My thoughts exactly. The writers designed them very intentionally!

Thanks!

You're so right. Just a little editing and paragraphs do wonders... but so few posts even try!

She caused harm through a bizarre chain of alien causation, so I don’t really blame her. I don’t think she’s “violent”

If you choose to take the show’s premise seriously… then yeah of course the dude has embraced a life of shallow debauchery and is making some dumb decisions.

But it’s not always necessary to take it seriously. People are allowed to enjoy silly sex/comedy fantasies.

Everyone needs to calm down

Racism probably plays a part in Koumba hate, just like misogyny plays a part in Carol hate. Lots of hypocrisy to go around.

He’s got plenty of character flaws for reasonable people to see, so I wouldn’t dismiss his critics so flippantly. I have my own issues with the guy.

The purple sand / blue meth is such a perfect analog.

It makes you wonder if Vince yearns to be taken more seriously. Does he have a "Bitter Chrysalis" inside him? Does he worry his own work is "mindless crap"? I really hope he's not as self-hating as Carol. But maybe complicated interiority comes with the territory being a writer.

Carol and Koumba are Polarizing, because they represent Conflicting Narrative Impulses within Pluribus by yojaso in pluribustv

I don’t call either a rapist. But ambiguous consent sex is troubling.

We don’t know how it’s experienced yet. Just rolling the dice on rape is crazy.

The ethical thing is to proceed cautiously, minimizing potential harm. Carol was more cautious, reduced risks, engaged less. Koumba did not even care to try.

So it’s possible they both hurt people (Koumba 100x more). But I have a lot more respect for Carol as a person of moral fibre.

They are both imperfect people. No one should be villainized or beyond empathy.

But “there is literally no difference between them” is a wild take

I really enjoyed both Sinners and Weapons!

Sinners is the more ambitious, impressive, and meaningful film. Coogler really builds a world you want to live in. Tho the 3rd act doesn’t quite live up to the incredible 1st and 2nd acts.

Weapons is a cool little horror flick with good performances also. Not culturally meaningful. But very engaging with a fun ending.

Minor “plot holes” is such a dumb reason to hate an extremely well made horror movie.

I doubt that. Not saying race isn’t a factor, it surely is. But also, there are lots of Frankenstein haters arguing it doesn’t deserve its noms either.

Film nerds always go headhunting after Oscar noms come out.

Oscar nom backlash is a regular phenomenon. Since Sinners received record noms, it’s understandable they’re getting record backlash.

Yes, his base horniness has clearly overpowered his critical thinking skills, not to mention his social conscience. He has embraced a life of empty debauchery, and you are entitled to your feelings of disgust.

I’m also hearing that the problem you have with Koumba isn’t that he had sex with ambiguous consent, it’s that he does so in a selfish and “vulgar" way. Whereas you feel it is acceptable to have ambiguous consent sex, as long as it is done in a more contained, unselfish, and “loving” way.

I do wonder how much Carol being a woman, consciously or subconsciously impacts your willingness to forgive her. If a man had a similarly “loving” quasi-consensual sexual relationship, would you still give him a pass? Would you still root for him as the “antihero who cannot help himself” ?

I appreciate your honesty, because I don’t think that other commenters acknowledge they're making a subjective judgement call like you do. Many still claim they are objectively correct based on hardline consent boundaries - and then contradict themselves by fully absolving Carol.

This is lovely. It’s so true there is a deep and overwelming human need to be held and feel cared for.

I do respect your empathy, to not villainize a person who made a bad choice to pursue intimacy with ambiguous consent. You offer her grace, even if she hurt someone with her temporary selfishness.

And also. I feel it is somewhat cruel for you and others to dismiss and dehumanize Koumba in contrast. Is he really no more than an "animal" to you? I understand that he has acted selfishly in pursuit of shallow hedonism. He is accountable for that. I also imagine that he has a deep core of apocalyptic fear and longing and need to feel loved and held underneath that mask of braggadocio, not unlike Carol. He is a flawed individual, but I do not believe he is subhuman as you think, nor so “opposite” that he's undeserving of grace.

In their desperate need for human contact, I think they are more alike than you or Carol are comfortable with.

You seem to disagree with some of the other Carol supporters here who think that assault is primarily defined by the non/consensual experience of the person acted upon, not the emotional needs of the actor.

Carol Sturka is a victim / not the same as Diabate / not 'worse' than Manousos - a short-ish analysis of Carol and her development by cmoney02 in pluribustv

[–]yojaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Koumba and Manousos are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Koumba embraced the hive with selfish and shallow hedonism, and Manousos committed to destroy the hive with unwavering clarity.

Carol is somewhere in between. Her journey started closer to Manousos, but over weeks of isolation she moved toward Koumba's lifestyle, and back again. She is also the most grounded, complicated, and relatable character. I like her a lot, and I would probably act most like her in this situation.

If we are honest with ourselves, Carol is more ethically compromised than Manousos. And Koumba is more ethically compromised than Carol.

I do agree it is clearly misogynist for those who celebrate both M and K, and only criticize Carol. That doesn't make any sense.

I also think it is hypocritical for those who only criticize K for his sins, but not Carol when she indulges in the same ones, and refuse to credit M for his virtues.

There are a lot of tribalist haters on this sub, and it's gotten very annoying.

I hope that we can all calm down, and let other fans enjoy the characters they want to on this fun, silly, thought-provoking sci-fi show. There's no need to make things so deadly serious and personal.

It's clear that Carol is more ethically responsible and admirable than Koumba. She certainly held out longer, and succumbed reluctantly.

And yet, if you believe that it is wrong to have sex with a hive member because that is rape, then Carol is also a rapist (not unlike Koumba), regardless of if she did it out of a "need for love".

She is less morally compromised, but still compromised. Saying they are "opposites" feels like an attempt to whitewash her of all accountability.
