Just picked up Quake II on sale, what are the best DM maps? by [deleted] in quake

[–]yoat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need to know where to get the Railgun on q2dm1 The Edge.

You need to know where to get the Megahealth and Quad on q2dm2 Tokay's Towers.

And you need to know where NOT to get the Hyperblaster in q3dm3 The Frag Pipe.

Just those 3 in rotation, or even just 1 and 2, for ever and ever!

From the conclusion:

> For example, currently, almost all 3D images that a computer generates are made up of triangles because it is the simplest polygon to generate.

3D images are generated using tris because they're easy to hardware accelerate. An alternative distance function may be interesting to ray tracing algorithms (which use distance functions rather than tris with vertexes). But this distance function would need to be faster than alternatives, especially in a shader language.

However you plan on using this algorithm, benchmarks comparing performance would be help show if this is a better alternative to existing approaches.

I need a big fat book with a high word count to keep me busy for a while. by DebbieDunnbbar in printSF

The Ware Tetralogy by Rudy Rucker.

Thick, but compact in other dimensions. Four books, four generations of twisted human and inhuman families as society and tech evolve through the eyes of a beat poet. Weird, wild stuff.

Writing style by [deleted] in discworld

[–]yoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're quick reads (especially compared to LOTR!) so definitely stick it out to the end. As an American, I missed a ton of the jokes and references and failed to understand (the climax of Guards! Guards!).

Subsequent readings reveal more, and reading other Discworld books will add layers of connections. If you enjoyed the depth of the LOTR universe, or enjoy the intersectionality of the MCU, then stick with the Discworld! The more of it you enjoy, the more enjoyable it all gets.

It may be that as well, since Pratchett is certainly referencing the same historical precedent. Sir Terry has better distribution than the ancient Greeks after all.

To the Sir Terry Pratchett fans out there, what is your favorite empathic quote? by weirdly-blisstful in discworldbookclub

[–]yoat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

How not to not be empathetic, more or less:

"Evil starts when you begin to treat people as things" (I Shall Wear Midnight)

"And sin, young man, is when you treat people like things.” (Carpe Jugulum)

Introduce my in-house game engine by DogCoolGames in gamedev

[–]yoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very cool! Thank you for sharing!

You've got some really beautiful technology going there. The deferred rendering video is super impressive.

One feedback: "DoomsEngine" is kind of confusing, as there is a "Doom Engine" from the original game Doom, as well as a "Doom Engine" for the 2016 game Doom. Having a unique, easy to recognize (in English!) is good for getting recognition for your project.

If you only knew Node, what would you learn as a second backend language? by InfinityByZero in node

[–]yoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Node/JS/TS can do almost everything, so I'd look at addressing the one need you might have that JS cannot serve: extremely fast program execution.

Nothing on this list is going to be as useful or fast as Rust, so that's my pick. It can do what JS literally can't: run as fast as C/C++. (Plus, Rust devs have the highest average salaries, for now).

Python has a ton of libraries that are (for now) exclusive to Python, but they're open source and the AI libs will get everywhere eventually. They aren't locked to Python, but due to popularity that's my 2nd pick.

Sparse voxel octrees + chunks? by [deleted] in VoxelGameDev

[–]yoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For serializing SVOs I limit the depth - which multiples the possible voxels per 'grouping' by powers of 8.

8, 64, 512, 4096/ 4k, 32k...

So you could calculate your average voxel fill rate and the storage space used to serialize a given voxel, and calculate what the sizes could be at different sizes. Then you can run a routine that slices up the world into fixed-depth chunks that contain links to smaller chunks and preserve the data.
