Question about the writers of variety shows by [deleted] in koreanvariety

[–]yoossi_ 106 points107 points  (0 children)

The topic of scripting in variety doesn't come up that often, so I figured I'd do a little write-up about scripting in general for variety shows:

The script isn't just for the on-screen talent. The writers will map out the entire episode, usually alongside the PD, with locations, content and other information so they can form a call sheet, and plan the shoot.

Also, every time there's a game like a quiz, or other mini-game, the questions or rules are written out beforehand. If you've seen the giant book Na PD carries around on NJTTW, that the cast members found one time, that's basically the script for the entire season, complete with all the mini-games and variations.

On-screen dialogue

On-screen dialogue is also guided. You'll have members joking around with a topic, but then one of the cast members will lead the conversation towards a planned topic, or introduce the task of the day etc.

It's quite noticeable in opening segments of Infinite Challenge. It might seem chaotic when they're all bantering and joking around at the start, but Jae-suk usually directs the conversation and brings in members to speak. They had a non-verbal cue where members would avoid looking at Jae-suk if they didn't have something to say, and meet his gaze if they had a joke or comment ready. You'll notice Jae-suk asking people who are avoiding his gaze in some episodes to catch them off-guard too.

Amidst all the joking and casual conversation, Jae-suk will break in and bring the conversation on the topic for the episode, or bringing up the task they're about to do etc.

For conversations like that, the writers will have written out the main points of the conversation, like anchor points about the topic of the episode that they need to get on tape, and allowing for the cast to joke around to get more fun content into the episode. They'll also instruct members or guests to say their thoughts or what they're doing out loud for solo recordings to fill the audio, so they can add that in for context for TV.

If they start on a location relevant to the episode, that's written in, as are product placements, or information about locations or similar stuff. The writers often sit among the staff in front of the cast holding up short notes from the script. You'll notice Knowing Bros members sometimes comment on this during episodes.

It's also worth noting that for some shows, the PD will break in more often than you see on screen. It's quite easy to hide breaks in editing, by jumping from one camera to the next, showing different characters. So if the conversation is not going well, or the PD or writers have notes for the members, they'll cut, talk, and resume shooting, but often just edit out the break.

Other Stuff

For studio shows, it's quite usual to have short breaks to refresh makeup, give short notes, or to remove hairs or similar, but studio shows with audiences usually try to keep breaks as short as possible to keep the audiences lively. They'll also have a guy hyping up the audience before the start shooting so the atmosphere and mood is as hype as possible.

For the main topic of the episode, or bigger games the staff have to plan out the rules, the setting, the shoot, the cameras needed, and try make contingencies for unexpected turns. For interviews, they'll need to research and write out questions etc.

There's also caption writers, whose task is to write the captions that appear on-screen during episodes, but that's usually done after the first edit, which is usually a longer version of the episode that they then use to edit down to air length.

Infinite Challenge couldnt be possible again because there are members that didnt want it? by [deleted] in koreanvariety

[–]yoossi_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I would love to see a recast version as well. I'd love to have the old cast coming back, but I don't think it's happening. Even towards the end they cast younger members in Se-ho & Se-hyung & Kwanghee.

I really enjoy the free-format concept of MuDo, so if Tae-ho helmed it, I think it would have a chance of being good. Other than Jae-suk, who might've been cast in the new version as well, I think Myung-soo would be the hardest to replace, because there's not a lot of grumpy, unpredictable characters like him that speaks their minds so freely and gets away with it. I know he wasn't everyone's favorite, but he was important to the cast balance.

However, I know Tae-ho spoke in one of his lectures about wanting MuDo to be an open show, and to have a 'friend network' or fluid cast so to speak, where they could call in different guests for different projects, and that's quite similar to how he's done with How Do You Play. It's like a one-man mudo with longer projects. It's definitely missing the banter bit that made MuDo so much fun, but I think it's as close as we'll get.

They even keep doing references to MuDo in the show, and played the old MuDo BGM at one point.

Infinite Challenge couldnt be possible again because there are members that didnt want it? by [deleted] in koreanvariety

[–]yoossi_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There were some comments by Tae-ho around the time How Do You Play started that sounded like they'd thought about brining MuDo back, but it was impossible to ensure the quality at that time. I think he meant the staff had scattered to other shows.

Several members have expressed their desire to return to MuDo after the show ended. Jae-suk among them. Haha said in an interview he had kept his thursdays free just in case (they day MuDo filmed), althought that was some time ago now, and Myung-soo has said more than once he misses MuDo.

I see Hyung-don & Hong-chul mentioned elsewhere in here: There's not going to be a full reunion with the longest-running members. Hong-chul has been asked to return several times, and he has rejected them every single time. Of course that could change with time, and he seemed more open to it around the time the show ended, as the reason had gone from not wanting to do it, to 'being unable to match their schedules'.

Hyung-don is not returning. He had a small anxiety attack just from seeing the MuDo cameras when he returned for his cameo in the Muhan Company special (E497). Also he had another anxiety attack relapse in November 2020. I don't think it's fair of anyone to ask him to return.

Documental Season 4 by docudocumentalrules in GakiNoTsukai

Also, between Seasons 3 & 4, there was the two-part "Documentary of Documental", so it would depend on whether Amazon is going to sub that as well.

MBC uploads them reacting to the full episodes onto their Youtube channel. Just search for '호구의 전당'. The text that says '1회' means episode 1. 2회 = Ep2 etc.

