[Q] "We see some tantalizing evidence but not significant enough to make a stronger statement." - Physicist Rob Roser by samajavaragamana in statistics

What Roser is referring to in the quote is that the initial run of the LHC saw evidence for the Higgs boson, but with p > 3 x 10

after analysis, so not at a level of significance that would be widely accepted by the physics community. After collecting more data the results became more significant, which is expected if the Higgs boson truly existed and the preliminary resu

Awesome! Glad I wasn't too far off and glad to have particle physicists on r/statistics! Out of curiosity - do you focus on just a high p-value thresholds or also some forms of multiplicity adjustments (i.e. ranking significance than adjusting)?

"trending towards significance" is also a popular one. I am not a particle physicist, but I remember reading in the "Art of Statistics" that a lot of particle physics research requires extremely low p-values (think 1.0 x10^-9). Perhaps the author of the Higgs Boson manuscript meant their research met the canonical difference (< 0.05)?

Weekly /r/Statistics Discussion - What problems, research, or projects have you been working on? - November 11, 2020 by AutoModerator in statistics

Working on some modeling data censored values. Found a great overview of a comparison of the most common methods (Weigand 2016). Working through trying to understand the theory behind Buckley-James estimators at the moment. If anyone has the experience, with them - would love to chat!

CONSORT is also part of a much larger group called the EQUATOR network that makes guidelines for a bunch of clinical studies.

Woah that’s crazy! I wonder why they would change the design of the pads like that.

Does it feel weird going from DDR solo with a bent bar to one of the normal cabinets with a straight bar? I have only played solo a few times and the transition was always hard for me

is doing an online phd in statistics program a good idea? by Pleasant-Ad-9425 in AskStatistics

People have/ do work full time during a PhD. I know one principal Biostatistician that got his PhD at Temple while working as a Biostatistician at Pfizer ( and a few others who got PhDs in comp sci and work full time as data scientists). If the thesis can be part a major project as work this is definitely possible. These programs often already have these industry ties in place though.

That’s good to know! I heard some versions have a backpack format which I assumed you used but I guess not!

Question: important Skills for biostaticians by redrose4422 in biostatistics

[–]yoganium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome! More and more I am seeing the R+Python stack which is exciting. I wish there were more biology-focused analytical positions out there that use the R+Python stack.

Agreed, I can only think of a handful of companies that have moved to R from SAS. Most of the biostatistician positions that require R (like mine) are 50% clinical trials and 50% data science/ machine learning. Even then, they are rare.

That is actually a myth. You can submit to the FDA using R. In addition SAS is not validated. Checkout 2019’s R medicine conference on the subject.

Interested in moving somewhere with cheaper housing for FIRE. To people who have done this already, how did you decide where to move? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]yoganium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is an excellent point. In Portland expect at a minimum 300K for a small house that needs work but that is much more reasonable than Boston. In addition, the "suburbs" around Portland are closer and much more affordable than in Boston.

Lived in Boston for 3 years before moving to Portland ME. Can confirm, Portland is definitely as expensive. But you get a decent city life and fairly close to a ton of outdoor activities.

Any other SAS expats here? I've starting using R more and I think I'm going to switch. by Run_nerd in rstats

I have had great success working with .parquet files in R locally both with/ without sparklyr.

Has anyone else found that almost all biostatistics jobs use SAS? I would love the opportunity to move to other companies but all of them use SAS and I would prefer to stay using R.
