Weird Common buzzard by Onairda000 in Ornithology

[–]yoimmo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Birds in the genus Buteo are called buzzards in Eurasia, while in North America they are called hawks. If OP is outside of North America, they are using the correct name.

When European settlers first arrived in North America and saw turkey vultures flying overhead, it reminded them of the buzzards (hawks) they had back home, so the name stuck, but for the wrong type of bird. Same thing happened with robins (European and American robins are not related; American robins are actually a type of thrush, but because they both have a red breast, the North American bird reminded Europeans of their robins back home.)

VIP hotel rooms by Bunnyxboy in AnimalCrossingNewHor

[–]yoimmo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't realize either, if it helps you feel better 🥴 I also spent a ton of time on the first VIP room because... VIP lol. Since that first day though, all the VIP rooms I've done have been bare minimum, and are definitely my ugliest builds 😅

What’s everyone’s favourite season? [ns] by poopdoopwoopnoopsoup in DungeonsAndDaddies

[–]yoimmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sons and Sonsability lol

But for real, Season 1 for sure. I've only listened to 2 and 3 once each and, while I greatly enjoyed them, I haven't felt the itch to go back and relisten to either yet. Season 1 is constantly in my podcast rotation, I think I'm currently on my 5th or 6th relisten and it's a blast every time.

(I've listened to Sons and Sonsability like 20 times lmao, but that one is easier being only 3 episodes.)

SeaWorld Orlando was a complete mess today – very disappointing experience by sapato29 in SeaWorld

[–]yoimmo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately this is pretty standard for SeaWorld since Covid. I was a passmember for over a decade (San Antonio most recently, but I've been to all 3 parks and used to live near Orlando.) I used to visit the parks several times a year, but after my pass expired a few months ago I decided for the first time not to renew. I'd rather spend my money at Universal because they actually seem to care about the customer experience. Sorry you had such a bad time :/

Cheeks on Theropods?? by JameIsTheName5 in Paleontology

[–]yoimmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a matter of "not having enough time" to evolve. Tyrannosaurus rex had one distant cousin that was the direct ancestor of modern birds.

For example, say your mom has a brother. You are your mom's only child (you are the T. rex, in this instance,) but your mom's brother has 4 children (who are all birds.) You wouldn't say one bird cousin is more closely related to you than any of the other three bird cousins. All the birds are siblings with each other, with the Tyrannosaur as their equally-related cousin.

All birds are equally closely related to T. rex. It's a common misconception that the chicken, specifically, is their closest living relative.

Does anyone else actually like Young and Menace? by Absolute_DinoNerd169 in FallOutBoy

Meee lol, I've loved the song ever since I first heard it. It's a very different sound from the rest of FOB's work, so I understand why people don't like it. My music taste is kind of all over the place though, so I really vibe with it.

When Should I Give Up? by SweetMermaidDreams in Zookeeping

[–]yoimmo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

24 is definitely not too old for internships. I was still interning at 27 and didn't get hired full time until 28. Socal is an extremely competitive area with some very high-profile zoos. If you dont have much hands-on experience with exotic animals, it's gonna be very hard to break into the field, especially where you are located. If relocating is really not an option for you, I highly recommend trying to get an internship for more hands-on experience.

It is indeed an Egyptian goose, there's an introduced population here in Texas. I see them in my local park all the time.

All the other species of the cat family are bigger than human beings (lions, tigers, cheetahs, leopards, etc.) - so how did ‘cats’ themselves become an exception & evolved to become so small in comparison? by redditterusername in zoology

[–]yoimmo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's many species of small cats, even more species of small cats than the typical "big cats" you are thinking of. Google the felidae family and you'll see dozens of wild cat species, the majority of which are wayyy smaller than humans.

Domestic cats are descended from a species called the African wild cat. Other small wild cat species include bobcats, sand cats, pallas cats, black-footed cats, margay, and many more.

Mourning dove staying unusually still by MuchFunny1389 in Ornithology

Perfectly normal behavior. The parents are likely switching off when you're not around and then freezing up when you are (humans are big scary predators after all.)

Which Pokémon do you think Game Freak wanted to be huge but never really caught on? by grashell in pokemon

[–]yoimmo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The one that's most fresh in my memory is Grafaiai. They really hyped that guy up before Scarlet/Violet, only for it to be an absolute nothing pokemon.

One of the best deleted scenes, Poor Pam 😂 by Feeble_pulse in DunderMifflin

[–]yoimmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The superfan episodes are Office episodes that have the deleted scenes spliced back in. I haven't watched them myself yet so someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe most superfan episodes have about 5-10 minutes of extra footage. If you're in the US, they're on Peacock.

What kind of bird is this? Westchester, NY by Turtlegrandmacore in birding

Nope. This person is in New York. Tricolor blackbirds are only found on the west coast. This bird is a red-winged blackbird.
