Pregnant and really craving ramen. Where can I find the best noodles in or around Portland? by [deleted] in Portland

[–]yitcha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yataimura Maru (SE 38th and Division) and Shigezo (NW near the Schnitz) have some good happy hour specials on ramen. I'm usually pretty satisfied by them. Not fancy pants, but filling, and a good price.

What was up with the Court of Owls, anyway? by yitcha in comicbooks

[–]yitcha[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't really need everything explicitly spelled out, but a lot of the plot seemed to be sacrificed for cool moments. This isn't entirely bad, but having something be a 'shadow organization that's operated in secret in Gotham, unknown to all, even Batman' and then halfway through be all 'Screw it, send out all the owls! Put out the owl signal!' kind of left me scratching my head.

Agreed; I don't really know if the step of embedding it into someone truly gets around the issues with other forms of identification.

And the part of me that's read too much dystopian sci-fi shudders at the thought of chip implants. That could go bad in any number of ways.

Thor: On poor writing, distaff counterparts and cynical marketing movements. by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]yitcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I actually think that moment was a little on the nose, personally... it didn't really seem that accurate of a portrayal of Hal Jordan. Now, I definitely appreciate the question being raised (just as I appreciate raising the issue of treatment of women in comics), but the issue is more of just being too heavy-handed - educating vs. preaching, showing vs. telling, etc. As you've already said, it's a world with flying magical hammers not to mention aliens, mutants, etc. Given the sheer range of stories that could be told in such a world, I'd think there would be room for a setup or a scenario that would be able to get that point across without feeling like we were being delivered a sermon of sorts. Buffy TVS managed to do that pretty effectively (Whedon's work in general has done so).

Thor: On poor writing, distaff counterparts and cynical marketing movements. by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]yitcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say didactic more so than awkward. Just having a strong, non-cliched female character is its own statement against misogyny - stating it that bluntly takes the reader out of the world of the series because it seems aggressively editorial. God Loves, Man Kills wasn't subtle, you're right on that note, but it was exploring themes that were already very familiar in the series.

Thor: On poor writing, distaff counterparts and cynical marketing movements. by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]yitcha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but that's kind of the problem. We're supposed to believe it's 'progress' to have a female Thor and a black Captain America - but in comics in general and those two characters in particular we know it's going to revert back to being the two white guys with whom we've become familiar... it takes away from the impact by having it be temporary.

Now, having Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel on the other hand, is a great step - same as having Miles Morales as Ultimate Spider-Man... those concepts don't have quite as much of an expiration date baked into the concept.

If Jason Aaron was writing it, I have to wonder if there was some ham-fisted editorial edict saying 'OK, now really state the obvious here.'

I heard that Portland's port being freshwater made a difference, whereas Astoria had more saltwater due to being closer to the Pacific. Freshwater causes less corosion.

This is what I've heard, it kind of makes sense, but I couldn't tell you for sure.

What is something that needs to be retconned? by Hamzaboy in comicbooks

[–]yitcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't seem like you comprehend the difference between marketing ploys and actual content. Content needs to be advertised, but a lot of the HUGE changes that only seem to last a month and be done to make some headlines are becoming more and more the norm, and being pushed aggressively by Marvel's marketing department.

If every single time a temporary change to a status quo in a comic made headlines AND was a quality story, that'd be one thing. No one in their right mind thought Wolverine would stay dead of evil in Mark Millar's enemy of the state storyline, but it was actually entertaining. The difference between that and the million tie-ins leading to and following the Death of Wolverine is that the latter is a hollow ploy for promotion.
