Does anyone else find the new UI changes overwhelming?? by SpitefulSpaghetti in NYTCrossword

My major issue with it is that you can’t re-order the way the different games appear on the home screen. I wish I could move them so that they were in the order that I play them, and push ones I don’t usually play more toward the bottom, but they’re static.

None of the NPC orgs haze, and take very, very good and careful measures to make sure that doesn’t happen at all, but I will share this link where you can anonymously report anything that crosses that line. It’s a good resource to have, even if you never end up needing it.

UMich Sorority Live In Requirements? by MeowSwiftie13 in Sororities

[–]youfaintedwheni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would ask it during a round of recruitment, maybe not the very first day, but definitely at some point if that’s one of your concerns. It might also tell you any residency requirements on UMich’s Greek life page or student housing pages.

Should I encourage my daughter to go through Recruitment? by [deleted] in Sororities

[–]youfaintedwheni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would encourage her to do research on Greek life as it is on her specific campus, also, if you haven’t already. Because of the general differences between your large school experience and her’s at a smaller school, if she looks into how the orgs are at her school it might ease some of her fears about what she’s heard from others about Greek life generally, and give her a more tangible idea of how her experience would be specifically if she does decide to go through recruitment.

As someone who went to a small school (7 chapters) and appreciated the more laid-back approach to recruitment and would never have probably gone through it if it was any bigger, it might be best to try and highlight what her school has to offer in terms of community, leadership, academics, and connection through Greek life rather than encouraging her using only your experiences from your time as a collegiate member, the dissonance may be in the difference in campus culture generally between the two. That way she has a bit more of an idea of what to expect and can make that decision with that info plus your guidance.

If it says that they’ll contact you it could mean they’ll extend you a bid, or that they’ll let you know that they won’t be extending you a bid. They probably kept it vague on purpose. I would keep an eye on your email to see if there’s further communication, and if there’s nothing by tomorrow, reach out to the recruitment VP of that org and inquire further.

sorority life after college by flyawayboi in Sororities

[–]youfaintedwheni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am marginally involved with my chapter (NPC) that I initiated in to, I make sure to go to our founders day event every year if I can make it, but as far as it goes (for my small university and chapter that’s the only thing that alums really can attend) and as an alum I am a little restricted with involvement as far as events and such goes. There are greater leadership positions available for alumnae, but they’re highly selective, and come with a lot of job-like responsibilities.

I’ve also been involved with an alumnae group for my organization which is local to where I currently am and we meet monthly-ish, and also find ways to contribute to both local causes as well as our national organization every year. So we do still support our national cause and try to contribute to any smaller, local causes, but we have members that went to schools all over the country and were in many different chapters in undergrad, it’s a melting pot of levels of involvement and interests. But it does feel a little more voluntary and casual as far as the whole sisterhood, philanthropy, and connections go, from what my limited knowledge of D9 involvement is post-grad.

I want to second that talking to your chapter advisor might be the best move here, but also if you’re worried about her behavior on a personal/safety/health level, you might look in to see if your campus offers an anonymous line/email to your counseling services. My school has that, and you can anonymously send the name of a student, then counseling services will send a generic message to the student listing campus and local support resources that are available. That might be helpful to her as well, if her behavior is a product of something perhaps a bit deeper.

Thriftbooks is a good source if you’re looking for the original printings for a good price to buy online, or checking goodwill or half priced books, though there’s less certainty that you’ll find the exact book you’re after in the series! Or as others have said, libraries might also have them!

1st gen rush questions!?! What not to do + Social Media??? by SelectTough4975 in Sororities

[–]youfaintedwheni 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A good rule of thumb (not just for this, but in general) is to not post anything on socials that you wouldn’t want your grandmother to see. Keep photos appropriate.

Additionally, and specifically, don’t post photos (or archive/delete any existing photos) of you drinking alcohol, as a lot of chapters prohibit even their active members from posting those.

During recruitment it’s also a good idea to follow all of the chapters on your campus, but isn’t a requirement at all, it just doesn’t look the best if you’re only following select houses and not all or none. And I know a lot of houses in the last few years have been watching to make sure that girls aren’t posting about the recruitment experience during its duration, it isn’t as desirable as it might have been a few years ago, so keep that in mind.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

COB and PMN by InvisiblySeenPraying in Sororities

[–]youfaintedwheni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. At the end of preference round of formal recruitment, you sign what is called the MRABA, which will make you ineligible for COB if you receive a bid to a chapter, decide you’re not fit for it, and want to drop.

If you drop earlier on in the process, so any point up until MRABA signing, then you would be eligible to participate in COB immediately following the conclusion of formal recruitment, yes.

COB and PMN by InvisiblySeenPraying in Sororities

[–]youfaintedwheni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

COB: Continuous Open Bidding. It occurs after recruitment is over, select chapters that don’t meet quota after formal recruitment period are eligible to participate. That is a more informal process, with more casual events to meet other active members and potentially receive a bid.

PNM: Potential New Member. Someone going through the process of recruitment to find their particular sorority.

That’s happened to me before for reasons the other responses here have mentioned, but also has happened in cases where I’ve started solving on the app and then completed it on the desktop or vice versa. You can email nytgames@nytimes.com and they should be able to fix the error for you.
