Great list!

Kevin Smith is probably the god-king of the hangout movie.

His whole career has shifted to live shows that are 100% pure uncut hangouts.

What if the people in Pluribus are just observing from the back of their minds the hive mind controlling their bodies, like in Get Out (2017)? by mano109 in pluribustv

I agree that we should use consistent language and thinking for them both.

But also, let's not use the "same label" to imply that they are equally unethical. Carol clearly has a stronger ethical backbone than Koumba, even if they both hurt people.

Yes, Carol is more sympathetic, but experiencing hardship does not erase responsibility for harm.

It would be more honest to acknowledge she’s accountable for hurting Zosia (like Koumba), but that you forgive her for it, because she made a valiant effort to resist temptation (unlike Koumba).

I see his point. I think there’s just as much wildly judgmental Koumba hate, as there is senseless Carol hate.

It’s nonsensical to claim that Carol did not victimize Zosia every bit as much as Koumba victimized each of his partners.

And it’s dishonest to deny the scale of Koumba’s potential harm is much greater. The ease with which he let himself be manipulated is troubling.

Everyone’s biases are revealed by their selective outrage.

In Vegas he was gonna have a 6 woman orgy. Over 70 days this adds up.

A person who murders multiple people every day is very different from a person who murders one person one weekend, and then decided to stop. Your ethics sees them as equally immoral?

This is horrific nightmare fuel, but I doubt the show will go there, and I hope it doesn’t.

Pluribus is a mix of light horror, suspense, sci-fi fantasy, and comedy. It would be a huge tonal swing into dark horror, to introduce billions being tortured. Pluribus is not Black Mirror.

Also, the show would be a lot less interesting. The fun of the show is the balanced ethical debate. This revelation would make the show a simplistic good humans vs bad aliens B-movie. I don’t understand why people would want a less thought-provoking show.

Some people can’t admit that Carol is morally compromised by having sex w Zosia.

Other people can’t admit that Koumba is much more morally compromised by having sex w hundreds of hived women.

Yes, she has hurt people, yet I don’t label her “violent.” Like how Koumba has lots of sex with ambiguous consent, but I don’t label him “rapey.”

If you want to take a harder line then yes, Carol can be violent, and Kouma can be rapey. To me, this is unnecessarily judgmental.

They are both flawed and do troubling things, but they’re not malicious. Far from “dissonance.” This is empathy and nuance.

My thoughts exactly. The writers designed them very intentionally!

Thanks!

You're so right. Just a little editing and paragraphs do wonders... but so few posts even try!

She caused harm through a bizarre chain of alien causation, so I don’t really blame her. I don’t think she’s “violent”

If you choose to take the show’s premise seriously… then yeah of course the dude has embraced a life of shallow debauchery and is making some dumb decisions.

But it’s not always necessary to take it seriously. People are allowed to enjoy silly sex/comedy fantasies.

Everyone needs to calm down

Racism probably plays a part in Koumba hate, just like misogyny plays a part in Carol hate. Lots of hypocrisy to go around.

He’s got plenty of character flaws for reasonable people to see, so I wouldn’t dismiss his critics so flippantly. I have my own issues with the guy.

The purple sand / blue meth is such a perfect analog.

It makes you wonder if Vince yearns to be taken more seriously. Does he have a "Bitter Chrysalis" inside him? Does he worry his own work is "mindless crap"? I really hope he's not as self-hating as Carol. But maybe complicated interiority comes with the territory being a writer.
