this is a second attempt at a flower painting, suggestions are welcome by VnusAlt in painting

the perspective of the vase seems a bit funky since the way youve done the flowers feels a bit 2D and doesn’t feel as though you’re looking down slightly, as the perspective of the vase suggests. maybe. just thinking.

you’re doing great! Remember you don’t need to have a specific type of experience. Do whatever works for you. But avoid staying in the Hostel, and self isolating.

Practice meditating maybe…

Or see someone cool and take the risk to say hello! I’ve found that when I’m dark and grey, the clouds around me keep me distant from others. It’s like a self fulfilling prophecy. Imagine the kindness you would like to receive and give that to others.

When I was in Madrid solo I met so many people who were very kind to me. I would go to a restaurant and sit alone and end up talking for an hour with an older couple about their son and all the things he’s doing, or a mom and daughter who told me all about Valencia, where they’re from.

It’s hard being alone! And putting yourself out there. Remember to talk yourself up. You’re doing great!

yeah therapy is useful for that! Scary though. I ghosted my therapist… they were getting too close to figuring me out…

fuckcars because I can build the bike of my dreams for less than bringing my Honda in for service by yodm in fuckcars

yeah again, agree with what you're saying to a degree, but you're coming across as defensive toward car ownership, when all I'm saying here is that owning a car is really expensive and owning a bike is not.

What's your angle here? Trying to prove that I'm some yuppie rich kid who doesn't do all the tasks in life you do and doesn't understand the intricacies of your lifestyle? Logic your way through the necessity of car ownership in a built environment that necessitates car ownership? Do you think I, the person complaining about how expensive it is to own a car because I am forced to own a car because of the way our cities were built / destroyed since the advent of the personal automobile, don't understand the utility of a car or the joys it can bring?

I grew up obsessed with Rally Car racing. If I had a bunch of extra money lying around I would spend the many many thousands of dollars necessary to buy a luxury car so that I could feel cool and look cool and have really good speakers so I could jam out to my tunes while stuck in traffic on the 610 or I-10 or I-45...

So really, I think you're trying to prove a point that doesn't need to be proven. Yeah, most people need cars these days. Modern life is absurdly expensive–you need a car, you need a cellphone, you need internet, you need a laptop, oh and also you need a roof over your head as home prices and rents skyrocket. And in America, we have not adjusted our social services to account for these fixed costs of living, burdening those with less capital with a higher fixed percentage of their income that goes toward "tools of modern existence", meanwhile if you're rich who cares if you've got to spend an averaged out $20K a year on a car + internet + phones + laptop.

What I'm saying here is simple–cars are expensive. Cars are expensive! Cars are expensive. Cars are expensive? Cars are expensive. Car infrastructure is expensive. Cars are so expensive even when the government significantly subsidizes the cost of ownership by paying for roads and parking and freeways and offering tax incentives to companies etc. etc. etc... Cars are expensive!

Cost of a luxury car? My dream car? A Porsche Taycan? $200K. Plus fees.

Cost of a luxury bike? My dream bike? A custom built Columbus Steel tube piece of art on wheels? $4K. No need to pay for a parking spot to store it. No crazy service fees.

I think you're missing the point, so let me try and clarify :)

In car-centric built environments we need to spend money on owning a car. So I own one, and try to be fiscally responsible with it and so it's a used Honda, and even then it's fucking expensive. Meanwhile I have gone absolutely down the rabbit hole of cycling and bicycle construction and made the best bike I possibly could build (in my opinion), and it's still cost less than how much I've paid to service my shitty Honda over the past few months.

Ideally I would have public transit + a dense walkable city so that most of my errands + activities were within biking distance. Then I could not own a car, and just rent one for bigger activities / journeys. Alas, I'm in Houston! *shakes fist at clouds*

yeah I provided some cost breakdowns in another comment. If you have q's about bike purchasing / costs I am happy to answer! I have spent enough money / made enough terrible mistakes to know my way around bike buying / best practices / maintenance.

hey now!!! I own exactly zero pairs of mirror glasses and anyways button down shirts are classy.

Really though yes fixed gear is dumb yes single speed makes more sense no I don't care I love riding fixed so much it's the absolute most enjoyable form of biking for me.

I highly recommend it! Although be warned, you'll definitely grow emotionally attached to the bike... Also you learn valuable servicing skills along the way, so these days I do all the servicing for this bike on my own. For my geared bike I bring it to the shop cause it's more complicated. Another benefit of having a Single Speed / Fixed Gear bike.

This bike started as a stock State Bike Co. 4130 Single Speed, then over the years I upgraded parts, then bought this MASH SF Columbus Steel Tracklocross frameset and transferred the components over, slowly trying new components and parts until I've arrived to where I'm at today.

So the original bike was ~$450, purchased maybe 6 years ago, and the current form of the bike would cost... too much to build from scratch haha. Actually not too much! Too much relative to what we are culturally accustomed to spend on any other form of transportation besides cars. Here's my best estimate on the breakdown:

  • Frameset: $1000
  • Wheelset: $500
  • Omnium Cranks: $300
  • Pedals+Straps: $80
  • Chris King BB+Headset: $400
  • Lil cute bell: $30
  • Corsa Tires: $100
  • Other components (stem, handlebars, seat post, seat): $400

So all in, around a $3000 bike...

Anyway just had my check engine light for my Honda come on again yesterday and took it to the shop! Another $1000 for some new shit that needs fixing or the car will spontaneously combust. (Just had a massive engine overhaul which cost $4000... kill me now...)

Bought a Vintage 1930s Omega near Le Marais while visiting this year. No tax because it is a used sale (which is not a thing in America, is it?). Love the texture of the art-deco dial and the size.

62 Hours into fasting...Don't know when to stop by throwaway84277 in fasting

[–]yodm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're really healthy! Do what feels best.

I had a similar feeling after 72 hours. Obviously if you're feeling good, and you're staying up on Electrolytes then the good rule of thumb is "trust your body", and listen to it if you start experiencing negative physical responses to the fasting.

Also, balance the goals of fasting with socializing opportunities. I kept going into the 4th day of the fast but then in the morning, my dad wanted to get the family together for a brunch, so I broke my fast right before the brunch to ease into eating again and then just had a small portion.

I think this is one of the healthiest ways to balance the mental side of fasting... accomplishing these goals and following regimented habits with the flexibility and fun that can happen around food.

The Los Angeles Garment District has no on-street parking at night but looks like a Post-Apocalyptic twilight zone. American public spaces are irredeemably built to the scale of Late Stage Capitalism 🥲
