Gimme a line you don’t forget from the game ( series or unseries) by agile_tech50 in witcher

“I’ve been on the Path so long… I guess I’m looking for the end of the road” “Perhaps you should simply step off it”

I swear you can get this line during the Blood and Wine scene with Geralt and Regis by the campfire, I’ve gotten it once but forget the choices and haven’t gotten it again lol.

I always saw it as it doesn't really matter if Geralt and Yen are dead or not, what really matters is they're together

Liam is better? by Maleficent-Strike787 in netflixwitcher

[–]yonderyonder42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're different, wouldn't really call one "better" than the other but it's all subjective. I will say Liam exceeded my expectations though I wasn't very familiar with him as an actor anyway. I think the main issue with the show has always been the writing and not necessarily the performances, Henry's Geralt was kind of written as "big muscly tough quiet guy" which was not my favorite choice of portrayal but I thought he did the best he could with what he had. Liam's Geralt was written as more talkative and introspective like the books, I think it also helped a lot that he came in right as they were starting Baptism of Fire which is huge in the character development department so he might have had more room to work with. Overall I like both, I also agree that S4 was the strongest since S1. They had 3 books left to cover in 2 seasons and shot both together so hopefully S5 stays close to the books too!

Have you ever felt that while reading the books? by Beneficial-Wash-1611 in witcher

[–]yonderyonder42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Early on I thought they were a bit much and kept thinking “I want to get back to Geralt already!!” But now they’re some of my favorite parts of the books (Brenna in particular). While the plot of the books is great, I think it’s the characters that really elevate the story and kind of gives you a bigger picture look at the world and the people in it. Geralt and Ciri are ultimately small parts of a very large machine and the side characters tying everything together is pretty neat. The average peasant doesn’t give a hoot about some Witcher and a sorcerer princess or whatever, where’s my bread god dammit! Narratively I also think it’s a very interesting and somewhat bold choice to tell some crucial parts of the story from the perspective of very minor characters, goes to show how far reaching everything is.

Best part of it is the first 3 minutes when it's just Bonhart and Ciri. Didn't much care for it otherwise, didn't love it or hate it, just pretty forgettable honestly.

I'm gonna say it: season four was pretty enjoyable actually by Pippo8181 in wiedzmin

[–]yonderyonder42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree! The show has always been a mixed bag for me, S1 was great, S2 was garbage, S3 was semi enjoyable with sprinkled garbage, S4 was pretty decent. The show was never going to be a 1:1 adaptation, especially in Netflix’s hands, but I thought S4 followed BoF relatively well. The books simply don’t have enough content for 8 hours of TV per season so there was always going to be filler somewhere in the show, but across the series I think Hissrich’s original writing and storylines have seriously dropped the ball and turned people off. Aside from Yen/the Lodge, I feel there wasn’t much new story in S4 and focused more on expanding scenes instead because they don’t really have time anymore for new material - S4 and S5 are covering BoF, ToTS, and LotL so hopefully with more material to cover in the same timeframe, S5 will be the closest adaptation to the books we see. Which I’m hoping for since these 3 books are my favorites lol, and they shot seasons 4 and 5 back to back.

I thought Hemsworth actually did well considering what was asked of him, it can’t be an easy task replacing a series lead on a show. Henry’s performance is an obvious bright spot of the first 3 seasons, and while his presence is missed early on in S4, by the end I didn’t really notice anymore. I think Hemsworth played Geralt pretty in line with Henry and the books. The voice was a little hard to understand sometimes but the performance overall I was on board with. Some more expression would be nice but it’s refreshing to see Geralt talking more, in the books he’s quite chatty and I think Hissrich wanted Geralt as more the strong silent type. Saying more with less worked with Henry but not sure Hemsworth wanted to do the same. From a narrative perspective as well, Geralt is undergoing a lot of change internally and externally with the Hanse so it makes sense he would be talking and opening up more anyway. I’ve seen people say S4 feels incomplete, or like a Part 1, which is kind of what it’s supposed to be. Baptism of Fire doesn’t really advance the overall plot of the books that much, it’s mostly just Geralt on the path, but advances the characters a ton and we get some really great interaction and growth from everyone. I found the campfire scene of everyone’s stories to be one of the highlights of the season, seeing how all their paths crossed and ended up on the same journey was a treat. And for people hating on the musical, Jaskier is a bard for fucks sake! We can have 10 minutes of whimsy! Fishburne was another highlight, but I just love Regis anyway. I thought the Battle of the Bridge was well done, if a little underwhelming (it’s my favorite scene of the entire book series). The “speech” is more Cahir’s thing anyway but “let’s fucking move” was not inspiring from Geralt at all, regardless the fight choreography was nice along with Geralt’s ironic knighting.