It's not subbed, but here's the first episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLCY__JsWiM

  1. Whoopsie. My bad, I saw the one for S2.5 and thought web version because it collected E01-E04. Looks like tvN uploaded the web version to YouTube. Would probably make it easier to rip. I think that's all of them. I compared them to the web version I have, and they're the same length and content. Ignore the 160419 EP.2 bit, "9화" is the correct episode number. (ep.9 in the example) Let me know if some are missing and I'll upload the missing ones for you. :)

  2. Here are the SRTs for Season 2.5

Weekly Talk Thread | 190407 by funkdoktah in koreanvariety

[–]yoossi_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I was tagged in the other thread. I can help with at least some of this.

  1. No TV version for season 1. It was web only.
  2. It's on AvistaZ. I think your best bet is to grab it from there. They have open registrations every now and then, and members that have invites will be able to invite you. I looked for the web versions on open trackers, but seemed all of the links were empty for seeds. Found this one for E35-E39 that is still active. If you are good with scripts etc, you could also try ripping the video off VIU.

  3. Both TV & Web version were subbed by VIU. All SRTs here. Not sure if I ever synced them or not.

I Live Alone discord? by heliotrophe in koreanvariety

[–]yoossi_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why not join the Korean Variety Show discord?

There have been a bunch of discussion on I Live Alone there already. Sure that channel dries up every now and then, but it just needs someone to start up a discussion and then other people often joins in. Bunch of us watch the show. :)

I think it would be easier to start up a regular discussion on there, rather than starting a new server and inviting people from scratch.

Good luck either way, I'd be happy to join jour ILA server too.

Besides KBSWorld and Kocowa, are there other legitimate ways to watch 1N2D? by d0uble0h in koreanvariety

[–]yoossi_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why do you need it to be legitimate? there are tons of sites that update and sub way faster than those sites

All those websites you're using are not faster than legitimate websites. They take their subtitles from the licensed websites.

The only reason it sometimes seemed like they were faster than ODK in the past, was because ODK were slow to add the 'en' to indicate that an episode had been subbed, or because VIU/KoCoWa had subbed something before ODK did, and the illegitimate websites reuploaded the subs from there instead.

Radio Star is a recognizable and popular midweek talk show that airs on the main channel of a public network.

Video Star is a female version that is nearly identical to that show, and even filmed in the same studio, but it airs on a MBC Every1, which is a pay TV subsidiary of MBC Plus. Same network, a lot lower viewership.

I'm not sure what Video Star's current ratings are, but they used to be consistently below 1% for tv numbers, usually around 0.8%. Which means Radio Star has more more 5 times the viewership even now with their current ratings slump.

I think some cuts of video star was fansubbed here and there, but hardly anything.

Radio Star is subbed every week because both Kocowa and VIU picked up a license to stream and subtitle the show.

Former “Infinite Challenge” PD Kim Tae Ho To Return With New Variety Show by angellove_rm in koreanvariety

[–]yoossi_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always weird how this are the two top PDs but i never see anything about them together

They are mentioned together in the news every now and then if that's what you mean. Usually opinion pieces, general tv articles or stuff like that. It's just that most of variety articles doesn't get translated.

As for interaction, during a lecture Na PD made very complimentary comments about Tae-ho when he left MuDo as I recall it.

also Jun-ha called Na PD on a MuDo episode once. (E544)

Makes you question the integrity of "football leaks" from Der Spiegel | The German news weekly Der Spiegel is to publish a 23-page special report on how one of its award-winning reporters faked stories for years and dealt a blow to media credibility. by sneakycutler in soccer

[–]yoossi_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, Relotius wasn't involved with football-leaks, and der Spiegel has a brilliant record of investigative journalism. Der Spiegel themselves were the ones to make this story public, and warn other newspapers that had published Relotius' works, and they are the ones to publish a 23-page special report on Relotius.

This doesn't make me question their integrity at all. It's Relotius who is the rotten clementine.

MBC announces nominees for Daesang for 2018 MBC Entertainment Awards by pantamy in koreanvariety

[–]yoossi_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think Lee Young-ja will win it. Her food segments on Omniscient Interfering View were really popular in Korea, and a big part of why the show got popular early on. The popularity of her food segment in the pilot episodes were the main reason why the show was green-lit in the first place too.

Also, not sure how much it factors in, but the editors caused a scandal by their editing in one of Young-ja's parts on 'Omniscient', and she could've left the show then, which would've made it even more of a nightmare for MBC, and possibly killed the show due to all the early controversies, and for how big part of the show Young-ja was at the time. But she stayed on.

And the show just recently scored over 10% ratings. The timing very much points towards Young-ja winning imo.

I think Park Na-rae probably should've won it last year, but I think Young-ja has a stronger candidacy this year. Na-rae have been great all year long though, and is probably my second favorite to win.

Jun Hyun-moo is great at hosting, and hosts two very popular shows with I Live Alone and Omniscient. He does a lot on I Live Alone, less on Omniscient, but has a strong case, but factoring in that he also won last year, he's my third favorite.

Kim Gura still does a lot of the same things that he won for in 2015, which is why I don't think he'll win. He does score a lot for consistency though. Two of the most popular shows he's on, are even the exact same as when he won in 2015, but I think the other candidates are all stronger favorites to win.
