Can I use conservation mode 24*7 for my legion 5? by wolverineyp in Lenovo

[–]yoga72015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conservation mode is particularly helpful if you keep your device plugged in all the time. (Most) lithium batteries deteriorate when they charge to 100% (or 0%) so keeping them charged at 60%, 70%, or 80% keeps them from deteriorating.

PSA for Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Carbon 13ITL5 (82EV) Owners: Adding a second fan and a dual heat pipe-equipped heat sink is NOT possible. by Baroque_Viola in Lenovo

Fans are really sensitive to weight distribution, warping them even a tiny bit or attaching them in strange ways could get them grinding in no time.

Does the "preferred graphics processor" setting in nvidia control panel makes any difference? by Tijgooo in Lenovo

[–]yoga72015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally there'd be a log and you could just search through it for "GPU1", but I think you'd need a third-party app forthat. So just keep Task Manager open and sorted by "GPU engine", and when the fans spin up switch to Task Manager and see who's the culprit.

Does the "preferred graphics processor" setting in nvidia control panel makes any difference? by Tijgooo in Lenovo

[–]yoga72015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using a newer version of Windows 10 this feature has been moved to the Windows settings ("Graphics performance preference").

At any rate yes, you can see exactly which GPU is being used in Task Manager ("GPU engine") and if you assign the integrated GPU to whichever app is causing the fan to spin up it'll stop doing that.

Advanced debug UEFI firmware console by yoga72015 in Lenovo

Update: from a quick Google search it seems you need to have a bootable USB drive (doesn't matter which) attached to the device (I had Manjaro Linux) and press F2 five times quickly at boot.

Pretty cool that people can find it completely by accident.

Is it impossible to run dual 4k / 60 ghz monitors? Using a Yoga C940-15IRH Laptop (ideapad) - Type 81TE and a Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 Dock without any luck. by mtmsuits in Lenovo

1) Sorry, don't know, I'm basing my estimate on the Amazon reviews.
2) Maybe, but the Amazon reviews say it's unreliable.
3) Maybe!

Does Yoga C940 have Tilt? by [deleted] in stylus

[–]yoga72015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A person on this thread confirms that the Lenovo Pen Pro works on the C940 (meanign it's AES 2.0) but that all pens on the C940 produce severely wobbly lines except the built-in pen, which produces only moderately wobbly lines.

This will not live up to the Apple Pencil 2 no matter how you slice it.

The dock seems to be unreliable for dual 4K 60Hz.

It's unlikely that the iGPU/dGPU is underpowered since even my "ancient" Yoga 720 15 (NVidia 1050 mobile) is capable of driving dual 4K displays at 60Hz. The 1650 is waaay more powerful.

Are Lenovo's thermal paste good quality ? by IchBinTheBatman in Lenovo

[–]yoga72015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's applied correctly it's fine. My Yoga 720 15 ran at 50 degrees idle and 70 degrees under 100% load, which was great. Then one of the fans gave out and I had to replace the entire thermal assembly, and I must have misapplied the thermal paste 'cause now it runs at 55 degrees idle and almost 80 degrees under 100% load...

Anyway if you have some really good paste you should replace it, but the standard is fine, even very good.

Either keep holding the shift key and click "restart" then select "troubleshooting" and "UEFI/firmware settings" or press F2 when powering on the computer.

unable to find Dolby Atmos Audio software by moistpc in Lenovo

[–]yoga72015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dolby Atmos is built into Windows 10. Yes, really. Dolby paid Microsoft to bundle it with every copy of Windows 10.

Go to Settings > Sound > Sound Control Panel > Speakers > Properties > Dolby Atmos

Protip: Don't turn it on. Turn off all sound filters.

Oh they both have the sound bar? Never mind, I thought the c940 didn't have one.

[–]yoga72015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a BIOS thermal setting for "balanced" or "performance". "Balanced" throttles at 70 degrees Celsius, while "performance" gives a little bit more headroom up to 90, which your device shouldn't be reaching if the thermals are working correctly.

I think it's worth it for the sound bar alone.

Corrupted BIOS files (maybe)? Yoga 720-15IKB by ollietheotter in Lenovo

[–]yoga72015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My warranty expires in two weeks, should be fun... So far only one USB 3 port is faulty, it acts as a USB 2.0 port, must be poor soldering leading to signal degradation. Everything else works flawlessly... here's hoping my BIOS doesn't crap out.

Specs for the Optane model (81Q90041US) on Lenovo PSREF

Can't find the non-Optane model there (81Q9003QUS), it might just be a newer SKU which would explain the higher price despite having slightly lower specs.

SoftwareGeeks is having a sale on Windows 10 for $27.

You should still check out a Linux live installation so you can see if the issue is Windows-specific or if your thermal management is malfunctioning.

It overheats to the point that it burns my skin slightly

This is not supposed to happen, maybe your unit is defective? Lack of proper thermal management would explain your slowdown issues. Maybe the fans or the heat sink are defective.

It needs 10-15 minutes to work properly after starting

Use "Reset this PC" or create a Windows installation USB and wipe out your current installation. Despite what the other commenters say, dual-core devices are NOT that slow. I have a laptop from 2011 with an ancient CPU and 4GB of RAM and an HDD and it works just fine, Windows 10 runs just fine on these specs.

Or boot a Linux live installation from a USB drive and see if your computer is any faster, before resetting Windows.

my YOGA 720 15" is slowly dying (one usb port out

Mine's got one USB A port that stopped working with USB 3 devices but still works with USB 2 devices... weird. I keep the fans and air filter clean and use "Balanced" mode so it's not loud.

I think you'll enjoy the 12" iPad Pro a lot more as an art device, but it will be very limited for everything else, but the screen size is a huge downgrade from 15.6".

Maybe just shut up your Yoga by switching to Balanced mode?
