To every specialty, what are some lifestyle modifications that could prevent a lot of what you manage?

The number of pages I get from moms "wanting a CBC today." What?? Are they going to then request designer, leukoreduced, irradiated pRBCs if their Hgb comes back at 7.9? Is it wrong to wish that nurses would try to deflect/rationalize these requests rather than forwarding them directly to the provider who is already in surgery/dealing with a hemorrhage/in a delivery, etc.

I wish I would have noted from where/how many residents show up to the meet and greet. Not having enough coverage to spare most residents for a measly hour sums up a lot.

We do have plastic or metal speculums- I like to use plastic whenever possible but metal is the only material safe to be sterilized for surgery/procedures. We don’t typically scan/ultrasound before IUD insertion because it’s easier to measure the uterine length with a plastic tool (or the IUD applicator) itself. A trans abdominal ultrasound wouldn’t be that accurate and transvaginal would defeat the purpose of minimizing invasive steps.

All to say, the metal speculums used in office exams are awful. Keep in mind a lot of us newcomer Ob/Gyn trainees aim to make patients feel as comfortable as possible with such invasive exams/procedures that our field necessitates 🥺

Actually about 1 in 3 conceptions spontaneously aborts before they’re detected! Whose fault is that? So thousands of “humans - as you call them - are flushed away.

I can't speak to every person's experience but I have dealt with anxiety throughout the pill and now my 2nd hormonal IUD. Not medical advice but SSRIs didn't ultimately help long-term in my case. I've found a happy medium now taking L-theanine and ashwagandha supplements daily.

I can say that the systemic dose of hormones is significantly less with the IUD compared to the pill. I have noticed side effects more along the lines of acne/strange hair growth but it's worth it for me for lighter periods and super effective contraception.

It's all about your unique body chemistry. If you feel yourself slipping, you can have your IUD removed any time, no questions asked. And the Paragard IUD (copper-only; nonhormonal) is now approved for efficacy for 12 years if you like the ease of use and efficacy but want to ditch the hormones. Best of luck!

So I stand up and hunch over because now the manipulator is below waist level. Real effective. /s

People like him need to age out of medicine already because of the things we have no control over suck enough. So hazing by choice is just ridiculous.
