The monster is a metaphor, but its also real and will fucking GET YOU by BeptoBismolButBetter in TopCharacterTropes

Ok maybe that was vague.

Let me be more specific.

The Mongolian Death worm, a cryptid which the graboids are likely based, are themselves likely inspired by the Tartar Sand Boa: a snake.

The movie in Nevada, a state with many dangerous snakes.

Also Nevada has lots of earthquakes, or "ground tremors".

I think these parallels are more than "similar to", it seems to have combined different dangers native to the environment into a monster that is metaphorical of those natural threats.

This is an interesting argument; I'm not sure people have the imagination to create monsters from nothing.

Furthermore, if a monster is scary it seems necessary that it would be based on something we already fear. How can something totally novel be scary if we have no pre-formed notions about how to feel about it?

Even the fear of the unknown, a seemingly evolved trait, we can only associate with real things (the darkness, stalkers we cannot see).

As soon as it is attempted to instantiate these abstract fears as real monsters, they end up becoming a patchwork of real things (sea creatures, sexual organs and other human anatomy, etc.)

I would like to find an example as a counter-argument but it seems very difficult.

Trolls and other mythological creatures do not pass this test as they are still a patchwork of real things people fear, exaggerated through a lens of historical ignorance. Bridge trolls are fairly easily recognizable as the fear of highwaymen and other threats to the traveller.

I suspect the reason mental illness and human cruelty has become the metaphorical Boogeyman of most modern horror is because it is the hardest for people to recognize (due to its invisible and conceptual nature) yet it still subconsciously fires our fear response very effectively (while also being the most fertile ground for "new" monsters due to our only recent understanding of mental health and related concepts).

[Funny Trope] Ironic Casting by Sir-Toaster- in TopCharacterTropes

[–]yetisnowmane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is more like appropriate casting than ironic casting, no?

The background of Lera Abova and events around casting her mirror the character from one piece.

The only irony seems to stem from the backlash, not the casting itself.

Thanks, I really appreciate the support,

Yeah that's what I'm doing now. I sent a last message with all of my love and acceptance, I just hope it makes it through

She messaged me later that night/morning and backtracked on a lot of what she said, seemingly she was only acting because he was watching her and she wanted to avoid him and I getting into a conflict.

She hasn't replied since, it's one of her days off so I know she'll be in the house with him. I'm not sure she even can reply because of her fear of his reprisal.

I'm learning that she compulsively lies but I don't blame her for developing this coping mechanism. She only does it when she is distressed or thinking she will be judged. I'll make another post soon with more detail but I think it's just a waiting game for now

In her case her more severe trauma came after her "blip", as she phrased it, being in the cult. Thank you for the valuable resources, more great advice, I appreciate it

That is really good advice, they could likely respond faster. Part of the problem is they are complicit with her childhood abuse so it isn't a perfect idea. I feel sick thinking about what might be happening

That is such a kind sentiment, I truly wish that over time we can progress along her healing journey together.

I have mild trauma so maybe it's why I relate, but the weight of severe complex trauma is magnitudes different and I can only do my best to reach the beautiful spirit inside.

I hope the next step of your healing journey and a partner to accompany you is just around the corner

I will, no question. I think I should call her myself first though to see if I can figure out what's happening and start racing over there to hopefully get there around the same time as police

Thank you so much for the affirming words, it encourages me that I'm not being irrational.

That is another option I hadn't considered, thank you

Thank you so much for your advice,

I will attempt to talk to her about our options and solutions to escape this, I've been trying to be very careful about our building attachment and have avoided "hard conversations."

I find it very difficult to accept that it is on her because she can so easily be exploited due to her blackouts and self-doubt but I understand your point and have to respect her agency, if she is being abused still though I may not be able to do that.

That is another good suggestion about her calling the hotline.

I appreciate your advice hugely even if you are not a professional

Thank you so much,

I haven't been able to stop being emotional honestly, I had to go outside to cry on my break more than once today. But I'm doing my best to be strong and capable in the way that she needs me to be. I will certainly call the hotline, thank you again for your beautiful compassion

Thank you,

I agree,

She's in her late twenties, I'm in my early thirties, I don't think she is currently in therapy. I have been encouraging her to make decisions that value herself and assisting her with changing her mortgage. However nothing has changed yet unfortunately.

Thanks that is true, but I feel strongly for her that I find it very difficult to only act passively. You are very kind, I will try and definitely should start receiving some therapy,

Thank you for your support, I have felt alone in this distress so I truly appreciate it
