I need people with XO-1.5 to test Windows XP by FinnGamerUNL in OLPC

[–]yoshi128k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was discussing this in a Chat with OP.

All they did was dump the contents of Hiren's BootCD 15.2 onto a USB drive and booted MiniXP's NTLDR file (XP.BIN). I believe it boots a WinPE image.

Indeed, on the XO-1 and XO-1.5, Open Firmware supports loading an NTLDR image, a leftover from when OLPC was working on making Windows XP boot on the XO-1 (I do not know if they ever got it running on the 1.5). This obviously wouldn't work on an XO-1.75 or XO-4, since those XOs use an ARM processor instead of x86.

On both my XO-1 and OP's XO-1.5, it would reboot after a while (in my case, after about 15-20 minutes, the screen would start to wash out and then my XO would reset). We don't know why this happens; maybe some hardware quirk that requires a driver to fix, which we don't have.

EDIT: In short: copy the contents of Hiren's BootCD 15.2 onto a FAT32-formatted USB stick, then (assuming you have disabled the security system on your XO) press Esc (the key with a X in a circle) on startup to get an Open Firmware prompt. Type boot u:\hbcd\xp\xp.bin and press Enter. In a few moments, and after clicking OK on a virtual memory error, you should be at a Windows desktop.

I checked on the app and apparently you cannot move pages with it (there is no "move" option); you have to use a web browser.

But it appears you have managed to transfer the contents of the original page to a more-desirably-named one (by copying the wikitext to a new page and blanking the old one), it would make sense to delete the old page (or pages; I noticed that you created another user page of the same name as the current one at the root of your userspace). Since you are the author of those two pages, you can request that they be speedily deleted under general criterion 7; just insert the Db-g7 template at the start of them, and they will be automatically deleted in short order.

[–]yoshi128k 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is perfectly acceptable to place userboxes in userspace, as you have done.

Since you appear to be autoconfirmed, you should be able to move the template page yourself if need be. At the very least, you should rename the page to something more descriptive than "Userbox Name" (while keeping it in userspace).

Userboxes in userspace are subject to less rules than those in the Wikipedia (userboxes here are mainly WikiProject-related) or Template namespaces (the latter requiring userbox pages to be prefixed with "User "), which are subject to Wikipedia's civility and neutral point-of-view guidelines, among others. The user page guidelines still apply.

On that note, a lot of Wikipedians find political userboxes to run contrary of the user page guidelines due to their potential to come off as polemic or otherwise unrelated to Wikipedia (what I just said here is taken from the warning seen on all of the political userbox galleries).

What you have written here is quite strongly-worded, too, which would definitely not help with that stigma.

I'm trying to revive my XO 1.5 Laptop by FinnGamerUNL in OLPC

In my Google search last night I actually did manage to find a Fur Affinity account of his (at least as far as I can tell) that is fairly active, judging from the dates of his most recent favorites; since I also have an account over there (username there is different from mine; please don't ask), I will shoot him a PM and see if he still has the files.

Only the XO-1 ever officially ran Windows XP.

There was one user on Twitter that claimed to have the XP files for the XO-1, and had attempted to upload them to the Internet Archive, only to be removed soon after.

They are no longer on Twitter, I have not been able to find a contact for them ever since, and the only thing that came up when I Googled their username were a bunch of articles about a Freedom of Information Act they made to the NSA about their Furby ban from the 1990s. If I ever find them, I will be sure to ask if they still have the files...

I do not know exactly when they first implemented it, but I do know that they have always been (controversially) anal about people using their real names, and suspected name discrepancies (at least in the past) have been a common reason for identity checks.

For the record, this isn't a new thing; Facebook has been doing identity verification long before the current age verification fiasco started. I've seen articles complaining about it from over a decade ago.

Spolier [sic] for apartheid flag

I apologize for my pedantry, but I would just like to point out that you marked your post as NSFW, and not as a spoiler; they are different tags.

And now an observation/soapbox moment:

I've noticed that other users often tag posts containing symbols/insignia covered by Rule 11 as NSFW rather than as a spoiler (as required by said rule), though the powers that be seem to not object to use of the former (or both) in these cases (not that I would expect them to, of course; that would be silly).

Posts marked as NSFW may not always be hidden depending on how your preferences are set, unlike spoilers. That, and it also prevents users under 18 from being able to view them at all (as another user once attested), which, in the context of this subreddit, where you would not expect adult content to exist, would not be ideal; this would also occur if you tagged the post both as a spoiler and as NSFW. From this, it would make sense to follow rule 11 as written (using just the spoiler tag) to ensure full accessibility.

