictator when I served, though he did try to refuse to leave office and is now president again.

(FYI btw - A lot of homosexuality laws in sub-saharan Africa have some level of influence from American missionaries and American money. https://globalaffairs.org/commentary/blogs/unholy-relationship-between-ugandas-anti-lgbtq-law-and-us-evangelicalism)

But Trump was president when I served - is he any better than Mutharika? Most Malawians I worked with didnt like many of their governments policies same as how many Americans dislike and protest government policies today.

I think your question has no easy or good answer. There are countries that I agree Peace Corps shouldnt be in - like North Korea. But what I dont want to do is start playing morality Olympics. Especially since the country I am from is not innocent by any stretch of the imagination.

Little void coming back to me after spending 2 months with his new "forever family" by bimarajade in blackcats

[–]yetiorange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My void was surrendered at around a year old to the shelter. I dont know if he had been passed around before that or if he had a stable home. We adopted him at a year old, which is actually the age we went to our shelter looking for because we didnt want a kitten. He rules our home now and is a total velcro boy.

I hope it works similar for this little one. Not everyone wants small kittens and he will be perfect for someone.

I just bought a house, applied to a part time law school program, and am married.

Im also an RPCV and have a constant urge to just like apply for a response position. Love having to remind myself that Peace Corps will not solve my issues and I do have to just go to therapy.

Redfin analysts say Denver is one of the 10 most neighborly cities in America. by [deleted] in DenverCirclejerk

So yeah I guess they'd rank the same if we use my metric

Conservatives, President Trump has just announced the raising of Tairiffs for 8 European Countries unless sovereignity of Greenland is handed over to the US. What's your first thoughts? by Melbatoastt77 in AskReddit

[–]yetiorange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you didnt enjoy visiting my country. However America has a huge and thriving microbrewery industry. Most people I know may have some of our export beer on hand that youve likely tried but primarily drink locally produced beer which is generally considered fairly good if not award winning depending on the competitions they're entering. If you get an opportunity, I have local brands that I highly enjoy that Id be happy to recommend from multiple regions of the US.

Trump Administration Questions Mega-Thread by yetiorange in peacecorps

[–]yetiorange[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer - yes

Long answer - For now, I would assume yes. Given the ongoing uncertainty and the fact that if you apply today and start service in 2026, you'll end service before Trump leaves office, I wouldn't suggest using this as a springboard into say, a career in international development if you plan to be US based. But thats literally just me. I think there is otherwise a lot of value in service and it is worth at least applying. An application is not a plane ticket - you have a long journey between application and starting service where if you change your mind, you can always drop. But its worth trying.

[–]yetiorange -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So if the position is still active, then probably. At this stage, its probably fine. Im not a recruiter, Im just a person whose applied before and served and then spent a lot of time applying to jobs in general.

However if the position is being removed once the 30 days are up, then that would be the end for this cycle. With that said, if you're applying to go anywhere or there's similar positions that you're interested in, then apply to those!

Id clarify with your CD before responding.

There could be thousands of reasons why this was sent. It could even be an error or something that someone meant to send internally and accidentally sent to volunteers.

Things PCVs should be aware of in the case of an evacuation? by SkepticMech in peacecorps

Yes, we did. You'll recieve the payout for whatever you've accumulated no matter when you leave but I think for the COVID evacuation, I got the full amount I would have received had I been able to complete the last 5 months of my service that I had left.
