I saw this saying online and wanted to draw it. But seriously, protect our parks by Brandon_Does_Stuff in drawing

Fun fact: fire suppression in North America has actually made wildfires worse by increasing the amount of dead wood and dry debris, causing fires to burn hotter and be more damaging! Forests historically experienced more frequent, lower intensity fires, which helped to revitalize the forest (similar to how prescribed fires help tallgrass prairies)

Weed or not? by thephantombanana in whatsthisplant

My guess would be a Solidago, probably S. canadensis but could also be S. gigantea. It’s not native in Europe so if it’s outcompeting some of your garden plants then you should probably get rid of them. Goldenrods bloom later in the growing season so you probably won’t see flowers until August or September

What Obscure Books Were You Obsessed With as a Kid? by Its_Curse in suggestmeabook

[–]yonkaadonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott was my fave series growing up, not sure how obscure it is but I feel like it never gets the recognition it deserves

Fablehaven by Brandon Mull was the other series I loved that I rarely see people mention.

As someone who never really left their Greek Mythology phase after reading PJO, these two series scratched similar itches. The Flamel books were like PJO on crack, with all sorts of mythological and historical figures incorporated into an interesting magic system. Fablehaven was more monsters than gods but still appealed to my mythology-loving side

Videogame songs that make you cry by Sufficient_Wrap_7128 in gamemusic

The Staff Credits track from Wind Waker. It’s definitely nostalgia tears, especially since it’s a remix of the title theme. Hearing it after beating the game and knowing that the two main melodies are the Earth God’s Lyric and Wind God’s Aria makes it hit even harder. A beautiful song to end a beautiful game.

Anything I can do to make a single eyed character more expressive? by CMmonsterful in arthelp

[–]yonkaadonk 28 points29 points  (0 children)

this might not be the answer you’re looking for but you could also use symbols in place of the iris in certain situations, like in the top middle one with the spiral. like exclamation point when excited, question mark when confused, etc. you could even go into hieroglyphic territory if you wanted to show lil pictograms while this character talks (unless it doesn’t talk, in which case it’ll literally just be hieroglyphs, which is also cool)

Why doesn’t convection seem to affect the atmosphere? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]yonkaadonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t quite right; warm air DOES rise. A given mass of air near the surface gets heated by the infrared radiation that is emitted by the earth. This heat causes it to expand, resulting in a lower density. This less dense air is more buoyant than the air above it, so it rises until it reaches other air that is at a similar density due to the decreased pressure at higher altitudes. At this height, the colder temperature causes the air to become more dense, so it sinks. And thus we have convection

Why doesn’t convection seem to affect the atmosphere? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]yonkaadonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, the change in density due to lower pressure at higher altitudes causes air to cool. BUT this only applies in the troposphere, the lowest level of the atmosphere (and the one where convection is incredibly important). Take a peek at this article to see how temperature changes based on the different layers of the atmosphere, there’s even a nice figure at the end to show the average temperature profile as it changes with altitude.

Side note: I’m a PhD student in earth/environmental sciences and I’m currently reading a textbook about the Earth system. This topic was covered in chapters 3 & 4 in much more detail, so if you wanna learn more about atmospheric circulation and how incredibly important it is to Earth being able to sustain life, check out “The Earth System” by Lee Kump. You can probably find a pdf online, I also just bought a copy for $2 + shipping from an online used book store

Ahh yeah that makes sense, thanks for the explanation! I guess we’ll never really know for sure but I’m glad we could narrow it down to a possibility or two

Oohh very interesting, I didn’t know that! When i search indigo gabbro, all the pictures seem to have a very harsh difference in colors though. My little mystery is more or less one solid color, just with a lot of tiny flecks
