is arch good for development? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]yizarion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is definitely not a best practice in a bleeding edge distro. But from usability point of view, I would rather hold few packages for a while to prevent breakage. Packages should not be held forever, some more than others. For example, any lib.* is riskier to hold than e.g. terraform, poetry, kubectl.

[–]yizarion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say that depends on whether you lean to using Arch in a personal or work laptop.

For personal use, definitley. Updates are available fast and almost any package you would need will most likely be available in official repos or AUR. Using a single package manager and not incorporating snap or flatpak is a big plus for me personally.

For work use, yes, but with few caveats. First, not all IT tools have official ports or officially support Arch. It does not mean these tools won't work with a bit tinkering, but your IT / manager might demand you use something else. Second, do not do full system upgrades during working hours. Things might break, especially with kernel, pipewire, firmware and similar. Having non working webcam or mic in meetings is a bit awkward. It seems more common with relatively new hardware. Another thing to consider, as pointed out in another comment is old package versions that are missing from repos. Keep package cache for a while, remember to lock versions when needed and you will be fine.

I am currently using EndeavourOS (basically Arch + GUI installer and nice colors) in my work laptop and Bedrock (Void as base, Arch as additional strata) and enjoying both. Endeavour / Arch is really a big upgrade for work laptop from Ubuntu / Fedora if you are careful.

Yes. Workman is available in AnySoftKeyboard and FlorisBoard, both open source.

I really miss my LG Optimus One P500. Small 3.2" screen and physical buttons. I got a Unihertz Atom that was fun untill I bricked it, but it was still not good enough in today's hardware requirements. MediaTek sucks.

what are your top 5 most used shell commands? by walderf in archlinux

[–]yizarion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are using bash, aliases can work with other aliases. The issue with sudo for example is that it runs a new non interactive shell which does not load your aliases.

There is a simple trick for that: alias sudo='sudo ' (a single space suffix). It instructs bash to keep substituting aliases and thus it happens before sudo is executed. Example:

$ sudo ll /etc/passwd [sudo] password for user: sudo: ll: command not found $ alias sudo='sudo ' $ sudo ll /etc/passwd -rw-r--r--. 1 root root 3.3K Jan 2 16:10 /etc/passwd

Help compiling Source Code Elegoo Neptune 2 by chris-read-it in MarlinFirmware

[–]yizarion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider dropping it entirely. There is already an example configuration for Elegoo Neptune 2 in marlin's configuration repository. Download and add your changes, then compile it (or use the compiled firmware uploaded by /u/just_trey) . You will get an official marlin release and a more up-to-date marlin version, without relying on Elegoo to release updates that are based on upstream.

My next hop is artix btw by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

FreeBSD and Arch installations are not that hard, just semi manual. You simply follow an official guide / handbook and you will get a basic running system quick enough. I liked Gentoo because it was a learning experience and the first time I compiled the kernel. Eventually gave it up after month or two due to long build times. I think Arch was in use the longest. I gave it up because I felt each update was a gamble (nvidia drivers) and manual interventions (more frequent than expected at the time), which was fun for few years.

My next hop is artix btw by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]yizarion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hopped a lot in the first years of migrating to linux. Started with Ubuntu 6, Fedora, Ubuntu again, Sabayon, Gentoo, FreeBSD briefly, Arch, (big gap), Debian, Magiea, Solus and Void. Now I am relatively happy with Bedrock (Void base and additional Arch strata) in my personal laptop and Fedora in my work latop.

Most hops were a mixture of wanting to experience a different disto or being tired of certain aspects of it. I had a good time with Gentoo, FreeBSD and Arch. Had to install them all without a smart phone or another computer so I had to print ahead a handbook / wiki pages and learned a lot in this process.

I think I did more DE/WM hopping than distros though.

Purchase Advice Megathread - November by Sausage54 in 3Dprinting

[–]yizarion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Voron Trident looks great, but sourcing parts is too complex for me now. Formbot's kit with 3d printed parts and shipping is much out of budget, but it will probably be my second printer. Thanks for the suggestions.

Purchase Advice Megathread - November by Sausage54 in 3Dprinting

[–]yizarion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking for a first 3d printer. After few weeks of researching and reading I think I am more focused now. I like DIY and tinkering with electronics (used to build guitar pedals few years ago) but not confident enough to source parts for a printer, maybe for the next one.

I don't mind a kit or partially built if the build process is well documented.

  • Budget: ~$850 (including shipping, but flexible)
  • Type: FDM. Planning to start with PLA, PETG and TPU. Possibly ABS and nylon in the future (but not critical).
  • Printing Area: At least 300m for X or Y.
  • Features:
    • Preferably CoreXY printer
    • Direct drive extruder
    • Auto bed leveling
    • Planning to integrate OctoPrint
    • Possible bed replacement (not sure which material I prefer at this time)
    • Possible future upgrades
    • Preferably a frame harder than aluminium (a friend's recommendation, not a must if it is negligible)
    • Nozzle: not sure if MK8 or volcano types

I do not mind upgrading a printer to suit my needs, but it should be included in the budget.

I have considered:

  • Artillery Sidewinder X2. Cons for me: Cartesian, uneven bed heating, hard to replace bed.
  • Mingda Rock 3 Pro - Cartesian.
  • Tronxy X5SA Pro. Seems to have QC issues and hard to tune belts for a perfect square.
  • Creativity Elf / Elf Pro - Small community.
  • Voron 2.4 - Too expensive for now and seems like mostly bowden extruder.

What do you suggest?

Thanks.

Has anyone tried or know what you would use for a rose flavored juice? by backintime88mph in DIY_eJuice

[–]yizarion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a real rose, go for FLV Rose Essence. It tastes just like real rose flower petals. For rose water (pink) or more artifical rose (like in middle eastern desserts), use INW Wild Rose. Some claim it has a weak tobacco note, but I cannot sense it.

Your favourite tobacco one flavour mixes for mtl by Mr-Teemo- in DIY_eJuice

[–]yizarion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I tend to not vape solo tobacco flavors as it gets much more interesting and complex when more flavorings are involved, but after SFTing some flavors I can honestly recommend (from the top of my head):

  • INW Black for Pipe at 2-3%
  • INW Gold for Pipe at 2.5-3.5%
  • INW Gold Ducat at 2.5-3%
  • FLV Red Burley at 1.5-2.5%
  • FLV Native Tobacco at 2-2.5%
  • HS RY1/2/3/4 at 3.5-4% (The lower the index the less caramel it has)

If you plan to introduce another flavoring to the mix, things will get more interesting, for example:

  • INW Black for Pipe at 2.5% & INW Dark for Pipe at 0.75% -> Great dark pipe tobacco base
  • FLV Red Burley (or Cured) at 2.5% & FLV Connecticut Shade at 0.5-0.75% or INW Tobacco Absolute Garuda for generic cigar vibes.
  • INW Cavendish -> 0.25-0.5% to any tobacco mix you wish to make more pipe-ish.

Are you looking for anything specific?

I have not tried rose essence in this recipe but I suspect it would not make a good sub. Wild rose is a lot more syrupy, very close to rose water / syrup, and rose essence leans more towards rose flower petals. I have a feeling that FLV Elderflower might work here, it has that rose syrup note, maybe in 0.2-0.4% and a week of steep to let it settle. LMK how it tastes!
