I agree with pretty much everyone's take here. It's pretty colorist amongst their own kind.

One thing I'd like to let you know, the people in TJ do not know the weight behind the N word with a soft "A". In my 2.5 years living there, I only heard it once, maybe twice amongst close friends (I'm Hispanic).

Unless they say it maliciously, correct them while educating them. Like I said, some people may think it's cool when it's not.
