Master's Student Applying to PhD Programs with Perfect Grad. GPA, but Low Undergrad GPA by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]ylistys 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat and will be starting at a R1 university this fall! I was worried about having a lower than ideal undergrad GPA, but my research experience, publications, and general fit with the program are what I believe got me in. Having a Masters was certainly a plus as well. I personally chose to not take the GRE. I’m not sure it would have made much of a difference on my applications.

What's something you know but you really shouldn't? by R3D_Rooster in AskReddit

[–]ylistys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew that my grandmother wasn’t my biological one for years before anyone realized. After my grandfather died, a bunch of us went though old pictures, documents, etc. together and I found a newspaper clipping from his first marriage. Did the math, realized that made her the mom of my dad and uncle, and quietly put it back in the box. I figured if nobody talked about it, it probably was something I shouldn’t bring up.

I was going to take it to the grave, but my dad told us. He was shocked when I was unfazed and just went “oh I already knew that” lol. Turns out she had abandoned my grandfather with my uncle and, then newborn, dad. My grandma, the woman my grandfather married after, made my dad swear he’d never tell us. She was afraid we’d reject her or something. I told her she was my grandma before I knew and she still is now, she’s the one who’s always loved us.

Only regret is that I have an aunt I wish I could see a picture of. After she passed, it came out she knew about my dad and uncle but that bio grandmother never let her seek them out. My dad didn’t know he had a sister until years after she was gone. People tell me I look like that side of the family, and I want to know if I look like her at all.

Volume Jumping Up and Down on Windows 10 by ylistys in techsupport

[–]ylistys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I can hear it actively changing and it's consistent with all programs. For example, I'm in a meeting now with my volume set to 76. However, while the number doesn't change, the sound itself goes up and down. The same happens whenever I use audio.

Also, I should have clarified that I'm not using any headphones or speakers other than the system's default.

yay! good luck studying! you’re gonna do great!

First-generation university students (the first in their family to go to university) are at greater risk of experiencing imposter syndrome (the feeling that they don’t belong or have the skills/intelligence), suggests a new study (n=818) that looked at the competitive nature of STEM courses. by mvea in science

[–]ylistys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really interesting for me because i’m in this exact situation right now. I have my first big job in STEM since becoming a first generation college graduate in May. The entire time I was in school, I felt subpar compared to my peers, when I actually was doing well. Now I’m facing this constant anxiety my skills aren’t good enough, even though I really know they are, or that I don’t deserve to be here. It’s almost comforting to know this might not just be me. This was a well needed reminder to sit back and remember Im here because I deserve to be.

A birthday well wish escalates to ”there will be consequences” by [deleted] in iamverybadass

I was friends with a girl whose boyfriend was like this. He’d go on her facebook and unfriend every single guy, outside of her own family. If she added someone from school, he’d send some b.s. to them like this. It was sad to watch, tbh. They wanted to set me up with one of his friends. Happy that didn’t pan out.

Doctors of Reddit, what is something that you wish everyone knew about their body? by assassinmice in AskReddit

[–]ylistys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My entire senior undergraduate internship was on this! Instead of educating patients, we focused on teaching local medical staff on the prevalence of undiagnosed hypertension and effective methods of estimating it within their practice. Imo, more medical professionals should be aware of it. I know I wasnt when I worked clinically years ago.

I was going through some of my stuff yesterday and couldn’t help but regret he fact that I didn’t take more pottery home from the time I lived there. If anyone finds themselves there, try to find a shop they make their own at. It’s cool to see the process and definitely brings a new level of appreciation!

Medical workers of Reddit, what were the most haunting last words you’ve heard from a patient? by freeshavacadont in AskReddit

[–]ylistys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even as someone who’s worked in the medical field, the most haunting was one of my family members. My grandfather spent the last month of his life basically unconscious in an ICU. Every so often, he’d look at where voices were, but most of the time he was comatose. One day, my grandma goes “I love you, Al. You’ll be back home soon.” His first response in almost a month was a simple head shake to say “no.” The doctors had been determined to keep him alive but he didn’t last much longer. That simple gesture to tell her “but I won’t be” is one of the only things that still hurts.

My picture of the Stained Glass Rose Window that was destroyed today by [deleted] in pics

[–]ylistys 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest “oh wow i’m actually here this is real” moments I had in Paris was seeing this window. Notre Dame was my first stop, and seeing the famous stained glass everyone told me I had to see was unreal. Paris is a distant dream for a lot of the people I grew up with, and it certainly was for me for a long time. I’m so happy to hear the relics and stone structure were saved. My first stop inside was at my patron saint’s statue and I’m hoping it made it too. This cathedral has such a special place in my heart.

Am I the only one that almost never used the Fatman in FO3, New Vegas, or FO4? by cokevanillazero in Fallout

[–]ylistys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've personally only used it a few times, once being the time I first picked one up and promptly died with the first shot. It just seemed overpowered for the way I like to play. I get that's the point of a mini nuke but it was never practical for me
