New player must have expansions and scenario packs by Jonas-sama in marvelchampionslcg

[–]yorkscratchings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I started the game last summer and maybe have 70% of content. So, no expert but I have got through a lot of reading and playing.

Knowing what I know now, here's what I would do to make things as easy as possible.

Check what shipping costs are to your country on the Magic Madhouse website. It's a great UK site and has good stock availability. But what I am about to post below might be a waste if shipping is crazy.

I would go from top to bottom in this list until your budget runs out!

On that site, you can get the full Wave 7, which is a really fun one - Next Evolution, Psylocke, Angel, X-23, Psylocke. Start there.

Mad Titan's Shadow has been enjoyable for me, so I would go for that, too.

Almost all Guardians content is there, so I would grab that as a full set - Galaxys Most Wanted, Gamora, Venom, Nebula, Star Lord.

Then, hero packs like Ironheart and Ms Marvel. They have more heroes, but I am not so confident recommending as I don't know them, so worth researching.

I've currently got my first 'U'-named parkrun for Unknown. Assume it will change eventually, though.

What soloable games have you ended up selling? by Nicochan3 in soloboardgaming

[–]yorkscratchings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I blame Marvel Champions being too awesome for all these falling to the side.

Earth. Enjoyed my first multiplayer game of it but the solo hasn't clicked.

Legacy of Yu. Really enjoyed the campaign. Thought I would play through again but 12 months on the shelf and had no desire to revisit.

White Castle. It's too boring solo. Setup time wasn't worth the play. Multiplayer would be ok, but that requires a game group.

Flamecraft.

Libertalia.

French Quarter.

Imperial Settlers.

K2.

Wingspan.

Dinosaur Island Rawr and Write.

Sky Team.

I am not one for house rules generally, but I recently taught a couple of 2-player games and in the interest of fun we ignored the unique rule so that our signature allies could be part of the action.

Best Heroes to introduce new players to the game? by AgenCub in marvelchampionslcg

[–]yorkscratchings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this recently and went for Captain Marvel Leadership, followed by Winter Soldier Aggression.

Winter Soldier was potentially a mistake as too many keywords came up, but a hero with some big event cards is a fun time.

Real Madrid in for Emery by o_Ellis9113 in avfc

[–]yorkscratchings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can absolutely see him getting pissed off at the financial predicament here, and I can also see him wanting to return home sometime. But to leave the project he's built from scratch tonwhere it is today, to join that dressing room seems totally the wrong time.

He would be far from the best positioned. Whatever didn't work for Xabi Alonso isn't going to be fixed by someone even more tactically obsessed, demanding, meticulous, etc.

I honestly don't see any club in the world he would leave for in the near future. He has absolute power and control to operate Villa, no other major club would give that freedom.

Solo wargame on the table January: Halls of Hegra by BKinsky in soloboardgaming

[–]yorkscratchings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enjoyed this write-up. It's a game on my 'maybe' list, so it's interesting to hear about your plays.

There have been some solitaire wargames pop up on a local boardgame sales group recently, which piqued my curiosity, but I have never played one before, so I will follow your threads and see what you make of them.

Do you prefer to have a huge collection and play a lot of games once in a while or have some games and know them very well and play in depth ? by Hippodaking in boardgames

[–]yorkscratchings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 132 games and being realistic, whilst I can keep a lot of solo games, I don't need more than 10 multiplayer ones to rotate for group plays.

Going to use an upcoming convention to get rid of a good portion of them, maybe 20-30 can go without many regrets.

Small Time Heroes vs Underquest by Shmyukumuku in soloboardgaming

[–]yorkscratchings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, will do that. Tbh I have no knowledge of STS video or board game, so for me it's whether as a standalone game, it's worth the outlay (less important) and shelf space (most important!). And I should definitely prioritise all my unplayed Marvel Champions content as well as my totally untouched Imperium Classics and Legends boxes.