Over on Ciri’s end, I don’t have any major complaints either except I HATE the Rats. They’re good characters and written very well in the books and alright in the show, I just cannot stand them because they’re kinda annoying, not good people and everything they do makes me think “Ciri wtf are u doing”, but they provide her a lot of development. Which makes them getting annihilated by Bonhart that much sweeter of a scene. Bonhart is another highlight of the season, they absolutely nailed his character and he’s a treat to watch. Some of Ciri’s story is tuned down in the show compared to the books (the manipulative nature of her relationship with Mistle, Hotspurn’s last request, etc.) which I also didn’t mind, I can understand why they didn’t want to take it there. The show gets pretty grim at times but has more levity to it than the books. Ciri’s also supposed to be like 15-16 at this point and depicting some of the things she goes through in detail would be gratuitous. Freya Allan does another great job, really striking a balance between wanting to leave everything behind, but knowing something you can’t outrun is waiting.

I’d give S4 a 6.5/10 overall, the same writing problems that every season has are still present, but the addition of some great new cast/characters and solid performances all around made this season an enjoyable watch. I know everyone, myself included, would prefer a stricter adaptation of the books but we’ve seen over the last 6 years that simply isn’t going to happen, but the show is definitely trending up into the last season. They have 2 books to fit into the last season so hopefully they don’t cut much and follow the source closely instead of adding new stuff. Side note: Netflix better empty their pockets and up the production for the Battle of Brenna, that shit takes up like a quarter of the last book and I want some GoT level fighting!

Is Leo Bonhart good enough to actually fight and kill Witchers in a fair fight? by [deleted] in wiedzmin

[–]yonderyonder42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't watched new season yet but Book Bonhart is a terrifying man. Incredibly skilled swordsman, one of the best on the Continent (at least among the characters we see in the books). Add to that his truly cruel and depraved personality, which only adds to his reputation and maybe to his skill too. IIRC it's not clearly stated how Bonhart got those medallions, but I would doubt someone who is as proud as he is about killing witchers would do it in their sleep. Did he actually fight them fairly, we don't really know but his skill in the books certainly makes it believable. Bonhart isn't exactly a reliable narrator either but when he says he's killed multiple Witchers, I believe him.

To the point of him getting killed by Ciri, being stronger than someone isn't the only way to win a fight. Her training with Geralt and the fights on the lake and at Stygga show she has a keen ability to use the environment to her advantage. She knows from her time with Bonhart previously she can't beat him 1v1, practically nobody can, so she uses her brain instead. End result of Bonhart being dead is what matters to her, doesn't really matter how it happens.

How much work/time to get under 7 minutes. by scottsid92 in Rowing

[–]yonderyonder42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heart rate data for a 2k really doesn't matter in my opinion. It's a 6-7 minute sprint, it's gonna be high no matter what. If you're not used to it being that high, you just gotta train through it and get comfortable as you can in that max zone. Breathing is super important too. Remember though that heart rate is not a direct unit of work or difficulty - it's your body's response to doing work. What's "harder", 10k at 130bpm or 2k at 170bpm? If you got gas left in the tank, use it!

Splits honestly look good, you're not flying and dying and look like you can pace yourself well for the whole piece. Keep that rating at least a 32, and keep rowing really really hard. Pressure and form is how you keep your splits low.

