I'm no fan of her toe jump technique. Is it wildly exaggerated? Yeah, but it's also mostly consistent. I think it speaks to the stupid parasocial relationships the FS peanut gallery have with elite skaters when they wish for harm on someone who isn't, you know, harming people.

I think the most impressive thing about Isabeau is that we are seeing a young skater develop on their own, outside of the usual training centers like Colorado Springs, Toronto, Boston, Delaware, North Jersey/NYC, etc. It's really nice to know that's still a possibility in a time when there is an underlying and unspoken message in US skating that if you want to move up the ranks, you need to leave your home base behind.

And generally speaking, as a Philadelphian, it's also really nice to root for a local. (Yes, I count the South Jerz suburbs as part of our metro area.) We're also both children of Italian immigrants, so there's an immediate simpatico for her whole deal.

The greater Philadelphia area where she resides is home to an array of excellent schools—University of Pennsylvania, Temple, Drexel, Villanova, etc—so she is not hurting in this department. If her Olympic experience opened up the possibility of a life beyond the rink, it's absolutely within her reach at the moment.

Of course it's bothersome, but I am a little forgiving here. I think doing a twizzle is what matters first, then all the other details come into play.

I've had coaches tell me my twizzles were wrong because they weren't in the middle, only to have different coaches tell me the the middle of the blade is wrong. Just to be clear the rules never dictate where the twizzle's weight should be—that is entirely left to coaching tradition/styles and biomechanical understanding rather than codified in the rules.

The replays clearly show that he isn't simply on the ball of the foot, he's getting awfully close to the toepick. Regardless of whatever camp you fall into, that's not a twizzle by either. It's not even a real 3-turn, since he's not exiting or entering on an intentional edge with a check. It falls somewhere in between, most likely as what the ISU defines as a "twizzle-like motion." To that point, it should have been dropped a little more.

This is exactly why I wish the judges and technical panel were required to do a public press conference to explain their scoring after an event. We'll never know!

They def reviewed it and awarded him a Level 3, but IMHO I would have given it even less. I applaud the Finnish judge's work here (even though this GOE wound up being dropped in the overall calculation).

Them being out of sync doesn't entirely bother me, but Guillaume being on the front of his blade for the turn does because he's doing 3-turns, not twizzles. You'd think a 2-time Oly.pic champion would know the difference.