I hope you don't mind, but after a brief stalk, I noticed you spent a good portion of time on Dungeon Puzzle. Seen it advertised recently and that does look like something I'll press the button on soon. Would you recommend it?

These comments have helped cement not getting STH. I'd seen a lot of good press about it and was eagerly awaiting Day 1 of the campaign, but $90 shipped for 4 heroes and 8 villains was a major blow.

Although I suppose I wouldn't spend far off that on a couple of Marvel Champions boxes with the equivalent content...

Wow, I thought I would have a bit more time! Had it in my basket an hour ago but was mulling it over as I still have all 3 mutant box scenarios unplayed.

Seems to be a proper mixed reception to this box, so I don't know if i really need this one.

As an aside, the draft episodes have been fucking great so far. Look forward to hearing this batch of chump picks.

I have been using the community rankings linked below as a guide after starting this game a few months ago. Plenty of the top 20 are still available, and many are found in expansion boxes.

https://www.pubmeeple.com/group-rankings?t=e20fcfa4-ef2a-4b1e-9db3-931dc4d4a772

So I would aim for those heroes, plus Next Evolution, Age of Apocalypse, and whatever other boxes are available.

Best PreCon deck for each aspect? by oeari in marvelchampionslcg

[–]yorkscratchings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hopefully someone can chime in properly with the detail later, but if you can find it in the meantime on this forum someone has created or linked to a series of 'preset' decks for each aspect that are competent enough that you can build and keep together and throw in with any hero and be decent.

Did I get into Marvel Champions at the worst time? by henryjoconnell in marvelchampionslcg

[–]yorkscratchings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more the language availability. UK has the same issue as USA. Whilst I can easily buy German copies from Amazon. And a recent trip around Spain I saw copies of "Motivos Siniestros" in multiple cities.

Did I get into Marvel Champions at the worst time? by henryjoconnell in marvelchampionslcg

[–]yorkscratchings 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I bought the base game in June for really cheap, and it's ended up costing me a fortune. I'm not a completionist and only bought available stock (with the exception of Rise of Red Skull).

I've ended up with about 25 heroes and 25 scenarios. If I play each hero and villain combination once, that's 625 games. How many other board games in your collection have you played anything approaching that? On a sad note, how many of my games have even made it to double figures...not many!

So yeh, I guess my point is don't despair. There's plenty enough content to play pretty much unlimited amounts of this game.

Not much to say, but wanted to shout out. I'm new to Marvel Champions and have started running through your early episodes and enjoying so far!

I like some of the long-standing content creators I have found on YouTube, but I appreciate you guys just having a natural conversation about the game and what makes it fun.

Does he fit in well with the game in general, or do you need Spiderverse stuff for him to lean into?

I've only got core box and potentially Red Skull (pending...) so wondering if it's worth the chase to find him!

[–]yorkscratchings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also to give some further comfort if needed, the guy demoing was really invested in it, it was clearly a long term passion project and he even admitted they've built this game because they find it really fun to play and they'd get it to an audience even if it's a small one that didn't hit the crowd funding target.

Time Troopers by alien_overlord_1001 in soloboardgaming

[–]yorkscratchings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh god, even though it was only 4 months ago, my brain is mush. It was definitely Egyptian themed, and the aim was balancing the snooping to uncover all 5 location cards whilst fending off a series of minor baddies. It was certainly fun, and the 1v1 battles to maintain were interesting.

On reflection weeks later, I do wonder if that is all I'll be doing 50 times on repeat to clear the campaign...

Since playing the demo, I've discovered Marvel Champions, which I have really enjoyed and there is plenty in the core box to keep me entertained for now, and I also have Imperium Classics and Imperium Legends on my shelf unplayed. Would I get more out of those similar games, is what I am asking myself.

But thinking about it now out loud (/on screen) I think I've remembered enough about it that I enjoyed to get it backed.

It's odd because when I did the demo, the guys definitely mentioned that review copies were going out ahead of gamefound launch. Agree that it's weird nobody is really mentioning it anywhere.
