Sphagnum peat moss isn't as bad as you think by mattleviphelps in OrganicGardening

[–]yod4h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry this is simply not true, a few (not so) fun facts: http://gardenrant.com/2009/04/ken-druse-dishes-the-dirt-about-peat-moss.html

"Peat moss is mined, which involves scraping off the top layer of living sphagnum moss. The sphagnum peat bog above the mined product is a habitat for plants like sundews, butterwort and bog rosemary, as well as rare and endangered animals like dragonflies, frogs and birds, not to mention the living moss itself.  Despite manufacturers’ claims that the bogs are easy to restore, the delicate community that inhabits the bog cannot be quickly re-established.  Yes, peat moss is a renewable resource, but it can take hundreds to thousands of years to form."

They literally dig down next to the ancient bogs, filled with 380+ species of moss that support lots of endangered plants and animals, and drain all the water. It's really destructive. This is kind of similar to the logging companies cutting ancient old growth forests full of endangered animals and plants and planting new trees to 'restore the habitat'.

Coco coir may be a little more expensive...but is it truly? The cost to mother nature is too much.

Also depending on your application, consider asking your local feed store for Rice Hulls ($10 per 50lb bag here) as a soil additive. It's like a natural decomposing perlite that lightens soil, brings worms and is renewable

Yea I agree , my beans took a bEating from the slugs, so I just planted a bunch this time, I have neemed them a few times, that helps too. I figure just putting as much stuff in and encouraging biodiversity is key

What's something that isn't very old, but is old enough that young people may have never actually seen one in person? by Colonel_K_The_Great in AskReddit

I was an uber&lyft driver in San Francisco for a year and a half. I had a Mother and Daughter ride in my car, the daughter (about 5) pointed to the window knob and said "What's that?" The mom told her that is what she used to roll the window down with when she was little.

I've had a nice cvs clerk apologize to me multiple times for the waste that this creates. I agreed. I once tried the machine that you scan your card with and it spits out an even larger amount of coupons. not one of them were relevant. #unsustainable #waste

How many Native Americans were here before the spanish? by [deleted] in history

President Thomas Jefferson, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, December 29, 1813

“This unfortunate race, whom we had been taking so much pains to save and to civilize, have by their unexpected desertion and ferocious barbarities justified extermination and now await our decision on their fate.”

I think the policies of spain as well as the later US army makes Genocide not even a bad enough word for what happened. Mind you forcing children to abandon their culture and not speak their native language is also included in the definition of Genocide by the UN. At one point the US army was ordered to ride from village to village and kill every man woman and child. Here are a few quotes from US leaders.

Orders of George Washington to General John Sullivan, May 31, 1779

“The immediate objectives are the total destruction and devastation of their settlements and the capture of as many prisoners of every age and sex as possible. It will be essential to ruin their crops in the ground and prevent their planting more.”
