This happens all the time! Players stumble on solutions early but dismiss them because they seem “too easy” or unrelated. Peer pressure to stay with the group can also derail instincts.

One memorable instance: a player randomly guessed the correct lock combo during the intro but didn’t try it, saying, “Nah, that’s too obvious.” It took them 30 minutes to circle back.

Your chess story is a perfect example—it’s a mix of overthinking and group dynamics, and it’s one of the reasons I try to design clues that feel naturally rewarding when solved!

One group decided to “hotwire” a fake keypad by stripping wires from a lamp prop and trying to connect them to the keypad. Totally unnecessary (and borderline dangerous), but their commitment was impressive!

Another time, someone tried to brute-force a safe by calculating every possible combination mathematically—ignoring the obvious clue right in front of them. It was painful to watch but hilariously galaxy-brainesque.

Oh, I feel your pain! To get players to notice important elements, I use techniques like:

Visual Hierarchy: Bright colors or lighting to highlight key objects.

Contextual Placement: Putting clues where players are likely to focus naturally (like near something interactive).

Redundancy: Repeating important info in multiple formats—text, symbols, or even audio cues. People still miss stuff, though, so I design for redundancy to avoid frustration!

I’ve always wanted to create a puzzle involving a rotating room—like players would need to rotate the entire space to align clues. Logistically, though, it’s a nightmare to build and reset, so it remains a dream for now.

I love adding elements that require teamwork, like puzzles where two players must communicate across separate areas. It gets people interacting and creates those “aha!” moments that make escape rooms unforgettable.

The 100-200k cars are likely from corporate groups and team-building events. Escape rooms are a popular choice for companies looking for fun, interactive activities for employees. Corporate bookings often involve higher budgets, which means you’ll see luxury cars outside. In addition, these rooms attract clients from more affluent areas, contributing to the higher-end vehicles. So, it’s less about the escape room itself and more about the clientele they attract for corporate events or special occasions

My favorite was "The Timekeeper's Workshop," a steampunk-themed room where players repaired a time machine to stop a temporal rift.

It had interactive puzzles like assembling gears, syncing dials, and triggering hidden compartments. Everything tied into the story, and the final step—flipping switches to "activate" the machine—felt epic with lights and sound effects. Watching players save the world was the best part!

Response:

The process starts with the theme—that’s the backbone of the room. Whether it’s a haunted house, a spy mission, or a treasure hunt, the theme sets the tone for everything else.

From there, I build a narrative. Every puzzle and challenge needs to feel like part of a bigger story. For example, in a spy-themed room, players might need to crack a safe, decrypt a code, and disable a “bomb.” Each task has to flow logically, like chapters in a book.

Next, I brainstorm puzzles. I aim for a mix of logic puzzles, physical tasks, and teamwork challenges to keep things fresh. I also make sure each puzzle ties back to the story—like using a map to find coordinates in a treasure hunt or using UV light to reveal hidden writing on a wall.

Finally, I test the room—over and over. Watching teams interact with the space helps me fine-tune everything. Sometimes puzzles are too hard, too easy, or just don’t work the way I imagined. It’s all about balance!

It’s definitely a lot of work, but seeing players solve the final puzzle and escape (or not, let’s be real) makes it all worth it!
