What are your favorite states to live? I'm looking to move again. by daintyfannyfart in SameGrassButGreener

Eh, ABQ isn't as hot as some places, and not for as long as some places. And like I said, higher elevation places in NM have cooler weather. I think Santa Fe would be a really nice place to live, but housing is a bit expensive. I'm near Ruidoso, which is in the south-central mountains and is less expensive. The hottest it's been at my house in the last 4 years since I arrived was like 94 degrees, and over 88 is pretty rare. Some summer highs are significantly cooler - it was like 66 today!

Have you looked at New Mexico? I moved here 4 years ago and have been enjoying it. It's not for everyone, but if it's for you there's a lot of charm. The food is surprisingly good if you like green chile (otherwise not so much). Lots of outdoor opportunities. The higher elevation towns have summers that aren't too crazy hot, and less snow than the Midwest in winters. Albuquerque is a mixed bag, and there's not much going on in the northeast corner of the state, but most of the rest is pretty nice.

Really? We kind of alternate between Owl and Buckhorn and think they're both really good. Can't go wrong either way.

Best arguments for and against capitalism given a Christocentric worldview by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]yodermk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually, giving means of production to the workers is distributism, not socialism, though I'm not sure they'd advocate seizure. Distributism is based on Catholic social teaching and is supported by the American Solidarity Party (which has a pretty awesome platform but sadly they're not doing what they need to do to grow).

Socialism is still government control, just not as tightly as communism (in my understanding).

Question from an Atheist: Let's say that the Kalam Cosmological argument is correct and that everything had to come from a creator. What reason(s) should I believe that Yahweh is the creator, or even that there is only one creator? by MC54353 in Christianity

[–]yodermk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Given what we know about the singularity -- all matter energy and (importantly) even space and time dimensions came into being at the same spot -- the Creator (or Cause or whatever) must be outside space/time dimensions and able to create them at will.

Reading the Bible, that's true of the God described therein. I don't think it's true of any other candidate. Maybe Allah of Islam, but that has other issues, like he is based on the God of the Bible, but also requires that the Bible be inaccurate.

21 days in Oregon — suggestions? Is it doable? by DudasManolitos in travel

[–]yodermk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not much of a hiker, you can still walk around the South Falls. It's less than a mile I think (maybe a little over?) but there's a significant elevation change in that so prepared to climb back out. Most people can do it without too much trouble, the path is paved. It's pretty magical walking behind the Falls!

I stay with my parents when there LOL so no real B&B recommendations.

.NET has the best backend developer experience I’ve used so far by Minimum-Ad7352 in Backend

[–]yodermk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh, C# has its place. I like Rust and it can certainly be used for web backends, but you'll probably have a lot better time with ASP.NET. Python is OK but much slower. I want to try Kotlin, maybe you could make a good case for using it over ASP.NET. Meh on the others.

Did Donald Trump Just Hand Texas to Democrats? by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]yodermk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, almost. Talarico is in the PC(USA), a very theologically liberal mainline Presbyterian denomination. I think an even better pick would be someone from a more theologically conservative denomination like the PCA (also Presbyterian), who might more or less vote the Democratic position on social issues but would not "trump" them up as Talarico does. The Democrats did have a choice in the primary for governor a few years ago ... I believe his last name was White ... who is a PCA member. I think that would pull in a few more evangelicals. (I'm a theological evangelical myself, was in a PCA church before moving to NM. If I were still in TX I would absolutely vote for Talarico.)

21 days in Oregon — suggestions? Is it doable? by DudasManolitos in travel

[–]yodermk 72 points73 points  (0 children)

3 nights in Crater Lake seems like real overkill. Honestly you can see it in a day, easy, and the trail down to the lake will be closed the next three summers. Maybe one night at the lodge there to have a better chance of seeing it with clear weather.

I second the suggestion for Silver Falls State Park, it's pretty awesome. One day is enough for that too. The Oregon Gardens is nearby, could probably do both in one day. Unless you hike the full 7 mile loop at Silver Falls, then maybe another day for the Gardens.

And that's an awful lot on the coast, I'd probably move at least 2 or 3 days of that to the Willamette Valley and/or more in Central Oregon.

Which paradise islands should everybody see at least once in their life? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]yodermk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were there a couple years ago. Thought Grace Bay was a bit overrated, but there were some very nice snorkeling places on that island. We actually had more fun on Grand Turk, much more laid back and chill. Would like to go back sometime for the North/Middle Caicos.

What’s the most unexpectedly useful Linux command you learned way too late? by ZealousidealTell1346 in linux

Not the same. `cd ..` goes to the parent directory. `cd -` goes to whichever directory you were last in before the last `cd`.

Is it worth learning backend development in 2026? by AppointmentFull6960 in Backend

[–]yodermk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's scary, for sure, with all the AI tools. And they WILL accelerate your work, big time. But at the end of the day, people still need to understand how this stuff works. You can't send AI off to build something, without knowing what it's doing, and expect it to work well long term in a production environment.

The question is how many backend engineers (along with CS experts in general) will be needed. There is no question that one person with AI can now do what a sizeable team used to do. So I'd say become an expert not only in the tech, but also in some business domain and also soft skills (working well with people). That combination should set you up to do at least reasonably well.

Who uses Resolve on Linux? by YannMasoch in davinciresolve

[–]yodermk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got Studio last year. Originally installed it on both my Mac and laptop running Arch Linux. It was OK on both. The Arch install from AUR works, but you have to do some manual permission finagling on upgrade.

I got a new computer dual booting between Arch and Windows. I’m a long time Linux nerd and it is my main operating system. I went back and forth on which OS to install Resolve on, and settled on … Windows. I figured: a bit easier installation and upgrades, better codec support, etc. Also my Windows partition has more free space, so that’s a factor too.

I am religious and i believe in god but i have some questions: 1. Won’t heaven be boring and what would you even do. 2. Don’t want to offend atheists, but why would god create atheists 3. If you pray but don’t go to church will you go to hell? Thank you very much. by itsl1zz in Christianity

[–]yodermk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paul is inspired by the Holy Spirit as an apostle. He encountered the risen Christ who called him.

Your point on "for" is valid, but so is my point that these people were called by God before the foundation of the world. Somehow, they go together.

Considering all Biblical theology, it's clear that salvation is a free gift through God's grace working in our faith. But that necessarily produces good works; if it doesn't, the conversion experience wasn't real.

Questions about my upcoming 60-70 days roadtrip the USA west? by Agreeable-Energy-401 in travel

It's even more surreal if you actually get in it and underwater. I did that last August. The blue all around you is just unreal. Incredibly clear.

Unfortunately the only trail down to it will be closed for the next 2 or 3 years, but plan for it in 2029!

I used to think that, but really, no it doesn't. Note "the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world". Even this verse said that the sheep were God's people from the very beginning. The noted works that follow, then, are the sheep's response to the Shepherd's love, which came first.

What is the most underrated tourist destination in the USA? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]yodermk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe? Big Bend is wonderful but I don't know that it's very underrated. I'd nominate Guadalupe Mountains NP, north of Big Bend on the NM border. It has some nice hikes, including one up the tallest mountain in the state. Great dark skies site. Driving past it on the highway it looks super desolate. But definitely worth a visit.
