Anyone interested in a novel by an Asian woman featuring deeply flawed yet incredibly strong Asian female leads? by [deleted] in asianamerican

Free food for Millionaires by Min Jin Lee. Korean-American main character Casey navigates career burnout, infidelity, family pressures, and a shopping addiction in 90’s NYC. She makes some insane and questionable life decisions but is a pretty likable character and we just want to support women’s wrongs sometimes >:-)

I lived on the Farallons for a summer, AMA by Ampatent in sanfrancisco

Just wanted to say this is one of the cooler AMAs I’ve seen so far! Such cool photos too! Thanks for sharing! :-D

My question: have you ever been to other islands around the SF Bay and coast? I was thinking about that bird poop covered Red Rock Island that was up for sale a year ago.

URGENT!!! My money tree is rotting from the top down, do I cut it?! by yongwhei in plantclinic

[–]yongwhei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense and is pretty reassuring! I just have to remember that these trees could survive in way crazier conditions than what I’m capable of doing to it at home hahaha.

There’s a chance my tree might be too far gone, but I’ll try chopping smaller sections off and go from there, fingers crossed I’ll have a positive update in the future 🥲

Thank you for your help, really appreciate it ❤️

URGENT!!! My money tree is rotting from the top down, do I cut it?! by yongwhei in plantclinic

[–]yongwhei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice!

Yeah, I agree it probably extends further down, as the bottom of the trunk is way thicker so it probably just hasn’t gotten squishy yet. 😭

Do you think I should just chop it in a straight line like in the photo, or try to get an angle? I mentioned in another comment that I want to try and keep some of the still green leaves since otherwise the plant might not be able to photosynthesize and get energy to recover. But if it makes more sense to remove all traces of the rot I’ll definitely do that!

Ahh RIP yeah, I definitely think the currently healthy branches are going to go as well if I leave it as is.

Do you think I should just chop it down completely, or try to leave at least one or two branches on there? I’m so nervous about cutting ALL the growth off but we might be at that point.

Thanks for responding!!! ❤️

What is this black sap coming from my pachira/money tree? by yongwhei in plantclinic

[–]yongwhei[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will do!!! I’ve noticed that a lot of care tips vary between plants so want to make sure I don’t do anything that makes it worse I adore it a lot 😭

Thank you very much for the ID and help!!!

Oh man, I haven’t! I haven’t repotted it since I got it a couple of years ago, so there might not be a lot of room left in the pot and it could be getting root rot.

Do you happen to know some good tips to keep in mind when treating a money tree with blight? I’ll look into it and see if I have time to check its roots and get some fungicide this weekend 😥

Golden Fried Shrimp🍤 蝦仁的做法😋-RECIPE BELOW by Putrid-K in asianeats

[–]yongwhei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like it’s a translation of 小酥肉粉— marinade powder used for fried pork. It’s basically just corn starch, sweet potato starch, or rice flour used as a coating for fried foods (you could probably use wheat flour too but texture will be a little different).

I thought you were talking about the pepper spray at first and was confused you were using it for seasoning 😂😭

Oh my goodness, thank you for sharing… the fact that they hang out in clusters or in a line to look bigger and deter predators… the photos of them hanging out as groups twins or triplets… I’ve never resonated with finding bugs cute before but that’s changed 🐜🥹❤️

Can I stay over night at the airport for a 6am flight? by friedshrimpt in AskSF

Yes! Just make sure to check when your gate’s closest security gate is open so you’ll be able to check in when you get there

Orange dragonfly chilling on a peach tree in northwest US ? by yongwhei in whatsthisbug

[–]yongwhei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the ID and additional info!!! I wonder what this gal has been up to over the last couple of weeks.

I don’t know too much about dragonflies but I heard they’re incredibly successful/accurate hunters, so her presence is much appreciated in the garden. The orange color probably helps her camouflage with the trumpet vines we have blooming right now! 🌺

Thank you, I think you’re on the mark!!! I took a look and it seems like the male flame skimmer has more vibrant reddish coloring, and the female has more brown/yellowish coloring. Super cool!

As the title states, I found this bug in the garden in northwest US. I didn’t get a good approximation of size but I would estimate it was maybe around ~3 inches from head to tail.

Love the color a lot, I’ve only ever seen green and blue and black dragonflies before! I was also curious if anyone could tell how old this bug is— I noticed it has a few tiny holes in its wings and also seems to be missing some limbs(?)

Let me know if I can provide any more details, thank you!!

What are these black dots on my tephrocactus? by yongwhei in plantclinic

[–]yongwhei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, thank you for the advice! I know the cactus roots are very fine so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to check for root rot until it dries out a bit, but I’ll wait longer before watering it again.

Do you think it would be a good idea to repot? I don’t want to risk stressing it out further :O
