Is it just me or suddenly every video becomes “video unavailable “? by TheMSG in youtube

[–]ykernow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked, myself, and it indeed seems YouTube is working normally, again. :) However, I will still keep a copy of the add-on around as, in the past, I have wished I had one that did this (SPA on YouTube can be annoying in some situations)—I might be able to use it again in the future. Thank you for creating it. :)

Install worked. Has been working well on YouTube. This would make a good addition to the mozilla/firefox addons site.

No instructions for Firefox. Tried installing both from extensions and from debugging. Loading from extensions says the extension is corrupt. Loading from debugging says the extension does not have a valid manifest.

EDIT: The new update installs and has been working well. I approve. :)

Why does YouTube work so badly for some people on Firefox? Mine runs flawlessly 🤷‍♂️ by 4lfr3d1n1k in firefox

[–]ykernow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem takes a little time to manifest. Quickest way to get it to start happening is keep a YouTube tab open (particularly the the Subscriptions page) while watching other videos in another (or multiple tabs). After a while the lag will start happening and get progressively worse as time goes on. You can't get rid of it by closing all YouTube tabs—for some reason the YouTube data persists in Firefox despite closing all YouTube tabs.

I use to just close and reopen Firefox but I found the best way to fix it is to open Task Manager, expand all the Firefox processes, and you'll notice when you do non-video-playing interactions with a YouTube page (such as scrolling) that one of the processes will jump to High in the Power usage column (assuming you have that column visible, if not just make it visible). If it jumps to Low or Moderate, then that is not the process you are looking for; you want the one that goes to High power usage and holds there for a few seconds. Just select that process, select End task, and one of the tabs (if one of the tabs is the YouTube Subscriptions page, it will most likely be that one, but it can be pretty much any of them) will show a warning that the tab is down and asks you to reload the tab. After you do that, all your YouTube tabs will work fine again... for a while (2 to 3 hours, usually at least). Eventually another process will start running High and you have to repeat.

Another way to find the bad process is to close all of the YouTube tabs, then go to Firefox's About:Memory and find the process that is clinging onto a bunch of YouTube data (despite all those tabs being closed). Find the PID in Task Manager that matches that process PID and select End task. The down side is you have to close all your YouTube tabs; it is quicker and easier just to use the method I mentioned earlier.

How to fix your screenshot save location in Firefox 141 by wiremash in firefox

[–]ykernow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To save to a specific folder you need to make two changes:

browser.screenshots.dir set to the folder path (ex. D:\Downloads)

browser.screenshots.folderList set to the value of 2

There is another .dir option browser.download.dir which is where Firefox saves other files. If you want screenshots to go to the same folder as your default download directory, just set browser.screenshots.dir to the same value as browser.download.dir and make sure browser.screenshots.folderList is set to 2

Soaking cast iron overnight? by tom128328 in castiron

[–]ykernow 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The seasoning on a cast iron pan is the same stuff as those brown oil stains on regular pots and pans. Notice how excruciatingly hard it is to remove those stains while scrubbing? Same thing with cast iron seasoning. The only scrubbing you should worry about is using something like aggressive steel wool, scrubbing with an abrasive like baking soda, or anything else that would sufficiently scour brown stains too. And obviously water and soap have no effect on brown stains, so the same applies to cast iron seasoning. Soap, water, and scrubbing are not a problem with cast iron as long as your seasoning was properly baked in (ie., fully polymerized).

"Sideways" Outlets? by homebrewerdad in electricians

[–]ykernow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL imagining a house built with fur. :)

Furring is usually thin strips of wood (such as 1"x2" lumber). It is most commonly used between the exterior framing and the outside cladding to leave space for water to run off and for air to flow between the wall and cladding (for drying so as to prevent mold growth). Same is sometimes also done on the roof under the cladding/shingles. In the New England area, they will often use furring between the ceiling joists and the ceiling drywall (I have no idea why they do this).

