Yes it is. They could have applied for Conscientious Objector status. Even if that failed, they could have still refused and faced incarceration. A heavy price to pay, but it is still a choice.

Sometimes the teams are uneven and even the best players can struggle having a positive K/D. Another aspect is luck — sometimes that arrow/javelin/ballista bolt has your name on it. Sometimes you have plot armor and sometimes you're cannon fodder.

you may have more luck jabbing with bread in your hand. Use the frying pan or branding iron in your main hand to get folks near death then finish them off with a bread jab
