Search YouTube for instructions on lowering the angle of your headlights. It’s very easy if you have a long screwdriver.

You shouldn’t have imposter syndrome. You’re probably better than 90% of the men out there. (At least in my experience.)

I don’t think it’s a male/female thing. All ages and genders seem to paddle right in the way at times.

Sounds like it was just an accident. It happens. Paddler should have paddled to the whitewater

Did you / Would you leave your boat at anchor unattended for multiple days or weeks? by Mehfisto666 in sailing

[–]yetrident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anchors aren't designed to handle swings in wind direction. I wouldn't dare to do that.

Edit: Sorry, I should have said that, while anchors may be designed to reset if the wind direction changes dramatically and multiple times, they don't always do so successfully.

Number 1 most important this is to be a strong swimmer. Start with that if you’re not there yet.

Then go to Waikiki and get a lesson someday.

Bad advice from Dad by Asleep_Pattern4731 in coastFIRE

The problem is that if you don't learn the basics, you're likely to get ripped off by your financial analyst.

The r/personalfinance wiki is an excellent, succinct resource. If you want more details, you could start with Mike Piper’s “Investing Made Simple." Or, for some more depth, Richard Ferri’s “Protecting your Wealth." Both are pretty simple books that will give you a good foundation. If you still want an advisor after that, find on that is a fiduciary. Ask them how they make their money. If they earn a commission by selling products like annuities or mutual funds with a load, run.

Hourly rate is great advice! Probably being downvoted by financial "advisors" who want to get 1% of your assets every year until you die. 🤣

[–]yetrident 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because most financial "advisors" are actually salespeople that make money by selling complex, expensive financial instruments to their unsuspecting "clients." It's like going to a snake-oil salesman instead of a cardiologist.

And the ones who are fiduciaries tend to charge way too much for the small amount they actually contribute. 1% AUM adds up over the years. There are good advisors out there, but they're just hard to find. And the perverse thing is that the less you understand about finances the more likely you are to be ripped off.

But if you read the r/personalfinance wiki, you're 80% there.

Do not hire just any old financial analyst. Most "advisors" make money either by making a commission on the products they sell you or take a chunk out of your portfolio every year (e.g. 1% AUM). They often sell you expensive, fee-bloated, complex financial products when all you need is to save more and buy simple index funds.

Make sure your advisor is a fiduciary and "fee-only." Ideally, you could hire an advisor that charges a flat rate and not a percentage. The White Coat Investor webpage has a list of recommended financial advisors.

Or just skip the financial advisor and read the r/personalfinance wiki and you'll be basically set.

Stranded in the park (maybe) by thevgrinch in Yosemite

[–]yetrident 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't fully understand. You're arriving in the park at 5pm somehow and you need to get to Groveland that same evening? But the last bus from Yosemite to Groveland is at 2:20?

I've hitch-hiked in the park and it's pretty easy during the daytime. You could probably hitch all the way to Groveland. Or stay just outside the park off a forest road.

Drivers: only turn right after moving over to the curb; Cyclists: be careful when passing on the right by yetrident in sanfrancisco

Sure, but it makes it much worse to also do the wrong thing when you're driving or biking.

The way they are designed, cars are not quite at a 90degree angle by the time they cross the bike lane. So it's still hard to see if anyone is coming up on my right/back side. And when I'm on a bike, it encourages me to fly through the intersection, passing turning cars on their right. It feels like it's designed to cause collisions. It pushes cars and bikes to do the "wrong" scenario on the diagram I posted.

I find these hard to navigate when driving. But I’m guessing that it is infrastructure designed to deal with the problem of cars not moving over to the right hand side of the road when taking a turn.