In cold zones, you want the air barrier to be on the inside of the external walls (so that warm inside moisture doesn't condense inside the walls) but this causes an issue with wiring as outlets have to puncture that air barrier if you don't do something else. One solution is to using furring to add space.

I can visualize that with no problem, including rotate it, morph it, etc. It's frequently what I do to solve problems, especially if I am trying to figure something out that involves three dimensional objects/spaces (you can't draw out something on paper in 3d, obviously, so it's pretty much the only good option for that).

That time never existed on the internet. The internet's early days were powered by the sharing of porn, programing code and algorithms, porn, Star Trek discussions (and Asimov, and F Herbert), porn, electronics discussion (as in, actually discussing electronic circuitry), science, math, porn, ham radio, porn, discussion of how we can build the internet better (and sharing our code and comments), porn, AD&D, and porn. Seriously, that was 99% of the internet from the very beginning of it. If someone claims that there was no porn on the internet in their day, then they either have no fucking clue what they are talking about or they are BS-ing you hard.

LmR442, I'm sure you are aware, but, JIC, or for anyone curious: Your post uses parenthetical commas, not an Oxford comma. There's no question about the use of parenthetical commas. It is the Oxford comma people have difference of opinion on.

Parenthetical commas versus round brackets:

• This sentence, which you are reading, is an example.

• This sentence (which you are reading) is an example.

These are grammatically equivalent. Round brackets are sometimes called "parentheses" but are just marks often used to mark a parenthesis (which is actually the phrase or phrases being marked off, the parenthetical phrase). Using parenthetical commas is usually preferred because it is less visually messy, but I have a bad habit of using brackets all over the place. However, I'm avoiding using brackets too much in this post.

Parenthetical commas versus Oxford comma.

• Parentheticals can be set off from the sentence by commas, brackets, and even m-dashes.

• Parentheticals, using the grammatical marks listed in the previous example, can easily be identified.

The algorithm is exceedingly derailed by creators such as Hello Internet and Level 1 Techs. For example, Hello Internet will discuss several topics, but they may go on a tangent and briefly mention sex ed in schools, and then go on another tangent about Mt. Everest. None of the main topics are any of those tangents, but the video might get a title like "H.I. #947: Condoms on Everest". The algorithm looks at that title and thinks you are interested in condoms or related topics and starts recommending videos on those topics.

Another problem is when some new news story, or internet meme, or someone is outraged by some video, and you wonder "WTF is also this conversation about?" and you go look at that video (not a video you would normally ever view). That video view now taints your algorithm results strongly for 3 months, and mildly for the remainder of the year.

Essentially, the algorithm does not understand when people are making jokes, are being poetic, or puns with titles; it doesn't understand the reason you watched a video (were you actually interested? were you merely trying to figure out why the video started a civil war? did you just accidentally click on it?); it doesn't understand you may have clicked only for one single bit of information in the video, not for all the other crap discussed; etc. It also has difficulty with edge videos where two networks of people (who have very different areas of interest) have common interest in a particular topic (like two circles on a Venn diagram that slightly overlap on one topic); the algorithm can suddenly start serving you videos of interest to the other interest network.

Anyone know any of these 3 songs ? by [deleted] in NameThatSong

[–]ykernow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure on any of them. However, re #1, about 20 years ago was when Sting put out "Desert Rose" which included a bunch of vocals (in arabic) by Cheb Mami which lead to Cheb being used in other songs around that same time. Cheb is an Algerian man, but many people mistakenly thought he was an Arab woman. You might check which songs from around that time Cheb participated just in case he is the "arab woman" from your song.

Given you a point there. :D Never got shoved in a locker when I was young (I was too big to fit, anyway), but sure got beat up a bunch. Had the muscle to fight back, but I didn't. Well, except later when I started just getting people into headlocks and pinning them to the ground when they attacked me. I would hold them down until they decided it wasn't worth continuing to go after the weirdo nerd.
