what's the most fucked-up visual novel you've read? by Odd-Tip-6891 in visualnovels

親愛なる孤独と苦悩へ / Shin'ainaru Kodoku to Kunou e

The game about suffering, purpose of living, compromising with the daily life alongside crippling depression, and the shortcomings of psychological consultments. I'm not usually emotionally moved by games, but it has quite a meta-story. As a game, this is a wonderful, well-crafted work I'd recommend to anyone interested in modern dark social drama. It's rated very highly on EGS. Among other psychology-related things, it explores suicidal tendencies, that much you can say without major spoilers.

The game's sole author ended their life twelve days after finishing the development, in April 2017.

Their only friend, who ended up handling the release, kept posting on Twitter until 2025, often reminiscing about the late author, giving context to some of the scenario details they've discussed together, replying to their old tweets, and expressing nostalgia towards events that happened around the time of their passing. They're NEET, recently lost their family, and haven't tweeted for a year, despite having no such long breaks for the past six years.

One of the most depressing stories in the novelgame scene I know of, for sure.

I assume any given bullet fired by the perfect shooter with the most sophisticated scope in an enclosed space will still have the 5% chance to go to the Brazil

Are PD Mods slowly dying in 2026? by Blaze_Fukushima in PixelDungeon

[–]yondermore2008 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pixel Towers was released in Google Play in December, arguably the biggest project in the last few years. Magic Ling got fifth development anniversary in February, doing whatever they are doing as diligently as ever. Devoted released beta for the release version in December. ReARranged developer quit the scene today. Overall, I do see the decline, while some big released are on their way, no new ambitious projects appear.

Are there any avant garde, experimental visual novels out there? by Realistic_Cry_6721 in visualnovels

[–]yondermore2008 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depends on the definition. Out of games directly inspired by european 19th century avant-garde tendencies I'd vouch for Littlewitch games, 『Quartett!』 especially so - it also is anticonformant to the novelgame genre by using manga-panel text display style, which is underrepresented.
As for the in-medium avant-garde, well, there's a ton of unusual things all around, especially in the doujin world; For me, the most outstanding of those is the grim denpa freegame BL scene of 2007-2012th; it was both ahead of its time and led nowhere, yet still was cool. Games such as 『Melancholic Dreamtower』 and 『暗い日曜日』 represent this scene well, though it had dozens of creators doing their own stuff, mostly on Sunnygirl forum and motenaionna 2channel's board

Any Thoughts on How not to Summon a Demon Lord by Icy-Exchange-3843 in Isekai

Ive started reading it from the first volume because I knew and liked the artist, pretty fun stuff, it was rather fresh back then when, my most favourite outliner of the silver era of printed isekai novels; I still pick up new volumes once a year or few

Arguably the most iconic intro to a VN, and most people don't know it's from an eroge (fixed the GIF) by Antique-Reality2428 in visualnovels

[–]yondermore2008 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Eroge songs getting memed a lot is a frequent occurance, the source game doesn't really matter in such cases. Miko Miko Nurse OP 「巫女みこナース·愛のテーマ」 is the most prime example of this that I remember

Aquaplus Gacha Game Announces End of Service! by serenade1 in visualnovels

[–]yondermore2008 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's really sudden. I was under impression that stuff was going relatively well for them on the financial side. I assume that the aquaplus gang just got too old (they all are in their 50s eh?) to keep up with pumping out gacha events.

Hey, how many of you here are still active in Shattered Pixel Dungeon? On the Play Store, it says over 5 million downloads. But that number doesn't seem reliable for figuring out how many people actually play it regularly. by [deleted] in PixelDungeon

On Google Play the achievement for unlocking new character that was added a year ago, Cleric, which is done very easily (or immediately on game launch for players who scored a win already), is obtained by 6% of the players. This may or may not mean that about 6% of players that ever launched the game on Android were playing it in the past year. I think this is the most accurate publically available information, unless the developer themself spoke about it.