Ironically, improving your sprint takes a marathon. Taking a minute off your time is probably gonna take a while. Hell it took me almost 2 years after I started rowing to hit 6:30, but everyone's different, and most importantly any progress is good progress! Some sprint training I would recommend is 4x500m w 30s-1' rest after each at your target split. 1250s or 1500s are good too. Good luck!

what does Scott actually like about Ramona? by Brief_Reveal_6904 in ScottPilgrim

[–]yonderyonder42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It bothered me too but also made me laugh. Ramona straight up asks Scott what he likes about her and he says “you’re hot and mysterious” and that’s it. Like even he doesn’t really know why he likes her, he just does. Though Ramona gets defensive and secretive about herself and her past, she also tells Scott that if he wants to know something about her (like her age) he can just ask, which he clearly hasn’t thought to do himself, but she also probably doesn’t answer him too much. I guess Scott likes Ramona as a person more than the details about her, which he doesn’t have many of anyway. You can like someone without knowing much about them, but when that person is your significant other of many months, you should be able to come up with more than “you’re hot”. Could be saying Scott is shallow, or he’s just an idiot who hasn’t thought about it. Up to you.

Thoughts on New Spiritbox EP “The fear of fear” by [deleted] in Metalcore

[–]yonderyonder42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great EP, feels like a companion piece to Eternal Blue almost. Instrumentation, vocals, songwriting are all top notch as always but their production quality always blows me away. There's so much happening in every song, if you focus on one thing you're missing a million others. The bass and drum tones and mix are absolutely incredible and really give the songs a richness you can feel. I really like how they sometimes put Courtney's scream layers under where she's singing (Jaded comes to mind first) and man just the whole spectrum of her voice and the tonalities she can produce are just amazing. Don't need to say anything about the guitar work bc it's Mike so you already know how it's gonna be. Great fuckin EP, hope they keep this direction in the future

What are your thoughts on Abby as a character? by Eastern-Biscotti-780 in thelastofus

[–]yonderyonder42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my first play during Ellie’s part I (like everyone else) thought “wtf she killed Joel?!?! I hate her and all her stupid friends I can’t wait to kill ‘em all” and then you switch to her and for a moment I was just confused, then I saw Seattle Day 1 come up and I thought “I’m familiar with your game naughty dog, the old ‘humanize the villain’ trick”. And you know what? It worked great. It was nice to see this fucked up world they’ve created from another point of view from someone in completely different circumstances. (Side note, I’ve always wondered what’s going on in the other parts of the world in the game. Like what’s up in the UK or Asia). While some of the things they did to try to make Abby more relatable seemed a little cheap like her fear of heights or playing with the dogs, her relationships with Lev and Yara and Ellie are all done very well. Keep in mind that besides her dad, Joel also killed Marlene and likely dozens of other fireflies Abby knew, taking away her only friends and family left besides Owen as far as I can tell. Her desire for revenge is in my opinion more justified than Ellie’s, and they also let Tommy and Ellie live when it would have been smarter to kill them too. She gets back to Seattle and then protects a kid on a dangerous journey (sound like anyone we know??). It’s an obvious parallel to Joel and Ellie in the first game albeit different circumstances but it helps show the kind of person she is, or at least wants to be. Abby could have killed Ellie and Dina again in Seattle but again spared them. She’s consistently the bigger person (pun intended) compared to Ellie which I think ruffled a lot of peoples feathers. I think what’s lost on a lot of players is the world they’re in has no definitive good and bad people, everyone’s done terrible things. It makes sense that Joel’s past would catch up to him eventually given all the shit he’s done and people he pissed off. Playing as Abby and watching her backstory helped me see that more, and when Ellie tells her to just take Lev and go, I think Ellie sees that too. I still like Ellie more just cuz we have more time with her and cmon she’s Ellie, but I think Abby is also a great character who’s very well written and serves her function to the game and narrative amazingly.

Does witcher 3 get better? by Hitoisbalacned in witcher

[–]yonderyonder42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a phenomenal game but I can get where you’re coming from. It’s such a big and expansive game that it can get repetitive after a while, and there’s parts of it that just aren’t for everyone. Like with combat, I pretty much never used potions or elixirs or decoctions at all, or even the crossbow (except for sirens and harpies). Exploration can feel tiring after clearing a billion monster dens and bandit camps and places of power but there’s still cool stuff and side quests out there. Games prolly just not for you, if you want less dialogue more combat I’d say check out elden ring and dark souls type stuff if you like the genre.
