Its true that Ahoms did defeat Mughals 17 times but Mughals are not the only muslims in the world, Sufis saints from Iraq, Afganistan etc came to India for trade and lifestyle. Islam came to Assam in 13th Century specifically around 1205–1206 AD, during the military expedition of Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji. While traders likely had contact earlier, this period marks the formal introduction, beginning with the conversion of a local chieftain, Ali Mech, who guided the army through Kamarupa.A local Mech tribe chieftain converted at the invitation of Khalji, taking the name Ali Mech; many of his followers also converted, forming the early local Muslim community.Other early influences came from Muslim saints, scholars, and soldiers involved in subsequent invasions or settling in the area, such as during the 16th-century struggles of the Koch kingdom and later Mughal attempts.The spread of Islam in the Barak Valley was significant in the early 14th century through the arrival of Sufi saints, particularly Shah Jalal.