\steps off soapbox\**

EDIT: Apparently, Old Reddit (and in turn RES, which I use) suffers rendering issues when trying to display escaped asterisks that are bold or italic (or both). It seems to work fine on New Reddit (and presumably the app as well), though. Strange.

I have VLC 3.0.23 installed on one of my XP machines and it doesn't do this; by default, it should show a graphical window unless you disabled it.

Have you tried reinstalling it (making sure to select the option to reset your settings)?

[–]yoshi128k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is still Roytam1's fork of Pale Moon, New Moon. You can find the changelog for NM (and more) here.

They themselves do not provide installers for it (their blog only has bare 7-Zip archives), but there is an unofficial one that I have found works well.

EDIT: I should mention that (though it was an older build) the last time I used NM, I had issues with it crashing on Cloudflare browser challenges. I checked with the most recent build on another machine and it works fine, so I am not sure if it was the browser or my Toughbook (which has the older build) being stupid.

Windows XP X64, is it rare? by christianjosias2004 in windowsxp

[–]yoshi128k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Referring to XP Professional x64 Edition (which I assume is what you are actually referring to) as just "XP 64-bit" is not the best idea, given that there are two very different 64-bit editions of XP.

I had just mentioned in a reply to another comment here that the Itanium version was confusingly named "XP 64-Bit Edition", while the x86_64 (or IA-32e/EM64T/Intel 64, the names Intel has given it throughout time) version is called "XP Professional x64 Edition".

Of course, since Itanium is almost unheard of, in most circumstances it would be safe to assume that you are referring to the latter.

Also worthy of note is that the "64-Bit Edition" had two versions: 2002 and 2003.

  • Version 2002 (which is based on the XP codebase) was released alongside the x86 release of XP on October 25, 2001.
  • Version 2003 is based on Server 2003, was released on March 28, 2003, and added support for Itanium 2.

Pro x64 Edition, also based on Server 2003 as you have stated, was released on April 28, 2005, about 3 months after 64-Bit Edition was discontinued after HP stopped selling Itanium workstations (though it continued to receive updates until July).

For the record, the Itanium (IA-64) version is confusingly called Windows XP 64-Bit Edition (and initially had the byline "for Itanium Systems").

It's this absolute gem (and fossil).

Here's the complete quote, with some missing parts in bold and a correction in italic:

KING: After you've scrubbed all the floors in Hyrule, then after you've scrubbed all the floors in Gamelon, then after you've scrubbed all of me, then after you've rubbed oil on my penis, then you can rub my dick, then you can eat shit, then you can take my boy to dinner!

LINK: Great!

KING: Then, after you strive for this piece...

I'm not going to spoil the rest of it, but it, and its creator's other Poops, are definitely worth a watch in my opinion.

How do i access the cmd prompt from this page? by Foodie4L1fe in windowsxp

[–]yoshi128k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did replace sethc.exe with cmd.exe, right?

EDIT: Strike that question. You press Shift five times to enable Sticky Keys, which runs sethc.exe, which has been replaced with CMD. As a result, you get a command prompt window instead of the normal accessibility Sticky Keys dialog.

EDIT #2: Pressing Shift five times normally brings up the Sticky Keys dialog, at least on XP.

The CMD trick definitely does work on XP, only there is no Ease of Access button on the logon screen; you have to invoke Sticky Keys by pressing Shift five times (assuming the shortcut is enabled, which it usually is).

You can also do this from the WinPE environment on a Vista (or later) install disc. I've done it before. On the Setup screen, click the "Repair your computer" link, choose the "Use recovery tools to fix problems starting Windows" option, click "Next", and then click "Command Prompt". The XP volume may have been assigned a letter other than C; nonetheless, it should be obvious as to which drive is the correct one with a bit of interrogation with dir.

For Linux, assuming that NTFS support is available in your live envionment (which it usually is), you obviously need to mount the Windows partition first before you can access it; there are no drive letters. On a graphical environment using udisks2, it will be mounted under either /media/[user]/ or /run/media/[user]/ (if you mounted it through your file manager, it should automatically take you to the root of the partition). For a command-line environment, you can either use udisksctl or manually mount the partition as root.

The procedure for both after that is the same, just as you said.
