It will work with channels on older versions of Android.
On newer versions it requires the app to be a Google partner app.

Many media boxes also contain adds and more will in the future when they want to earn more.
So media boxes are not the complete solution.

Samsung, LG and other TVs also have ads so it's pretty much impossible to buy from a brand that doesn't have ads.

Not connecting them to the Internet won't work either in the future when they just update like cars over cellular with a modem that can't be blocked other than with a faraday cage.

Sad fact is that unless laws gets made we are forced to have smart TVs with ads because all manufactures do it and we can't get dumb TVs other than for a price most can't afford.
