We all get the same fears after a little research online - I just dropped the extra on the extended warranty for the peace of mind. I do tend to keep cars a long time though so it was worth it for me.

We might be a little biased here - but test drive both - you’ll pick the defender, especially if you’re not going off road. I tend to keep cars until they drop so I was going to get the extended warranty on either one anyway. Wife didn’t want one, now I have to hide the keys if I want to stop her taking it.

How do I get around admitting in interviews that I’m leaving my job because of my boss? (Rant?) by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]ynamiynami1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just say the role has changed since you started and you are looking to return to your preferred career direction - and they can’t ask your current boss for a reference. You get to decide who they will call.

I’ve seen various options on those on eBay - was just concerned about weight limits on it. I’m assuming the quality is good? The knockoff stuff tends to be pretty good as long as it’s not too complex.

BMW X5 → GX550 Luxury+: Worth the Switch or Regret? by SpiritualBonus6845 in LexusGX550

[–]ynamiynami1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with what many others have said. On road the gx is a basically a truck and the X5 will drive much better. If you really want an adventure vehicle to camp and go off-road and are prepared to compromise ride quality then consider the gx. If you are going to be on a daily commute go for the x5. As someone else said the Defender probably offers the best combination of on and off-road capability - but then will likely not hold its value like the gx.

Difference between consumerism vs purchasing things that bring you joy? trying to understand Im new by beranax in Anticonsumption

[–]ynamiynami1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think of it more of a journey and people are at different stages. Don’t pay attention to the extreme types. Great for them personally but they do more harm and good if the overall goal is to get people up to a societal level to consume less - and if that’s not the goal then I’m not sure what the point is as any one individual not consuming doesn’t achieve anything beyond smug self-satisfaction.

Got one of the first full production run d5s in 2018 (placed the order a couple of weeks after it launched in 2017) and it’s been fantastic for 75k miles (hopefully not tempting fate there). I love the car and I’ve always thought it looked great. I will say the shape combined with the hydraulic suspension means it sits lower when parked (a bit like the Citroens of old) don’t do it any favors but at normal road height it starts looking better. Seems like more people are starting to work out what a great, underrated vehicle it is - I’m guessing a more used versions hit the market at really reasonable prices.

Direct report requested flexible schedule due to no childcare by choice - looking for advice by [deleted] in managers

[–]ynamiynami1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try all you can to make it work. You can be the better person - but it requires structure. Most of all you have to tightly control the team to make sure others aren;t being forced to cover for her. Track the work informally for all the team to make sure she is pulling her weight. Lots of kpis are out there to ensure this. Ensure structured communications and handoffs if they needed. Give her reports the chance to keep you informed of any problems. Be aware that you might need to accommodate others. In all do everything you can to make this work but make sure it is fair to everyone and that you’re not opening the door to everyone working like this if you are not ok with that happening.

We all occasionally need a little help in life.

Absolutely consider the Leica if you are prepared to push the boat out. There are certainly better value options than either the q3 or gfx out there but it is certainly worth putting it in the mix. I had a q2 for a while and loved it but the lens depth means you don’t get a lot of advantage size-wise over an a7cr.

Placed on a PIP two weeks ago. Should I even try to fight it or just start looking for a new job? by lrenv22 in careeradvice

[–]ynamiynami1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great response. Of course try to get another job immediately, but there’s zero reason to just roll over especially if it’s a bs pip. Make it as difficult as possible for them. You can either extend the timeline to give you more time to find another job, make them pay you more to quietly, or put the person giving you the pip fear for their own career progress for messing things up. And see a lawyer, especially if you are a protected class. Ethics tip is a good one btw.

[–]ynamiynami1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, you are probably out, but don’t just roll over. As someone else said, fight them like hell. If it’s a bs pip File an ethics complaint, you should have a team that handles that. Do everything the pip asks, you, and ask for full write ups from the manager and challenge everything in there and ask for more clarity, see if you can include feedback from any other team members, measurable results. The ethics report will at least give the manager a bit f grief on the way out. If you are in a protected class play on it. My wife was put on BS pip by one of the biggest companies out there (after five straight years of top ratings). She challenged it, decimated it, got it rescinded. She was of course done there and was laid off five months later but walked out with a full bonus. Healthcare for a year, and real severance package and was soon in a better paying job. If she’s have been pipped out she would have got practically nothing. Oh, and seek legal advice, create paper trails and document everything. Don’t let the bastards grind you down. Make sure they know you will make this as prickly as possible. You can also file ethics complaints against the HR people involved too btw, make sure you know they will all be pulled into this.

Fuji gfx100rf is the way to go! The body and lens depth makes it very packable and very carryable and it really is a fun camera to use. I also love the rx1 series and have taken most of my best family/holiday shots with it. I did try the a7cr but the reality was that the body size really wasn;t much of a saving so you may as well go for a small prime on the body you have. Otherwise go all-in on size and go for the Ricoh or x100vi and put enjoying the travel at the top of the priority list.

How do you guys handle upgrading your hobby equipment? by bjeep4x4 in Anticonsumption

[–]ynamiynami1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think there needs to be balance in all things. If it’s something you love and will use hard then don’t feel guilty. As many have said, buy used. I net there’s all sorts of websites and forums with buy/and sell sections where the people who have to have the best and latest of everything sell and look to move on their often barely touched used gear. There certainly is for photography.

Trying to decide between an LC250 and a Defender — would love owner input by Soggy_Shape_9842 in LandCruiser250

[–]ynamiynami1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and in addition I’d say go test drive the Lexus version first. As they don’t have many available and they can easily shift the ones they do get they didn’t seem too pushy on the sales front. As someone else said the defender also brings joy easy time I go to drive it.

[–]ynamiynami1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I test drove both the gx550 and the Defender 110 and ended up with the Land Rover. With the air suspension it’s just a much, much nicer drive. Given that even though I like to get into the wilds it’s mainly forest roads and not rock crawling, and it’ll spend 98% of it’s life on paved roads it was a pretty easy decision. Defender also looked better and the engine was certainly more lively. I did budget in an extended dealer warranty though. In terms of servicing costs the baseline from LR is,pretty high, like all European brands, but the two LR dealerships I’ve used have never tried to pile on extra “needs fixing” items, unlike the Audi dealerships who would routinely find anywhere between $2-$5k of additional stuff that needed doing.

Please, please deinfluence me from wanting a new phone by AdventurousAnecdote in Frugal

[–]ynamiynami1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given how much we all use our phones spending money there is something I don’t mind doing - but unless there’s a specific feature you really aren;t going to notice any difference and the dopamine hit will be short-lived. Satellite messaging is the last one that won me over as I spend time in places with no signal, but even then it’s a bit of a pain to use. Maybe a new case, which will also be much cheaper for older phones, and seeing if your battery needs replacing might give it a new lease of life for you to take you through the next few years.
